Limited Premium DS Lites For Japan
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on June 24, 2008
Chalk up yet another reason to hate Japan's Club Nintendo. From July 1st to August 31st, a limited number of "Premium" DS Lites will be made available to lucky folks. How limited? There are only 3,000 of these outside cover plated "Premium" DS Lites, Here's the breakdown: 1,000 Premium Silver; 1,000 Premium Black; 1,000 Premium Rose. As website Gpara explains, these are actually the standard-in-Japan "Gloss Silver", "Jet Black" and "Metallic Rose" DS Lites treated with a special metallic plating cover. Club Nintendo members interested in snagging one of these need to enter the serial numbers of two purchased DS titles that went on sale after August 2006 into the Club Nintendo online application. There's a limit of five entries per member! From that, 3,000 winners will be selected at random. Click through the gallery to get a look at the "Premium" DS Lites.

It's just the top that's shiny. The internal still looks fugly.

@MrBionic: Maybe not, but I bet if there was a contest to win a free, limited edition, "platinum" (or something equal to it) version of whichever console/handheld you enjoy the most, you'd be interested.
There's no REAL necessity for Nintendo to do this, but for the fans of the hardware you have to admit that it's a pretty nice gesture.

What is premium about them? The renders make it hard to tell the difference-- Maybe the top lid is shinier? Because I'm pretty sure all of those colors are standard in japan. I have one of those silver ones which I bought in Tokyo.

@MrBionic, BPMλ, & ItsSuperEffective: But they're shinier... is that not enough for people anymore?

I have no idea what makes these "premium" aside from being shiny, but I have to admit I'd enter. My current onyx DS Lite? The hinge broke (!), and the R button stopped working (!!). I'd replace it, but it's hard to sell me on another $130 system when truly good games for it come out so rarely.

So, the prefix "Premium" makes these DSes special? Or is there more to it? >_>

I personally believe that those of us who are crazy enough to import a ton of Japanese NDS games / Wii Games, etc. should be eligible for these Club Nintendo promotions =P I have quite a few Club Nintendo cards that came with my games. If only I could use them :( You break my heart over and over Nintendo. Give a Goomba a break!

People, people..this is the DS were talking about.
They could sell it in a bag of wet dog shit & it would still top the charts in japan.

I'm not entirely sure what's supposed to be premium about them... the colors? Meh.
This ridiculous trend of offering the SAME OLD THING in different colors and making it out to be some special thing is getting on my nerves.

@phinehas:
Yeah, blow into the crack between the system shell and the button. Blow hard, too. It should clean up the contact point... for a while at least. If it stops working again, just blow again.
If blowing doesn't work, something is really broken, and you'll have to ship to Nintendo. :X

I still wake up crying about it.

@BPMλ: When you say INTO the shoulder button, do you mean lift the shoulder button up and blow into the space underneath? Both of mine are acting funky, but blowing didn't really help that much.

@Xenigma:
Sucks about your hinge. Happened to me, too. :/
Though, likely, your shoulder button stopped working because the contact point is dirty. Happened to my L button. So here's what you do: blow into the shoulder button. Seriously, this works most of the time.

@phinehas: um.. not really. If one was sent to me out of the blue, I wouldn't turn it down... but I generally don't enter contests to begin with, especially if it means winning something I already own.

Did all of you really miss reading that? That's what makes it premium. Disappointingly, only the top outside half of the DS features the metallic coating, which would probably look a bit tacky. Can't say a chrome DS doesn't look sexy though (although it would cease sexiness as soon as human hands touched it.)

@JustThisGuy:
Haha, yeah, it is like the old days of the NES. Though, that was only a problem with the first NES and its cheap pin connectors... The NES MkII was much more reliable.
As for what's causing the DS Lite problems... [shrugs]
One thing's for certain: DS Lite isn't made out of Nintendium (that indestructable plastic they've used for just about every system and accessory).

@BPMλ: Wait, are you shitting me? Have we come full circle, where we once again must blow into a Nintendo system to get it to work properly?
There is, I think, a very poignant message about the circularity of time and history buried deep within this little nugget.

Nintendo has done this before with the original DS. The "Hot Summer" series of DS handhelds were done just like this and they are very valuable. To date, I have only seen two of them on Ebay "Hot Summer Peach" and "Hot Summer Yoshi". I only wish I had the money. :(

Thanks Club Nintendo for once again screwing America out of sweet DS stuff. Remember the special DS game and watch cart? DAMNIT! You guys haven't had a single good giveaway since I picked up a subscription and got the Legend of Zelda GC disks! And as long as I'm Ranting, GIVE US THE MOTHER GAMES!
@Xenigma:
@BPMλ:
Yeah there is a tiny crack in the outside of my DS's far right hinge on the screen's half. And my R1 button works then doesn't. I need to get all the dirt out of my DS's innards I guess.

There's a team of people translating Mother 3...
How shiny!
They don't look that much different from the original DS, but it would still be neat to win the contest.
I want Club Nintendo here!

Why doesn't the US get any of the cool new colors? Metallic rose is dark pink. Last time I checked, we already had pink. Most people can't tell them apart.

It's not consumer's fault for not spending their money on Nintendo's product, it's the stupid people who are running the Nintendo of American having trouble making wise decisions to give what people want.
