Old School Mega Man 9 Coming To WiiWare
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:30 AM on June 27, 2008
More details have surfaced on the first official Mega Man sequel since 1996's Mega Man 8 for the PlayStation. Revealed earlier this month by the Australian Office Of Film and Literature Classification, the latest issue of Nintendo Power features an interview with series creator Keiji Inafune as well as screenshots from the title, revealing that not only will the game be released as WiiWare, it will retain the classic look and feel of the original NES versions of the game.
The robot bosses for the new title include Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and possibly Splash Woman. Splash Woman? Really?
Definitely a strange move, going back in time graphically and gameplay-wise like this, but what better way to return to the classic series than actually returning to the classic series?

By the way, doesn't this remind you guys of Contra 4, how they went back to their roots with that series, too?
More games really should do this... Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Metroi... okay, maybe not Metroid...
Like many others, I wasn't even into this game until I saw the new style- MM9FTW!

Wowsers!!! A Kotaku thread about something on the Wii and there's not an over abundance of hate filled post?!?! Sweet Baby Jebus!
Hopefully this plays like Mega Man 2, that game was one of the very first games I owned for NES besides S. Mario Bros.
Insta-purchase for me. That being said Ninty needs to get this storage capacity together. Between the Nintendo Channel and Samurai Showdon taking up like 260 blocks (out of 400) not to mention the other stuff I have on my Wii, it's getting a little hairy.
COME ON NINTENDO GET THIS @#$#% TOGETHER!!!

I'm glad they went back to 8-bit graphics. I never liked Megaman 8 much because it all felt so awkward with the fluidity of the visuals.
Megaman 2, however, is great for many reasons, the 8-bitness being one of them.
Also, Splash Woman? That sounds cool, the first female boss in the original Megaman series.

They would be silly to not have a PSN and Live release. Especially since they hinted towards a new mega man game when Commando 3 was released.

@kitenai: You're getting your dates mixed up. Megaman 7 was the first game to feature the cartoony look, which is actually completely and totally in line with Keiji Inafune's designs. Also, X came out on the SNES at around the same time as 7, followed by 2 other games. When 8 originally came out on the Saturn, and later on the PSX, the X series was going on its 4th installment.
I agree that 8 played beautifully, but I loved its art style above all else, which is why this step backwards is so disappointing. I mean come on! We've had SIX games like this already and when the series actually advanced they decide it's time to go retro??

i dunno about you but i thought Megaman 8 PLAYED spectacularly but i thought it looked too cartoony for my taste(which probably lead to the creation of the more hard edge spinoff Megaman X). the return to NES style graphics seems like a genius move to me because thats how everyone remembers old megaman being like.

This makes me angry. Not because I don't like Classic Megaman. I love Classic Megaman. But this just seems so backwards to me that I can't help but feel angry. Megaman 8 was such a spectacular game, and now Megaman 9 is going to be some novelty Wii Ware title? Why couldn't they have made a real sequel and added this as a bonus? Megaman ZXA on the DS did that and it was great! This just reeks of laziness.
On a side note: I first read Jewel Man as Jew Man. Megaman's powerup after defeating him would be Star of David shuriken. If that were the case, I'd be sold regardless of the retro look.

How easy must this game have been to develop in this day and age if it truly has all the graphical and processing power of the NES versions? I mean, sure, it'll more than likely be great for old school fans. And the lack of focusing on GRAPHIX and POWER might mean for more ingenuity in terms of design.
It's certainly an interesting experiment to go backwards like this. There was nothing wrong with a lot of the old NES games, and at this point, doing things in this style will have a high nostalgia factor and more than likely do well with consumers.
Kind of like Cave Story, only from an professional company/developer.

@Willy105: Indeed. I have a huge place in my heart for Mega Man, but every time I play one of the NES entries in the series, I can't get past the clunky controls and the difficulty that's more based on the limitations of the platform than on good design. I would love them to give us the same old-school look without the same old-school feel. And please keep the 8-bit music. Mega Man games (and Capcom games in general) had some of the best NES soundtracks.

Capcom pulled a "Sega Sonic" with The X series and filled up with horrible supporting characters and really shitty gameplay mechanics.
Leave the X series alone. A 16 bit remake wouldn't have the same impact because there are still 16 bit-ish games being released on stuff like the DS. 8 bit games however, have aged better and have certain mojo about them.

This is truly wonderful news. Mega Man's been such a lost franchise over the last few years, with stupid offshoot titles and endless boring sequels. Bringing it back to the roots is PERFECT. And putting it out on the Wii, where we've perceived (accurately or not) a dearth of quality traditional titles? That's just a really, really excellent move. But I do hope they could also consider doing a complete HD overhaul (a la Bionic Commando Rearmed) of the original series for LIVE and PSN. That would be lovely.
Yay Capcom!

Very cool news!
I'm assuming that it will be 8bit in style only (not in actual processing limitation) - compared to the old NES Megaman games, "9" could possibly have a much more expansive color palette, no slow down on high on-screen character counts (no sprite flickering included), better quality music, various types of scaling sprites, and little moments of graphical enhancements. Just little fixes to the detractors of the originals.
If it is like I imagine it, I'd easily pay 10 dollars - no question.

To those hoping to get away from the "classic" and "clunky" gameplay, I really hope Capcom ignores these requests. The gameplay wasn't really broken, and the way the game played added to the challenge.
That's not to say hard = bad controls.. I believe the controls were great for the game, and if you were good, you could make it through levels with relative ease.
I'd hate to see Capcom ruin the classic MM line by changing it to make it more "accessible" (easy).

some excerpts
"For controlling the Blue Bomber, players will be able to hold the Wii Remote sideways in NES-style, with the control pad moving Mega Man and the two buttons set to Jump and Fire. Doesn't look like there will be any flashy shaking going on here. "
"He goes on to say that if he did push to have a new game like the classic Mega Man made, it would be criticized for things like being simplistic, outdated, or too expensive, thus making it too difficult to bring it out in the current climate. And that's where programs like WiiWare come in, from which the popularity of retrogaming services such as the Virtual Console lead to the group to decide to make a new "NES" game. "
"And in addition to the graphics, the music will be styled in an 8-bit fashion, as well as 8-bit styled cinema cutscenes. "I am sure when people see the opening scenes- new content with 8-bit graphics- they're going to be very excited."

Granted, I love classic Megaman, but I'm also not afraid to admit that the Battle Network series was actually good and then simply got out of hand.

Holy crap! This fantastic news! Like "I must be dreaming" good.
While there were some damn good games among them, the 16+bit Megaman games could never really captured the style that just oozed from the NES ones, and eventually over complicated the gameplay.
I've always felt the NES Megaman games were some of the best looking (and playing, and sounding) games in history. While not technically impressive, they used what they had to create an unforgettable style. It just makes me so happy to see them taking a chance and returning to the classic form. Thank you, Capcom!! :D

This is possibly the only game in which I would actually support DLC, if they did it... But only if such DLC were original levels, complete with their bosses, and the ability to unlock their weapons to use in other levels and against other bosses.
I'd love to be able to fight the various flame-type bosses with other flame weapons.
Also have some sort of level change based on what bosses have been beat and whatnot.

it's gotta play like mega man 4, with the super mega buster and the ground slide.
this is a genius move on capcom's part, i've been telling my friends for years that if capcom made a classic style sequel- it would be glorious.
the decline in sequel gameplay for series' with classic roots is (inexplicably) directly proportional to their progression into 3d, just look at castlevania, megaman x, sonic.
games like the megaman zero series, or the sonic rush series don't get enough credit for being so true to their predecessors, most likely because of their being marketed on handheld systems. i've been dying to see something like megaman 9 hit a mainstream console.
god bless guilty gear for sticking to 2d in its fighting games, same with all the "HD remix" games. the framerate and resolution for sprite animation is still untapped in console gaming as far as i'm concerned, if more 2d stuff gets published on consoles, the future will be bright.

@Ryodestined: I'd prefer having the consistent and familiar feel to the gameplay over prettier visuals and Mega Man 8-esque controls.
Some people call the old controls wonky, but I found them to be the most responsive and easiest to adapt to.
I can pick up any NES Mega Man and kick the shit out of it... whereas when I play MM7 or 8 or even the X series, I have to take a stage or 2 to re-familiarize myself with the jump heights.
I hope this trend continues for Mega Man. Though, I'm not so convinced ALL classic NES franchises could follow in the same vein. Some could, but most would still need some changing.

So let me get this straight. MM7 is released on the SNES with 16bit graphics, MM8 is released on the PSX and Saturn with 32bit graphics and FMVs, while MM9 is going to be released as a NES game to make it look like PREVIOUS MM games? Oh Nintendo, you so crazy.
I would be happier believing Megaman and Bass was MM9. The only worthy thing I can think of is that it will explain the gap between the MM series and MMX series which the plot so far revealed doesn't seem to suggest (although the possibility is still out there). And I would much rather see this gap explained at least in PS1/N64 type technology.
