Leonardo DiCaprio to Star in Atari Movie?
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on June 8, 2008
OK, OK, kinda misleading headline -- his production company is producing "Atari" a biopic about Nolan Bushnell, Pong's developer and Atari's founder. Paramount bought the rights yesterday. Indications are that he will star, but not knowing the story yet, I don't know if that means he would play Bushnell or, perhaps, another character through whom the story of Bushnell and Atari is presented.
The Hollywood Reporter describes "Atari" as drawing on themes of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and "Tucker: The Man and His Dream." I was hoping it'd be a movie adaptation of "Space War" -- just two ships drifting to the centre of the screen, shooting each other. Maybe a love interest. Somewhere. Maybe not.
Wherever the story ends up, it sounds like it's getting very serious treatment, and the outlook sounds favourable for a well made biography. Plus I love period pieces, even if I've lived in the period described.

Sounds pretty interesting, though I don't know how they'll deal with Nolan's life seriously while sating the audience's desire to see him freeze to death in the mid Atlantic Ocean.
To be honest, I expect all films Di Caprio is in to end that way, despite thinking he was excellent in The Departed.

@Ferrik: Don't worry, it's a fake ending that's being spread around. What really happens is Nolan turns into Mecha-Nolan and fights Mecha-Ralph in a battle that rivals Ragnarok itself. And it all happens while the Family Matters theme song plays in the background.

Just read about this on Variety and Ain't It Cool News.
Could be interesting and satirical if done right. I wonder who gets to play the lovable ol' bitter Nolan? If it's Leo will it end with him laughing mechanically in a hot tub full of cash sipping on 80's wine coolers in a plastic wine glass made of recycled defunct E.T. cartridges?

This is a repost of my comment from the same subject article on Gizmodo...
I wonder if they'll show the part of him stealing then unnamed Pong from Ralph Bear, a move that gave his console much needed credibility in the first place.
I won't be seeing it because he's never admitted that what he did was low. He's the scummy guy that rides the wave of fame and never gives credit to the people he's stepped on along the way... Oh crap, I didn't mean to ruin the movie.

We already have "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and one day we will get "Nintendo". "Sony" would be a really boring film so I don't that'll be getting made.

I bet that the ending will be a dissapointed and confused Nolan that despises modern videogames, and how barbaricly violent they have become.
A movie to peddle the cause of movies, of course.

Even as a video game enthusiast I don't give two shits about Nolan. He's not some lovable public character and Atari wasn't some magical dream machine that made the world fall in love with gaming.

@Quilt: I actually saw one in that same style a couple of weeks ago on a vintage clothes store.
On topic; that movie sounds interesting, I loved the way "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" told the story about a man trying to break into the automotive industry, a vision of the gaming industry in a similar way sounds good to me. Oh an please let there be lots of scenes of Chuck E. Cheese's and the burrial of ET carts. =)

He was awesome in The Aviator, which was a period piece and film about a person tied to history. So I have high hopes this will achieve something just as good.

@Gam3r: Agreed, if he can do Aviator, he can do this. And this is a subject matter closer to heart than aeroplanes and films about aeroplanes.

@Gam3r:
No he wasn't. He was awesome in Gilbert Grape, but only for the simple fact that you got to see Johnny Depp lay down some pimp-slap on him. Other than that, he can't act his way out of a torn up wet paper bag with a map, a flashlight, a compass, and a string with a note on it telling him to follow it if he wants to get out.

Agreed. He's really become a great actor over the last few years. Although I'd say he's shown greatness in the past too with roles in Basketball diaries. He's still young and he's bound to get better at his craft.

DiCaprio is douchebaggy enough to pull off Nolan Bushnell.
I really want to see a movie about Shigeru Miyamoto starting at Nintendo or some of the more recent history of Atari post-Bushnell.

@GuyinGA:It's very unlikely you'll see a movie about Shigeru ever made, because he's pushed from the time that DK hit it big to be as humble and normal as anyone when he by all rights could be giving in a 10 million dollar home and have a fleet of cars.
I wouldn't count on it happening till he's dead and even then not for a few years.

Some of you nerds are such haters.
DiCaprio is one of our greatest actors of our generation. He can play almost any role. If he does star in this I have high expectations. As someone above pointed out, Aviator was very good. And I'd like to see this.
Someone above also said "This sounds too serious to be good" :( Thats the type of thinking that will keep gaming as a secondary role in entertainment. We need more people looking at gaming in serious light.
