Metal Gear Online Stand Alone Confirm, Access Numbers Announced
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on June 30, 2008
Over the weekend, MGS4 creator Hideo Kojima did a world-wind autographing tour of Japan. After hitting America and Europe, we've covered this plenty! New bits: At the Yokohama Yodobashi Camera event, Kojima talked up Metal Gear Online, saying:
Domestically, the one-day peak time is 11pm with 12,000 players playing online simultaneously. Worldwide, we've seen about 100,000 connect [to MGO].Famitsu confirmed the standalone version of Metal Gear Online, which goes on sale for ¥1,800 (US$AU 17.67) on July 17th.

MGO does not deserve a standalone version, it's terrible.

@TheIrishNinja: Yeah, they need to be online. That just sucks, you should have seen my trying to add my friend today...
I figure though, that in time, konami will get it right.

@NfoRcErX: Thanks dude, you saved me... well I guess you proved me wrong... I honestly don't enjoy the MGS series (never finished the 3rd and the recent 4th). Maybe MGO is something different, I should try it out.

Personally i really REALLY like MGO. Its such a great alternative to every other online game out there and getting someone with CQC is fucking great.

@Friction: I personally have only played 30 minutes of MGS4 but have tons of hours logged in MGO. I have never liked the MGS series except for MGO and the VR Missions from PSX days. I would have much rather been able to buy MGO for 17 bucks then to pay 60 for MGO + some other random game that doesn't hold my interest...

@IntelSilver: Yeah. I'm tired of having to use a Konami account. Also, the one character limit is a load of bull.

Separate MGO? Are you saying there are people out there that want MGO but dont want to play MGS4? I was under the impression that the single player was the real reason people wanted to even take a plunge in to MGO... Logic... cannot compute... overload... *putt*

I like MGO just because it's fun for me. I get bored of standard run-n-gun type of shooters, and this has CQC, so I can throw someone face first into a claymore if I so choose :P
I don't think it's worth a stand-alone though, much better with MGS4 SP to play.

Oh wait, it Japan. That explains it :D

mgo isn't all that great. unlike the cod system, the ranking isn't rewarding. its basically a gun battle with very little players attempting to cqc. if that's what you're into, then maybe you'd appreciate it a lot more then i do. i just feel that it could of been different.

Why make a stand alone? If people want to play it, they can buy MGS4...MGO is on the same disc...this is really stupid imo, no need for a standalone since its on MGS4's disc.

Even if those numbers are good, the gameplay isn't enough to warrant a stand alone

@IntelSilver: seriously. im ok with the sign-in system now that its automatic for me, but the buddy add sucks - do they have to be online or wha?
and yeah, to sell me here, im gonna need more than "it has lots moar maps". And i adore this franchise, too.

I went to the event at Osaka yesterday and got my poster and game signed by Kojima, Shinkawa, and Kikuchi!!!
By the way, I didn't see you there Brian ;)
That was very cool, but they must be very tired... Apparently they will go to Taiwan next for the sign tour.
Anyway I will try MGO soon now!

@YourAnthony: It's really good, but they need to add some stuff to "warrent a stand alone".
Things like using our PSN accounts dammit.

is it even that good to warrent a stand alone? I herd it was not great...
Single player sounds so good.

@Friction: I'd definitely say that it's worth renting MGS4 at the very least to try out MGO. I enjoyed the beta, which is why I went ahead and picked up MGS4, thinking maybe I'd enjoy it as well as MGO... too bad I was wrong about that :-P. I tried MGS for PSX but let my friend play instead... I played the VR Missions, then played the standalone VR Missions Expansion and thoroughly enjoyed those experiences for what they were. After that I tried to get into MGS2, but couldn't, so I didn't even try 3 or Portable ops...
Although MGO is quite a pain in the butt to register (you need a konami ID and GameID as well as your normal PSN name signed in to the PSN to play), once you do, it's pretty simple and works out very nicely. I have experienced some problems with bad lag, especially noticeable with Close Quarters Combat (for example, someone grabbing you from 15 feet away happens WAY to often), but overall it is a pretty good game and hopefully will only get better!

1/30 of total owners simultaenously online is pretty impressive, especially since it's not the main game and involves having to go through that sign up process.

MGO is such a fun, robust online game trapped in a tedious and sometimes head scratching frame work ( I have to pay to have two characters? What the hell?)
Here are a few features that would make me buy a stand alone MGO:
1.) Get rid of the Konami ID's
2.) Include a high definition video of the man who invented Konami ID's getting kicked in the junk.
3.) Do away with senseless micro transations.
4.)ummm... more boobs?

MGO needs to allow us to change our character appearance FOR FREE. For those of you who don't know, MGO only allows One character per CONSOLE. So that means that if you have a sibling or anyone else who shares the console, they have to pony up $7 to register a character slot to play the game. Once you make your character (clothes) you can't change them. This is how the game is CURRENTLY, but I think these issues will be addressed when the stand alone game is released.

@Thorax: I've heard different things about the characters. Is it one character per account, or one character per system?
If it's one character per system then Konami should go shoot themselves right now.

The signup procedure for MGO is so hideously convoluted that I wouldn't be surprised if half of prospective players turn around and run away.
Even if for some unfathomable reason they wished for users to register with Konami, there must have been far simpler ways to integrate with PSN than the way they did. Why for example do users need two further IDs?

I loved playing the Beta, but the fact that I have to download the horrendous patch again to start playing it , made me not play try it even once after purchasing MGS4

Better use PSN accounts rather than the stupid konami id and game id system, haven't even played MGO because of that.

Up to 12,000 at once? That kind of pales in comparison to the 1,200,000 people I saw online in Halo 3 a few weeks after launch.

Amazing game, until everyone found out about automatic snipers.
Now I spend 10 minutes searching for a server without them. Why have a gun more powerful than any sniper or automatic rifle?! Madness!

If I could figure out the gameplay more in MGO I'd probably like it more but half the time I am sitting there dead scratching my head on how someone can get 3 headshots in a row with a P90 in none close quarter situations(while if I empty a clip of ak47 rounds in someone be it their back or head they should be dead after 15-20 shots) and CQC is more frustrating than helpful(be it lag or my lack of playing ability).

@Strangelove: Well yeah, it's not the third game in a popular franchise known mostly for it's online play. It's an addition to a fourth game in a popular franchise known for it's single player game. It's not rocket science.

@Amazon_Chris:
It's one character per system initially. You can buy another character slot for $6.99... if you think it's worth it.
I think MGO isn't too bad of an online game, but it needs a few fixes. The first would be to give more than one character slot initially. In the game, it's a bit too easy to get headshots by spraying your assault rifle in the general direction of the other guy's head, while it takes way too many body shots to kill them otherwise. Shotguns are a bit weak, though KP might have done that because of how overpowered they were in the last version. Oh, and they should have extended the weapon customization system across your whole account rather than just implementing it within a single game.
On the other hand, the skill system is cool, so long as you're battling with people close to your level - otherwise you'll get wrecked (the automatching takes care of that, though). The SOP system is cool, so long as you take the time to link up with your teammates. I think the game is best when you're playing a gametype with a goal, rather than just a deathmatch; Base missions are my favorite, though Capture missions are cool, too.

@SilentAssassn87: Wow. That's incredibly dumb on Konami's part. The smart thing to do would be to offer at least one character per account. The genius thing to do would've been to have said this:
**** it. Let's use PSN.

I personally really like MGO, you have to think a lot more tactically than most multi-player shooters. Plus being Snake in the sneaking missions is a blast.

It's OK. I doubt updates will improve it very much. It's really NOT like Metal Gear, at all, so I guess that can be good or bad (bad to me).
It makes sense to do this in Japan since they aren't really into shooters, and MGO is like a baby shooter, since headshots are easy as hell and it's SUPPOSED to be team oriented (it's not, haha).
