Nintendo Promises Announcements For 'Core Gamers' At E3
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on June 17, 2008
Nearing the end of your tether with the "new" Nintendo? Understandable. In a lot of ways, I am (more F-Zero, less Wii Fit, thanks). The thick layer of dust burying my Wii is testament to that. I'm going to give them one more chance before writing them off for good, though, because Nintendo's Marc Franklin has said that, come E3, the company "will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in". You make a promise like that, Marc, you best stick to it.

only going to say this once on kotaku:
i've been playing games for at least 20 of my 25 years,
and i consider gaming to be a vital part of my recreational lifestyle.
that's enough of me trying to fit into "core gamer" mold.
i have 12 games for my wii, and 10 out of those are what i call great wii games.
that means 10 wii-exclusive games i enjoyed the hell out of.
i just got a ps3, and don't ever plan on getting a 360.
i can't think of 12 games i'd buy for either, much less 10 exclusive titles.
regular "hardcore" elitist gamer kids are who i expect to spread the myth
that there are no good games for the wii, not kotaku writers.

I would love a game that would actually make me want to buy a Wii. Metroid was enticing cause it wasn't some nintendo franchise that they made "mainstream." Nintendo does some things right, like giving multiple choices for controller options but nintendo does seem to cater more to their new market. That's why Mario Kart and Wii Fit are sold out and Smash Bros. sits in display cases gathering dust.

I'm okay with the "new" Nintendo.
What I'm NOT okay with is the bullcrap they've been pulling since the launch of WiiWare.
Two new WiiWare titles each week, one (maybe two if we're lucky) Virtual Console games...and nothing worth a damn.
I bought my Wii for the core franchises, the occasional quirky gem (Zack & Wiki, say) and Virtual Console. To see 1/3 of that treated as irrelevant pisses me off.

they better stick to this promise, and i expect something good, but i dont want a Zelda. yeeesh. TP was horrible, all my effort and just so i can find more rupees.

Why would you ever write a developer off for good? I don't get this whole "cut the cord" philosophy. I think the Wii has some great titles right now, and Wiiware is looking very interesting. This kind of limited thinking proves to me that you are all far from hardcore gamers. Real hardcore in my mind is wanting to play all types of games all the time, not just sepia-toned fps monotony on your HD TVs. I play my Wii all the time just as I play my Xbox 360 all the time. I'm interested in the full range of gaming experience, and I just don't know what Nintendo has done to earn this kind of reaction. They are upholding their end of the bargain with SSBB, SMG, Prime 3, and more. Those are all AAA "core gamer" titles, in my opinion.

Considering how Nintendo hate traditional gamers, I think it's prudent to lower our expectations early.
It'll be Square-Enix doing a Wii version of Mario Hoops. And Odama 2. And the FPS will be a sequel to Geist. The GameCube version of Pennant Chase Baseball will finally come out, but only for the GameCube-- won't work on the Wii. Nintendogs Wii edition announced. Mario Karaoke All-Stars confirmed. Nintendo will develop PilotWings, but it will be released for the PS3 and 360. Zelda: Four More Swords coming in October, requires 4x DS-- no online play. Space Channel Five remake coming, guest starring Yoda and Darth Vader. Wario to play Pit in Kid Icarus Wii.

I'd like to see a new installment to the Mother series as much as anyone, unfortunately, with Itoi stating that the series was done, there's virtually no chance in hell of that happening. New Metroid or Pikmin would be nice, and where is our F-Zero?! Really, Nintendo, GX was great, why haven't you built on this yet?
But something that I would like to see is maybe for once, a new IP from Nintendo. If you think about it, discounting the "Wii Play/Sports" stuff, I don't think we've seen an original IP from Nintendo on a console since Animal Crossing and Pikmin, which was about 5 years ago. There is so much you can do with a system like the Wii, and Nintendo isn't taking much advantage of it besides giving us bare-bones casual games and a fitness program. I have high hopes for these announcements, but I somehow feel like I'm going to walk away even more disgusted than I already am now.

@hk458: Zelda games are generally 3-5 years apart. Better that way, so they don't get burned out. Love the series too much for it to die like that.
I also don't get why people say "Finally a true Zelda-next gen!" and scoff such gems as Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. But hey, I think they're all just fine 'n dandy. Yeah, I know you didn't say that. Just a mini rant.
Oh, but a Metroid DS game would make me happy.
ANd.....GOLDEN SUN 3!!!
And....info on AC: Wii
And Kid Icarus, no doubt...
And a platform Donkey Kong.
And... more games with the GCN controller (love for GCN was too short, anyways)

I was somewhat excited to get ahold of one after seeing what it could do, but I'm quite glad that, even to this day, I still haven't purchased one. It would have been a tremendous expense with no payoff, thus far. I could probably tally the games I'd have bought on two hands, if I was conservative, but I wouldn't exceed toes there. The VC would be my best friend if I bought one.
Long story short, even the notion of just a "core gamers" announcement turns up my ears at this point, and I'm pretty damned hardcore. That's a bad spot for Nintendo if it takes that little to interest me. I'd rather be drowning in good games I won't be able to play properly than to have nothing but mediocre ports and minigame collections to slog through.

@AchievmentSlave: No hard drive, just 512MB of internal flash memory, which can be extended through SD cards (2GB max).
The problem is you can't play downloaded games (Virtual Console or Wiiware) off the SD cards, nor can you use the save files stored on them.
As a consequence, if your internal memory is full, you have to keep transferring files to and from your SD cards, which can be a pain.
Furthermore, the more Wii channels come out (weather, news, internet browser, the Nintendo channel), the less available space is left on the internal memory. Which is why so many gamers are hoping for a better storage solution.
Personally, I'd be fine with simply being able to run things off the SD cards. I'm confident Nintendo will come up with something somewhere down the line, but sooner would be better than later.
I'd put the recent "geeks and otakus" comment into the "look at the bright side" category: by exacerbating the impatience of Wii owners, it might accelerate things.

Nintendo and George Lucas share a very similar place in my heart these days. As a child, I deified them. As an adolescent, I revered them through rocky times and hoped for the best in the future. As an adult, I feel that now my nostalgia has been thoroughly mined out they have very little new or interesting to offer me.
Then again, I see how children react to the Wii and realize that they're essentially boarding the train I'm leaving. Same with Star Wars. I thought the prequel trilogy was digital vomit, but you still see little kids running around with lightsabers and pretending like they're Darth Vader. That's awesome. Even with my disenchantment and total lack of enthusiasm for either, what kind of an asshole would I be for "hating" Star Wars or Nintendo when we've all been that kid.
In short? We're 18 and no longer the youngest kid in the house. There's either the option of moving out, or hanging around like an angry pedophile. Either way, we're no longer the first priority.

I'm confused. Why would you write Nintendo off?
Is Mario galaxy, Metroid Prime, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Battalion Wars and Fire Emblem in the last 9 months not good enough for you? What more do possibly you want from one publisher?
Nintendo, despite their casual games, have been the only ones supplying you with your "hardcore" games on the Wii...and they've made a LOT more "hardcore" games than "casual" games, too.
I'll never, for the life of me, understand why people continually hold Nintendo to such a different standard than Sony or Microsoft.

I really think it's Kid Icarus. That's why there hasn't been any news of Nintendo accepting Factor 5's pitch for the franchise. They've already been working on one. Star Fox is another series that is never too far behind after the launch of a Nintendo console.
PLEASE, not another Zelda this soon unless it's just a remake. I have to confront Miyamoto with my epic theory on the series before I can feel safe with them adding to the chronology.

I just had a brilliant idea. I believe we need to make the heads of Nintendo sit down and watch one of those cheesy late 80's early/mid 90's family television shows (Im thinking full house) where on the children (preferably a preteen/early teens) start ignoring their true friends and start hanging out with the 'cool kids'. By the end of the show, the daughter/son realizes that the 'cool' kids arent really their true friends, and the friends that they started to ignore/tease are the ones that have been with them through the bad and the good and are, in the end, their true friends.
Because, Nintendo, Mr. Tanner is right, at the end of the day (or 30 minutes), the friends that liked you from the very start are the friends that like you for who you are, not what accessories you have!

I sat outside and waited over (a very cold) night for the Wii on launch day. The ideas and concepts that the Wii brought to mind were exciting to say the least. I have yet to have the Wii deliver ANY of the great potential I saw in it prior to launch. The only game to interest me as of late is boom blox. However, I cannot, for the life of me, justify spending 50 dollars on that game. 20 bucks? you bet. But money as tight as it is, it is a wiser financial investment for me to spend 10 more dollars and get the return of a triple A title such as Metal Gear Solid 4, the Orange Box, Gears of War, or Grand Theft Auto 4. The amount offered in titles on the PS3 or 360 justify (for the most part) the price tag. In my opinion, nearly every game that has been released for the Wii (aside from Zelda and Mario Galaxy which, consequently are the only two Wii games I own) do NOT offer enough value to justify spending that kind of money. I know there are other good games out for the Wii, and I know the console will sell well no matter what any of us say. But I sat outside on a freezing midwest november night in hopes and ideas of great sword fighting games, unique and exciting game play elements, 1:1 controls on sports games, and the revival of Nintendo franchises that utilize and integrate motion controls. In reality, what we got was a replacement to "push button A". I want everyone, even the people that love the Wii to consider every Wii game they played, and I challenge anyone to show me a game where "flick Wii remote up" couldn't be replaced by "press A button". Mario galaxy was a great game, but honestly, wouldn't it have been just as good on the Gamecube? The "revolution" was suppose to change the way we played games, but so far all we have gotten are games that replace a button press with a flick of the wrist, and at gimped graphics.
In conclusion (I apologize for the length of this comment), I would like to state that I still own my Wii, in hopes that this gimmick phase will eventually pass and quality titles will be released. My faith has been tested, but I still hope that one day, after this fad passes, the promises and hopes we had when it was known as the Revolution will come to be. Until that happens, it will sit there, with its red light on, while my PS3 and 360 continue to get use.

Even if Nintendo announces Kid Icarus, it will most likely be scheduled for 2009 just like how Nintendo announced both Mario Kart and Wii fit at least year's E3 and they weren't ready until the next year. I'm sure we can expect more game delays from the titles announced at E3 too.
As far as Nintendo titles go, we already know about Wario Land Shake, Fatal Frame 4 and Disaster:Day of Crisis and Mario Sluggers. According to Reggie, we might just get one other big game for the Wii that should be ready for the holiday season. It could be Animal Crossing but something like Pikmin 3 probably has less of a chance to come out this year.
There's also the chance that Capcom has another Wii project to announce so there's that too.
I would like to know more about Konami's Castlevania Wii project, what Retro Studio's is up to (we probably won't hear any announcements from them at E3), Kirby Superstar Deluxe, Metal Slug 7, Oboro Muramasa Youtouden, de Blob, The Conduit and Mad World. There's also Wiiware titles and possibly new Wii channels too. I also wonder if Kojima will actually make something for the Wii like he has been hinting about several times in past interviews but it's probably too early for him to talk about his next project.
Unfortunately, it does not seem likely that Nintendo will reveal a hard drive solution for the Wii at E3. I just think it would be too good to be true.
I'm hoping for a new Starfox game but we will probably have to wait a year or two for that. A new Zelda title is probably in early development especially since it typically around 3 or so years to make so I don't think Nintendo will be ready to talk about it or discuss a new sequel to Mario Galaxy.

@StagnatedLives: You actually think so-called "core gamers" are the true friends type before the Wii? Where were they during the N64 and GCN eras? Core gamers are fickled and whiny. They want all games to be designed to fit their tastes, or its shit. They complained about Nintendo being kiddy or casual, and how Nintendo betrayed them. That's a bunch of bullshit from a bunch of whiny idiots; Nintendo games haven't changed, only the players have.
Why should Nintendo cater to the whims of a demographic that has largely abandoned them over the last 2 console generations? They'll still put out their main series for the Nintendo fanboys, but I don't know why they would put such a large effort into pleasing a demographic that'll likely end up trashing them anyways as long as Nintendo games feel like Nintendo games.

the more i think about it, "hardcore gamer" has turned into a term for ppl who like watered down pc games. reading some comments.. games that ppl laud as the true gaming titles are just pc games with mid range specs. gears of war? orange box? bioshock? call of duty 4? oblivion? mass effect? before the xbox, none of those games would have been big releases on a console. im glad the wii offers an alternative to those kinds of titles, because i didnt like the flavor of pc gaming when i was growing up, and i dont like the flavor of its console younger brethren now.

Silent Hill Wii...it'll be a game set in silent hill, except it'll have short, pastel colored, bubbly characters. Basically, Animal Crossing, with a Silent Hill theme. It'll be a cross-produced game between Konami and Nintendo.
Sorry, I held so much faith in Nintendo through the N64, then they gave me hope with their pre-Gamecube launch, which was quickly stomped on..when the Wii was coming out, and everyone was badmouthing it, I defended it because of the possibilities for us "core gamers". Yet, once again, Nintendo has let me down, and I've lost any and all faith that they can cater to anyone, but those casual gamers who don't want depth or any real story in their games.

@TheIrishNinja:
Nintendo doesn't know what they are doing with the series. However the WW art direction on a console has to be out of the question. It seems perfect for a hand held but I don't want anything to do with it again. I liked WW, but once is enough.
Nintendo has said TP will be the last of its kind, and was made for the fans. I enjoyed the game because it was a great title with solid gameplay and had a lot of re-playability. What is wrong with nostalgia? I had more fun with the game because it did take so much from OoT. In the same breath it was its own game, and just because it looked similar doesn't mean it was a total rip-off.
I understand what you are saying but I do not know many fans that want Nintendo to continue the cell shaded crap on a console Zelda. I want Nintendo to take more of an MM approach in the next game. Make it darker, make Link have at least a little depth, and forget Ganondorf/Zelda for a title or two.
I fear they will take the next one in the same direction as WW and PH because of the large casual base the Wii has. TP was easy but WW was not a challenge what-so-ever. It was made to get new people into the series, which is fine but do it on the DS.
The series has to change to keep my interest and stay my favorite franchise (rather then being the "remember when" title so many other Nintendo franchises have now become), but WW is not the way for that to happen.

"My Wii is covered with dust"? Check.
"I sold my Wii"? Check.
Don't you people ever get tired having to constantly remind everyone how hardcore you are?
Now let's see, I'm looking at my gaming shelf. I have 9 Wii games. Pokemon Battle Revolution, Metroid Prime Corrution, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Trauma Center: New Blood, Zack and Wiki, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Okami, WarioWare. Of those, only WarioWare could be considered casual. And three of those are 3rd-party offerings. And I don't have Mario Kart yet because I'm broke, not because I don't want it.
So clearly the argument that Nintendo ignores the "core" and that "core" gamers have nothing to do is a load of crap. You seriously have to deliberately ignore the Wii software library to make that argument work. And you know what? Every single thread here does just that. Because that is the only logical way you can claim that the Wii is for casual gamers and "soccer moms" only - by denying the very fabric of reality itself, because God only knows that would happen before you ever admit you're wrong (thank you Yahtzee for letting me steal that.)

@StagnatedLives: Huh. Interesting. I could have sworn Z&W was less than $50. It might have been $40, though. I don't think it took the plunge all the way down to $30. But that's a really interesting comment, after what a lot of Kotakuites said about how they'd be more interested in Boom Blox if it were $30.
It's weird. A lot of big games can be criticized for their gameplay length. Metroid Prime 3 seemed short-ish... but definitely longer than Gears of War, so color me confused.

@StagnatedLives:If the market is so flooded with party games, then list them, because the top 10 and for that matter, most of the top 20 games are not party games. It's hard to read your comments when you sneak in talking points like 'gimmick' and 'Only AAA titles could be done on the Cube." because it speaks to someone who hasn't played enough games or sees the bigger picture.

@BtownDesignGuy:
I followed Z&W until it was released. I'm a huge fan of the old point and click adventures, something that has sadly died out unless you resort to flash games on the internet.
However, after I heard about the length of the game, no matter how excited I was about it, I just couldn't spring 50 bucks on it... I wanted to support them so bad for what they are doing, but, unfortunately, ramen noodles needed to be bought and I couldn't justify the purchase.
Maybe its dropped in price.... Ill have to check that out while I'm at work today
(also, the lack of copies available also hurt sales, that game was hard to find!)

Please lets hope they announce and release something!! While I played quite a bit of Wii last year, it has been pretty much sitting on the shelf since Christmas as they just have not released anything beyond Mario Kart Wii that has interested me. My 360 is getting all of the play time right now.

@Foxstar Sixtail:
No, in translates into, There is a huge amount of potential in the Wii. But right now none of that potential is being tapped, which is why there is such an low attach rate. they are selling on the idea of a gimmick, they started a craze with it, but now that everyone has one, no one really knows what to do with it. Why is the attach rate so low? because the market is flooded with poorly made "party" games.
If you would have taken the time to read my comment (its fine if you dont want to, but than don't respond) than you would have realized that I never once hinted that the "wii really isn't for me" In fact I believe I say at the very end how I still have faith in the Wii. Nintendo is to busy caught up in its own hype to realize that after this sale trend is over (and it WILL end, it always does), they have nothing left. Right now, the only true sustainable triple A titles on the Wii are Galaxy and Zelda, both games that would have been the exact same on a console sans motion controls.
Read a comment before you reply to it.

@wild homes 5: no disassemble!: Sure, people are entitled to their opinions, but those opinions are pretty annoying if they have the appearance of being uninformed. And when you've got a game like Zack & Wiki, the best throwback to classic point-and-click adventure puzzles since Tim Schafer left LucasArts in 2000, turning out to be a complete sales dud because even the "hardcore" players who bought a Wii are too elitist to play something that isn't drenched with blood and gore, it really makes Wii haters appear ignorant. Not that I'm actaully calling anyone ignorant, I'm just saying it makes them look ignorant (and increases the likelihood that others will flame them).
Metroid Prime 3 also should have sold better than it did. That was *the* game people were waiting for, and it only received mediocre sales.
It's one thing for someone to say, "I know the Wii has some games out there that a lot of people love, but it just doesn't appeal to me." It's something else to say, "I have a Wii and I don't play it because all its games are shit, but I won't qualify my opinion by explaining why some of its most beloved games don't entertain me, even if it makes it look like I haven't even played them, and thus appear to have an uninformed opinion." It's people like that who punish developers for even trying to reach out to us when they could easily cash in on the "casual" crowd.
@snowlock: 12? Really? I loves me some Wii, but I can't think of 12 games that interest me! Would you mind listing them?

They're getting pretty good at promising. They can certainly deliver, they have a few times, well, including a GameCube port and a PS2 port...
But I'll believe it when I see it. As for dust collecting stories, I had my Wii off for the last few weeks so it didn't get so hot. Last night I turned it on a read a few news articles and put it to sleep. This morning I noticed the new software update, but it didn't matter so I shut it off again. I guess there's always homebrew! ...though I'm running most of what I would there on my PSP and DS.
I'd check out Wiiware once they offer a decent storage solution...
@MassiveMendoza:
IMO that goes to N64 - that's where I couldn't justify following them anymore. Sadly from that, I didn't realize the Cube was good until it was almost done for.
...then expecting a GameCube with wide popular support, I picked up a Wii...

@BtownDesignGuy:
You may be right, it could have been 40, but its the exact same thing as boom blox. To me, those titles should sit at 25 dollars. Its hard for me to spend more than that... I dont know, it's and odd thing, but I also have a hard time spending 40 bucks on a game for a handheld system (PSP)
@Foxstar Sixtail:
Name ONE Wii game that is NOT a party game that would not have worked on the gamecube? (Aside from Zak an Wiki :[) It IS a gimmick when it doesnt add value, instead of pushing a button, you are flicking your wrist down. There is NO added value, its just trading one action for another.
As for listing what I consider poor Wii party games? here:
Carnival Games
Game Party
Ultimate Board Game Collection
Smarty Pants
Mario Party 8
Playground
Boogie
Donkey Kong barrel Blast
WiiPlay (Did anyone honestly buy for any other reason than the remote?)
Super Monkey Ball Banana
Pool Party
Tamagotchi: Party On!
Cranium Kabookii
Balloon Pop
Chicken Shoot
Battle of the Bands
Is that enough? seriously, its fine if you want to defend your stance behind the Wii, but even the most die hard brand blinded fanboy must realize and accept that the wii game selection is flooded with crap "cash in" games.

@MassiveMendoza:So where are the numbers to back up your debate? Calling the Wii Nintendo's worse system because they aren't sucking on your taint? Please. Go back to GameFAQ's with that crap.

@StagnatedLives:We agree to disagree, but I think your bias is clouding everything. And yes, the Wii has shovelware. So does the PS2 and every single game system known to man. How is that Nintendo's fault?
Also calling Wiiplay shovelware - fail.

@TheIrishNinja:
I agree Twighlight Princess seemed stale, whereas Wind Waker was exciting and new. A lot of people were fooled by the "grown up" looking graphics of TP.
But seriously, where's the deep exploration games that I want to play? I'm a huge Nintendo fan. We used to get games like this all the time. Now it's just two titles a year- tops!

@Foxstar Sixtail:
Nope. I'm simply saying I based my Wii buy on the success I had with the GameCube.
Ultimately I'm not placing blame, but I've had very little luck finding games that engage me long-term on it. More than half of my ten are basically wagglers/party games/"arcade" games. They're good, but after a few weeks they wear out.
Whoever is to blame, my Wii now gets less play than my GameBoy Color, that's all...

I'm hoping for a new Pikmin. And for my outside hope, I want Sega to announce a new Skies of Arcadia.
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: They announced that they were working on a Zelda game already, so I doubt that is it. Though we may get some new information on it.
@Mr. Fap☆Fap!: If you ever figure that out, let me know.
