New Operation Darkness Screens, Now With More WWII Zombies And Werewolves
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 6:20 AM on June 18, 2008
Atlus' Operation Darkness, developed by Success, is due out in the U.S. on June 24th, but all of you desperately curious about the werewolf and zombie-infested World War II strategy RPG can tide yourselves over on these new screens in the meantime.
The art they've got on the official website is rather beautiful, if scary - like, weren't Nazis scary enough? Why zombie nazis?
That's right. Because it makes it seem awesome.

Awesome idea, graphics are just fine for a tactical RPG. Now what kills it? Camera perspective and Controls. Every move you make takes too long, not because your thinking of the right course of action but because you are fighting with the camera and finicky controls. One wrong tap of a button and there is no return or try again control.
Overall just such a great idea wasted. In a tactical RPG camera is especially important and can make or break a game for me. Every move was just so frustrating that I turned it off and really couldn't go back to it. Ahh well, heres to waiting on Valkyrie Chronicles and/or that other 360 SRPG that should be out soon.

Personally I loved the demo. The camera controls were so incredibly bad that I think they are the main reason why the battles take so long. But I dont think they break the game. I believe this game will be $40 and not $60 anyway.

@Gitaroo_Dude: I don't understand how this camera has made it through any point in development. Anyone who touches this game complains about the camera and rightfully so. How can a whole team of developers all agree that this god awful camera(fact) is...ok for a final build?
It's insanity.

I enjoyed the demo, but the graphics were not even good for a ps2 or xbox game. Without a great story, there is no way I could play through what I could imagine easily being 100+ hours of gameplay. Give me the same game with the typically good JRPG graphics I expected and I might be able to make it through, but it would still be tedious.

Any ide if it's coming out in Europe?
I played the demo and while I agree with the coments on crappy camera and graphics it's most definite buy for me.
I got throught he demo twice just to see all the options and I'd like to see more of the skills and leveling plus the story concept got me interested.

I'm glad the negative reviews are pouring in for this game. I just found out today that it won't be region free, so my broke Aussie ass will never get to play it anyway. Then again, there have been plenty of SRPGs I've loved that everyone else seemed to hate.

It pains my soul to say this, but Atlus is really ripping off their fans with this game.
They refused to state on their forums whether the final game would fix the camera or not. So they're basically trying to keep people in the dark about how the final game is nigh unplaybable.
Shame too, the setting/scenario is pretty much made of win and then some.

The graphics being meh would be fine.
The game(demo) sucked.
The camera is inverted both ways and on 100x speed...there's no bird eye view of your units, you have to bring up a really plain map, so you never have any idea what's going on...
It's a cool concept and I wanted to like it. But it's sooo broken.

Preordered this months ago. It's Atlus, it's turn based, you have werewolves in your party.
Hell, I'm probably getting Spectral Force 3 also, and as far as I know, there are no werewolves.
It's strange being a fan of a publisher, but hot damn do I love Atlus.

I still think the premise is interesting even if the demo played poorly.

I was excited wto play the demo based on Atlus and the concept. The demo was AWFUL though. the funny thing about this is I have found that I don't like a lot of the demos released these days, but I love the games.
Bioshock and Uncharted are 2 that spring to mind where I disliked the demos but ended up buying the games and enjoying them thoroughly.

@kagebutsu: Really? That's a shame if it's true.
The team behind this game is apparently the same one that did Rondo of Swords, Drone Tactics, and most recently Izuna 2. Not having played any of those either, I can't really make a judgment call here. The idea sounds promising though.

Are you kidding? Why zombie Nazis? It's almost unthinkable that as burned out as I am on WWII, I am equally ravenous for a zombie WWII (ZWWII). It's funny, and it's true, and it's true, but it's not funny. Man, ZWWII is such a good idea. I'd pay a terrifically irresponsible amount of money to see Steven Spielberg remake Saving Private Ryan like this. He could call it Saving Private Ryan From Zombie Nazis, the Vichy Werewolves, and Some Dragons. First row first day, baby. That's the way we roll where I'm from.
The game looks AWESOME. So awesome that no amount of inconsistent gameplay can deter me. I'm not even listening.

The concept is amazing but I hope the gameplay is a lot more polished than the demo would lead you to believe. It was pretty clunky, and the one battle included took far longer than it should have.
I'll still get it though, if for no other reason than there are not that many good turn based strategy games on the 360.

I've yet to find anyone that likes that camera lol. Cover system is also lol levels. I mean I can't use corner of buildings for cover? What the hell are they for then? I also went right behind a light pole and try to toss a grenade. It bounced back. Yeah that entire square around the light pole has an invisible barrier, you touch it by one pixel ur shit is gettin' sent back.
Hey Atlus/Success, get with the times, this isn't the early 90s.

Yikes, I was ready to buy this game sight unseen, but I guess I'll grab the demo just to see how bad the camera is. There are a few reviews out already, apparently EGM gave it two D's and a C, and OXM gave it a 2/10. Some site called hardcore gamer gave it a 3/5, but admitted that they wrote the official strategy guide.
From what they say, the camera is supposed to be like that?
Maybe I'll switch that preorder over to Civ Rev, and hope Spectral Force 3 is playable. I don't care about reviews, but if the camera thing makes it unplayable, then I'll have to pass.

@baxterpunch: You should probably do that. I'm already in love with Civ Rev myself. Played the demo some ten times before I forced myself to put it down so as to not make myself sick of the game before it even released. What did I do instead? Why, I went and bought Civ4 off Steam and proceeded to waste an entire weekend, including staying up until 8:00 AM on Sunday morning. Argh. If any series is fit for a "dumbing down," it's gotta be Civ, though. I'm definitely looking forward to a more streamlined Civ experience.
As for Operation Darkness... I stumbled upon the demo for it after trying the Civ Rev demo and wanting to check out similar games. I was pretty surprised to see this Kotaku article because I had assumed the game was a couple years old. The environment was extremely boring and sparse, and yeah, the camera is that bad. It's a shame, we could always use more good tactics games. I seem to recall the voice work being surprisingly good though, can't really remember.

I love the concept for this game, even beyond the zombies and nazis (A turn based strategy game involving modern military squads doesn't exist in gross WHY exactly?), but the demo...eh. That camera and the slowness in moving completely obliterated it. It's sad that such menial things as move animations can honestly destroy a game.

Atlus has a deal with Success to port a bunch of their games. Operation Darkness is their first 'next gen' experiment, seeing how well the game will sell at the price point, with apparently little regard to the quality of the game.
I expect to see the game plummet in price once all of the initial suckers have been fleeced in this pricing expierment. There's no nice way to put what a 60$ price tag on a game as bad as this is.
This does remind me of another turn based tactics military themed game that had an even larger marketing push with disappointing revenue and reviews due to gameplay and level design issues - Front Mission 4. Only the most die hard tactics fans wrenched any enjoyment out of it.. and it didn't even have the crippling UI problems that this game seems to be rife with.
Do NOT buy this game at 60$ just to 'support Atlus' - you are encouraging them to translate and publish overpriced poor quality games.

Bad demo doesn't always equal bad game. I'm sure having some time to learn the game isntead of being thrown headfirst into a mission with maybe 5 seconds to learn the control scheme on the loading screen would help.
Either way, I still want to play it.
@ejpal: A tengu badguy would make a great WW2 Japanese pilot, being a bird and everything. If Atlus can make British Werewolves vs Nazi Vampires into a game, they can totally make a WW2 game with Japanese mythological craziness, abound. I've played Otagi. That game was full of screwed up Japanese stuff. Toss Otagi into WW2, and it'd be a blast!
