Metal Gear Solid 4 Ships Out 3 Million
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 5:40 AM on June 27, 2008
During Sony's corporate strategy meeting, at which the company announced Life with PlayStation and showed off its video download service for the first time, PlayStation bossman Kaz Hirai provided some new numbers. Most relevant to this post's interests are the shipment figures for Metal Gear Solid 4, which has been deployed to worldwide retailers three million times over. Not bad for a couple weeks work.
Yes, hairsplitters, that's shipped to retailers, not sold through to customers. Still, we're fairly certain Hideo Kojima can flaunt that number to friends and probably secure a line of credit at his favourite silk shirt retailer because they know he's good for it.

What i find is everones bigest problem with this game is that is on PS3, all of my friends that loved the series played all the other ones suddenly hate Metal Gear. Ofcourse these are the friends that don't own PS3's. Hmmmm
there just may be a corelation

@wild homes has particularly attractive fries today: i have faith in MGS4. i was on line at launch and almost half the people on the line hadnt even played the first 3. MGS4 is pushing the action to the forefront, which is well illustrated in television commercials. so if this ideology of making people understand that there is more than one way to skin a cat in MGS4... then it should be in god shape.

@OT79: You're right, and I wouldn't mean to assert Konami will lose any money on this, because they certainly won't (see right here for what I mean) but companies don't usually make a product just to break even-- that's usually the bare MINIMUM (to be guaranteed at worst a zero return on your investment) to consider greenlighting a project. Either way, I have to expect they really don't want to see the other territories' charts come in reading an 80+% sales decline week-over-week.

@zanzibarlegend: I don't know if I agree. I mean, I want that to be true, because Kojima's men are certainly very, very talented and I think MGS is really cool, but I don't expect to see this blow up later on down the line if it doesn't right now-- as many reviews have said, MGS4 is really going to appeal mostly to the established crowd-- and if Snake Eater didn't top 4,000,000 units on an install base of 100,000,000 consoles, I just don't see a lot of people picking up this game unless they've already invested in the series. But we'll see.
@Voteforme2020: You could certainly be right about that-- it would've been a really smart bet on Kojima's part to hedge the development costs. I don't think the game is going to lose money for Konami by any stretch of the imagination (3,000,000 x $60= $180,000,000 revenue right there, even though that's not net profit) but compared to something like GTAIV this isn't making the same kind of a money. Cheers!

why are people saying this is pathetic and low? GTA4 was across two systems and did twice the shipment and moved 6 mil just after its first week. This game ships 3 mil after its 2nd week of release and is selling well and it is only on one system. WTF do you people expect? It isn't a miracle title but deserves way more respect than what some are giving it. If Sony gets even close to the sales of the ps3 version of GTA4 then it is a win for Kojima and Sony. Sure people will argue it woulda done twice as well if it was on 360 as well but it isn't and won't/can't be so get over it and give respect where it is deserved.

@jfx316: It's good considering that the last one only did 4 million in all. Only to be out two weeks means that this will quite easily surpas MGS3 and perhaps over its lifetime pass the original. Lets not forget MGO is still to be released later this year, and it uses alot of the same resources as MGS. So their combined sales could be impressive indeed.
MGS is not a "kill everything that moves testicle-fest" so it doesn't have the bash you across the head appeal that Gears and Halo have, it never has. So for a stealth title that only appeals to a certain type of gamer, its pretty good, and Konami probably isn't too worried about recouping costs at this point. Remember a rep once said they had to sell a million day one to break even... so even if they needed to sell 2m to do that, they seem to be in money making mode at this point, and not having to worry about recouping cost.

@wild homes has particularly attractive fries today: Well,Konami says many times that they have to sold at least 1 million of copies to recover their investments,MGS4 is about 2 million according to some sites at this week (the second) from the release date,I expect to sell some kind of 4 to 5 millions of copies,a little more than MGS3,if this happens then Konami and Sony will be happy at all.

@eunoia: what is? the numbers? or your ass-clownish post?
@wild homes has particularly attractive fries today: i think the numbers will dip for a bit,realistically... but then expect them t go back up after sony lines up the other heavy hitters. for a game that is supposed to be a niche type of game it is selling well. so you know throughout the year and especially holidays, any future PS3 buyer with a pulse will def pick this game up. once the install base increases here with more support from more games, it will be only sensical to throw this game into your library

Hopefully it sells well enough to make up for its costs.

It's definitely a really large percentage of the install base, but if this game cost as much as the press speculates it did, Konami really have to be hoping the sales don't drop off in the rest of the world as they did in Japan. To drop about 84% in your second week really isn't going to make this the hit Sony must've been hoping for.

Even if it's only shipped copies, it's an excellent result.
Retailers wouldn't order the games if they didn't think they could sell them, so unless Konami is giving them away, I reckon 3 mil. is a pretty meaningful number.
That's between 1/4 and 1/5 of the installed userbase, when you think about it.

@bobeotm: I think that's a tough call, honestly. The same week MGS4 came out, Walmart had that deal where you could get a hundred dollar gift card just for buying a PS3 (or any Blu-Ray player, actually).
They happened to pick the one week when PS3 was already going to do gangbuster sales to pay consumers to buy it. Genius!
That said... I'm eager to see what the monthly sales numbers end up looking like!

For some reason, I don't expect "units of Metal Gear Solid shipped" to mean the same thing as "Wii units shipped."
However, once I sell some stuff on eBay, take a second look at the financials, it is my full intent to put one of those three million shipped units in my home.

@kumuasata: Well, a high percentage of the people who bought a 360 bought it at launch knowing Halo 3 was coming. Besides, the 360 has a very specific type of gamer as the majority of its base, so as long as you make a game for them, most of them are bound to buy it. Look at gears, and many other games of the genre.

One thing that should be considered about how well this game is doing is that this game shipped 3 million with the PS3 having only a 13m install base. Consider the fact that the last one sold only 4 million with an install base of over 80million.

@Hassun: True, but it was almost insane the number of adds in this game. I have to believe that this and the untold amount of money Sony paid them for "development costs" is the reason they could keep a huge exclusive to a console with the lowest install base.
I love the advertisement in the game though. I think Kojima uses this evil to best he possible can. He's intelligent enough to say "okay, I understand I need it, but how do we do it right?"
@kumuasata: A fast paced, FPS game with a larger install base is outselling a slower paced, stealth game with a smaller install base? A little context is all I'm asking for here. When adjusted, I think MGS is doing fine for a game with a "niche" audience.

Yea, but you should also consider that many people who bought the PS3 did it (also) because they knew MGS4 would come. Actually MGS4 and FFXIII. So of course many people who have a PS3 bought the game. Probably around half of them (if you consider just the ones that bought it specifically to play videogames, not to play blu-ray movies).
Anyway

Have you actually played MGS4? You bet your ass it's a kill everything that moves game, which after MGS3, I welcome whole-heartedly. Kojima realized that hours of codec converstations are not best mated by hours of hiding in the jungle with the dual-shock on the coffee table, waiting for the AI to fall asleep again.
Unfortunately, most (% time) of the experience "playing" MGS4 is with the controller sitting on the coffee table. So Kojima honed the interactive parts of the game (making them very un-MGS-like), and then went apeshit on the cinemas (which is MGS-in-spades).
I really don't know how to feel about MGS4. Reading these posts, I'm not sure half of the "fans" of the game have even played it.
