Leipzig Not Moving, We Are Very Confused
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:00 PM on June 27, 2008
We. Are. Confused. 2008 was supposed to be the last year the Games Convention was held in Leipzig. Starting next year, we were meant to get a bigger, badder European show in the more travel-friendly city of Cologne. We were happy with this news, we'd accepted it, were reading up on Cologne seeing who does the best fry-up breakfast. But now the organisers of Leipzig have announced that they'll be staying on, and will be holding another Games Convention in 2009. Which, if we're not mistaken, will give us two tradeshows in Germany next year. And we all know that, in the interests of good business, there can (and shold) be only one.

Every major publisher has their dependance around the Rhein/Main Area - for those non-germans: around Cologne.
So guess twice which event will dominate in the future.
Leipzig was nice but the GC rose in favors of importance quicker than the infrastructure of Leipzig could provide.

Bard is right.
The Games Convention did not move. The Publisher Association with most major publishers just removed its support in favor of a new convention in Cologne.
Leipzig was shocked by this and everybody thought they would cancel any future games conventions. However the Leipzig Convention Company did not and now they try to run it without major label support. We will see how this works out.
The Major concern about the Leipzig Convention was its lack of accommodation for future expansion of the trade show. greater Cologne Area is far more suitable for this

@Luke Plunkett:
Was the Leipzig convention the one where it was literally held in the middle of freaking nowhere? Or was that the game convention held in Australia? (I think I remember you saying something about it sucking,which makes me think the nowhere one was in Australia)...

You guys should have read the press releases ...
The "Games Convention" is a brand owned by the Leipzig Tradeshow. It had the official backing of the game industry.
But the game industry wanted to change the location to Cologne. The brand is owned by Leipzig, though... so they created a new show in Cologne named "GamesCom", again with the official backing, which will take place in 2009.
Leipzig still owns the brand "Games Convention", though... so now they said they will STILL organize a Games Convention in 2009, but without the official backing.

@EA errrm... KE:
That's news to me, as there's only EA & UBI (Atari being non-major for certain after paying their lawyer for that letter to 4players) around Cologne... the others are Munich or .... everywhere from Hamburg to Lake Constance.
@Plunkett:
I say you go to Leipzig, so you don't need to remember a new name and location. Everything nice and fuzzy like last time but minus the great games.
Case closed.

We KNOW Leipzig and Games Con are different entities. Fact is, everyone presumed that Leipzig was winding up this year, and the mantle of "big German games show" was being passed to Cologne.

I'm gunna predict now that the sequel to having two conventions in Germany will be denied as ever existing, as well the sequel after that.

@sundawn: I can't agree on your comment. Leipzig has a nice infrastructure and is reachable easily through various traffic systems.
I doubt that Leipzig has great success in the future and Köln will make it...very said though. Neverless I'll go to Leipzig again this year.

The Leipzig trade fair organization holds the rights to the name GC - Games Convention. So they are simply underlining that the fair in cologne is a whole different event. The name stays in Leipzig, which does NOT mean there is going to be a second fair. Cologne just didnt want to pay for the name "GC". One could argue that the statement "The GC stays in Leipzig" by the Leipzig trade fair org was bound to create confusion... or in other words that Leipzig is just pissed because they lost the trade fair to Cologne.
