Introducing 'Life with PlayStation'
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:45 PM on June 26, 2008
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai announced "Life with PlayStation" for the PS3. During the presentation, the "Life" was demoed for the audience for the first time — the service shows the Earth, and users can access current news and weather for locations around the world. It's possible to even pull up the full article from the headline. Users can also set background music while looking at the Earth, checking the weather and the world news. Click through pics below to see it in action.

Ooooooh, daddy like. When's this out?
And everyone needs to stop crying how they're copying the Wii. So what? It's not the first time something has been copied by a company. Besides, I don't own a Wii, so this actually benefits me. Can someone drain this thread, because I'm drowning in commenters' tears.

@DelSource: No Nintendo didn't invent it, but they were the first to put it in a video game console. You have to admit the whole thing reaks of "me too". Sony and MS seem to be trying to make all in one boxes with a million features, but leave out stuff that normal average non-ubertechy joe consumer would probably want in an all-in-one box. Nintendo got some of that in their box and it just seems like someone at Sony's Playstation deptartement saw that and ran with it.

This sounds a bit odd, I know to play the PS3 we have to stay inside but it's not like we're all out of it and need the PS3 to tell us what the hells going on in the outside world. I'd like to know where they get there news from too cos there isn't exactly a Sony news crew going around and asking the president and prime minister etc. all the questions people want to know.
Unless you can't be bothered to flick on the news channels or check a news website then I doubt this is necessary. If you didnt't do those things anyway I'd imagine it's because you don't care.

So will Sony start claiming they invented this in home consoles a few years down the road like they tried to claim they were the ones who brought analog joysticks, rumble in controllers, and real-time 3D graphics from a CD to the console market at E3 a couple of years ago(trying to steal credit from Nintendo and Sega in one fell swoop).

Why is everyone complaining about an extra feature. If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple as that. Sure, you can already do this stuff on a computer, but for people who have an always on PS3, this may be faster, especially if turning the TV on is something you do every morning but you don't always get on your computer.

Cool but just like the similar feature of the Wii it's useless.
It's far more faster to access news and weather through PC/Macbook than it is with a gaming console.
Oh and leave it to Sony to get their innovative ideas from competitors.

I love the way Wii uses the glob for weather/news and seeing your friends in Mario Kart, it's a great interface. I'm sure Sony's version will be more robust, and get updated more often, but I doubt it will have the charm of Wii's channels. Either way, can't get enough planet Earth, she's beautiful, between Wii, Life, Earthdesk on my Mac, and the PS3 music visualizer there's gonna be a whole lotta Earth gracing my LCD screens.
Hopefully this will spur Nintendo to update the Forecast channel so that is actually tells the current weather and not the weather 6 hrs. ago.

@rdj: Maybe it wasn't the Wii's strongest feature but my point still stands. Some people get upset when a feature from one console shows up on another. The point of innovation is to bring about new ideas and if those new ideas are successful they should be recognized and implemented elsewhere when appropriate.

Who cares if someone else did it first? I want all 3 console manufacturers to recognize the strengths of their competitors and match the features that have proven successful. It happens in every industry and it would be ridiculous to expect Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo to not include a feature because a competitor beat them to the punch. Sony is responsible for plenty of their own innovations and have earned the right to implement some of their competitors ideas. Same goes for Nintendo and Microsoft.

If this were a custom Google Earth client PLUS Folding's PS3 location function linked to your Friends list (so you can see where they are) AND geo-located news stories and Flickr pictures, it would be awesome!
...but it'll just be a few web pages launched from a spinny limited-zoom globe (much like the Folding and Visualiser ones) and that's a long way short of awesome.
And if the music 'mood' function is the same as Folding's, then it will only work for CDs you've ripped on the PS3, and not anything you import from a USB device.

This is really cool, cant wait for it.
Booting up my laptop to read the news (and then shutting it down) takes more time than turning on my PS3 and TV to read the news with this.
And for those bashing Sony for copying Nintendo, Since when did Nintendo invent distributing News and Weather via a special channel on a console? Last time I looked cable boxes are video consoles and they have news and weather channels.
Sony may not be as innovative as others in software, but they are undisputed in hardware innovation, they brought parallel processing to game consoles, and (though not very popular) were the first console to use a camera as a control (which is a lot more innovative than a Wii mote)

You guys say the Wii did it first but you do know that weather programs have been around since the 80's Also the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are also trying to be more than just a gaming console. They allow streaming of your media from your network, They are trying to be an entertainment hub, Also PVR's have had weather apps since they were released. I don't see this as a big deal but to claim it has been copied is a little off in my opinion.
The more features the better and i Know my wife will love since she is always watchng the weather channel. This would be perfect for her. Now to get her to approve every him of my gaming budget ;)

Like everyone else said, it's from the Wii. That's cool with me; the news channel led me to sweep the dust off my Wii every few weeks for a while there. I really like using the globe view for headlines. So how about the positives?
Sony's MP3/folding globe is a beautiful model, and I'd like to see more uses like this for it, so cool. Maybe we can choose a different feed than AP on PS3. At least there's background music. My eyes will also thank me for reading text on an HDMI signal over composite (I have component, but my PS2 makes far better use of it.)
Since we're not in friend code land, it would also be cool if we could place a tack on the map for each account, then view people on our friends list on the globe. Even an overall anonymous PS3 map would be neat if they used the points of light from Folding.

@StrikerGold: You make it seem as if someone is FORCING you to use this feature (when it's out).
Does it hurt to have more then just games on the console? I don't know about you, but being able to store my videos, music, photos, and games on one console, with multiple accounts (for my sister, mom and dad, as well as myself), is a pretty true media hub, IMO (Oh yeah, and being a BD player for my families collection). Now throw in the addition of Movie/TV show rentals and purchases, Folding@Home, and [now] worldwide news and weather brought to you in an elegant Google Earth style, is pretty damn kickass.
Call me a fanboy, but I can't see how in the world people could complain or 'bitch' about the addition of this feature.
And I didn't even mention the PlayStation Network! Even though I only know 5 people in real life (personally) that own a PS3.
I don't know, someone help me clear out why people are being so negative with everything lately.

This Looks good! They already had that Visualisation thing where the Earth goes round and round (always wonder if it has any relation to music being played)
Hope it loads fast enough, the Wii Channels take quite some time!

I think this is a really good sign for Sony actually. They've previously announced plans to take the best bits of Microsoft's online service, and now they're also taking one of Nintendo's gimmicks.
Why would anyone (uh unless you work for MS/Nintendo) have a problem with that?
The fact that Sony are willing to look at what their competition are doing and, where it works, blatantly copy it, is a really good thing for Sony's customers.

I hope MS take this idea too, the wii hasinteresting stuff - news & weather channels, but they're so poorly done.
It's not something i'd buy a ps3 for but i'd certainly look into it if i had one, however i fear it'd be pacific centric, especially since SCEE suck so bad.
The way that consoles are going i could see this sort of google earth/weather/news/gamertag/scoreboards/rankings/ownership/sales/completion%/etc thing become quite cool

All they need is a version of Wii Fit...Fit with Playstation?...anyway I wouldn't need a Wii at all!

This is a great idea, it looks good and I'd use it. Why aren't Microsoft doing this? It's letting Sony position themselves as a living room multimedia hub, and will surely dent Microsoft's Media PC and Xbox 360 strategies.

@optimusprime: You do know Sony had dozens of divisions and people behind every project, right? Don't be so foolish to think that if this project didn't exist, we would have suddenly gotten a new IP, or Mass Effect on PS3, etc.

@Mesren_Makai: Weather reports in a virtual world is not nearly as intriguing as browsing a virtual globe (like Google Earth) and seeing news and weather from across the world.
And if they did that... well I can see it now; play as a person watching the news and weather on tv - virtually.
Thats silly don't you think? Reminds me of the report The Onion did, 'World of World of Warcraft.' :P

How about some innovation?
I mean.... they COULD stick with the elements of Life but...BUUUT...
Couldn't they have used them in "Home"? Have your avatar watch the TV or something? That's unique, I'd say.
Instead of making two separate channels....Sony just...mushed them together. That's...that's...cool I guess.....

Everyone is looking at this like everyone who bought one uses it for purely playing games. While it is true mine is rarely used for anything else, I convinced my dad to buy one for himself. I set it up so that it has access to his entire library of DVD's/music on a large hardrive connected to his computer.
When he has guests over or a party, he turns the thing on and plays a music playlist with the Earth visualization playing on the TV. This seems like the same thing but with more buttons to play with, which should entertain him and guests.

@Mr. Fap☆Fap!: Yeah, I made it up.....but what is this?
Prototype Sega Dreamcast motion sensing controller from nearly ten years ago: [homepage.ntlworld.com] - this look at all familiar to you?
And who came up with the motion controller technology concept for the Wii? [www.bridgedesign.com] Apparently it looked very different from what we have now, but clearly Nintendo liked Sega's design and just copied it.
Plus, the YouTube video - which for the life of me I cannot find - of that be-shorted American guy playing boxing with two motion senser hand controllers.....in about 1999.

But someone had to have built this feature, and whether it is engineering time or resources, it is money wasted on a feature that in my opinion should be spent on games. Don't take me wrong, I love having extra features on my black shiny box, but I would be 10 times more excited if instead it was an announcement for an exclusive AAA game, or securing a third party exclusive.
