Lionhead Drops Clues On Fable 2 Characters, Villains
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 10:40 AM on June 20, 2008
One of Fable 2's villains will be "one of the most evil people in video game history," Lionhead creative director Dene Carter told IGN recently.
Eurogamer summed up some more of the recent hints thusly:
The first examples of the faces you'll come across in Fable 2 are Arfur, a murderous and vicious thief who sounds like the infamous Bill Sykes; Barnum, an unlucky inventor likely to be laughed off of Dragon's Den time and time again; and Giles, a tough-as-old-boots farmer who used to be a soldier and now has problems with a violent gang.
Nobody's saying just how many characters there will be in the world, but Carter said some 50 hours of voice acting has been recorded. And though Lionhead is aiming for an open-ended world, you won't be able to kill anyone where doing so will remove huge chunks of the story - wouldn't want to waste all that hard work, right?

I know this will be a great game, but please try to lay off the hyperbole this time. Saying statements like "one of the most evil people in video game history" is not a good road to go down. Everyone knows it'll be decent at worst, so just give us the facts!

Meh, if they want to let you have complete control over the universe then why not let you kill important characters... but when you do have a message pop up that states how important they were. Then to make things better, they could give you an optional quest to revive said important character?

Oh gosh, that sounds awfully childish. Last time, I just watched my little sister play Fable, and I'm pretty sure that's where I'm headed now too..

How Evil? Javier Bardem in "No Country for Old Men" evil? If Lionhead Studios can pull that off, then I'll put some serious thought into borrowing my friend's 360.
I loved that guy!

Arfur! I fart in your general direction! Repeatedly! As I giggle and call my girlfriend in and say "Look Boobie, I can make my character FART!"

@kaish: "This is gonna be awesome no more reading long ass texts but games now always have voice acting."
It's not so great when the voice acting is BAD. I'm not saying this will be, I have some faith in Lionhead, but there's been more than one game where I turned off the voices and turned on the subtitles because reading was a much better experience.
In Theif: Deadly Shadows I muted the sound altogether before going into a store as the fake cockney accents were so horrible. Otherwise I thought it was a pretty decent Thief game, but the voice acting would jerk me out of the world completely.

I loved Populous! But like, I'm so not going to succumb to the hypemachines again like I did for the first Fable. Most evilest character in the history of video games? Kay.

Gotta give Lionhead credit; they know when and how to let tidbits of info out to keep people interested, or pissed off because fall is so far away, whichever comes first.

@LittleBigPlaneteer:
I should clarify, that it was done intentionally because of Molyneux's past work.

Hope there's a Leprechaun so I can hear his 20 mins of him telling me I will never find his Lucky Charms or him telling me I have to go on a quest to find them.
This is gonna be awesome no more reading long ass texts but games now always have voice acting.

You fail actually. The name populous was created by Peter Molyneux. Try doing some researching by calling out IGN for no reason.

Oh IGN.
Populous: densely populated; with many people
Populace: group of people forming the total population of a certain place.

"...you won't be able to kill anyone where doing so will remove huge chunks of the story..."
Why?
If you're aiming for a huge, open-ended world, then make it all available, make it all included. Look at Fallout 1 and 2; you could do pretty much anything, and it still worked beautifully. I see no reason this couldn't happen again, except that the developers are skittish. They don't want to move too far from their tried-and-true action RPG formula.
Maybe Fable 2 is the wrong place for an experiment, but I see no reason such an experiment wouldn't work.
I'd certainly buy it.

@Crabfeast:
I agree, just like Morrowind did.
When you killed an important character you had a message stating how important they were.
Why can't Lionhead do the same? Oh i know, cause the villain is your younger brother and it will be easy for you to kill him, wile he was sleeping.
(I hope not)

I continue to remain ambivalent about Fable 2, simply because the first one turned out to be so much less than what it was talked up to be while it was in development. Am I the only one who remembers Molyneux describing how incredibly open ended the gameplay would be in Fable, saying you could use literally anything as a weapon, do virtually anything you wanted, etc? Then, closer to release, he admitted that they were basically unable to do anything remotely like that due to 'technical restraints.' As a fairly standard RPG title, the game had its charms, but it wasn't the revolutionary game they claimed for ages they were developing.

hmm most evil in game history....... I think genocide has been committed in some form in games before so i don't think the most evil is possible.

Wha? Fable 2? sorry, I lost interest in that when M kept talking about that STUPID DOG. He said he took out the MINI-MAP so you will HAVE TO USE THE DOG! thats right, NO MINI MAP, just hope your anoy.er...pet knows where its going. I will wait and see what he focuses on at this years E3.
Oh, side question. Whatever happened to that other game in development. Dimitri?

When it comes to Fable 2's voice acting, there are only two things I'm concerned with...
Number 1: More than just a couple of voice actors need to be used. A lack of variety can seriously hinder the experience of a game that has hours upon hours of great voice acting (I'm looking at you, Oblivion!).
Number 2: Under no circumstances should they record anyone saying, "Chicken Chaser."

Why not have main characters that can die?
It would seriously limit the story that the game developer can write if you could just kill anyone. Each person dead means an alternative version of the events have to be written.
I suppose that story would not matter in a game like Fable, but it is important for many games.

I cant believe you all seriously want to be able to kill all characters,if you truly think that's a viable option go give gothic 3 a try,i cant even tell you how many times i've had to redo hours of gameplay because i killed a plotline member too early.

The interviewer wasn't paying all that much attention, apparently.
"
IGN: How closely will we interact with these characters? Oftentimes in RPGs we see NPCs as nothing more than points for a single interaction or a place to find a quest. Will Fable 2 be different? If so, how?
Dene Carter: Even though Barnum, Arfur and Giles are not core NPCs, in that their actions don't alter the overall 'big' fate of the world, we consider folk like them to have a really important function as morality signposts."
IGN: Will dealing with Arfur, Barnum or Giles change the Fable 2 world drastically depending on your decisions? What sorts of changes to the game can we expect from a single character interaction?
/End of Quote.
Good read.
IGN: You say Arfur is a "seedy" character. If I plant an Arfur, will it grow into an Arfur tree?
Carter: What's that? An acorn joke? To a "Fable" developer? You really are evil!
^Found that to be amusing..
I don't expect much from Fable 2, but I'll buy it anyways. I'd say if nothing else it will be another decent game.
