One Stop Shopping For Your Diablo III Trailer Needs
Posted by Owen Good at 12:45 PM on June 29, 2008
There is an assload (U.S. measurement, roughly 12 percent lighter than the Imperial arseload and metric arseload) of Diablo III videos over on Gametrailers and assorted game video sites. I know about them all, up here in the Kotaku tower, and I could spend all day posting them. Instead, I've embedded this one, which features 20 minutes -- an Imperial shitload -- of gameplay. And it is indeed awesome. Links to the other trailers are after the jump. There are many, including a series featuring the specific abilities of Witch Doctor and Barbarian classes. Enjoy, and we'll see you back here tomorrow.

No, no, I'd like to see it on Wii, as well. At it's heart, it's all point-and-click. Totes doable on Wii.

While I'm really looking forward to the game, I have to say one of the comments made by the lead designer seems really disrespectful. It kind of put a haze on this whole thing for me:
"If you've been paying attention, you'd know that Jay Wilson is the Lead Designer on Diablo 3, and he recently took to the stage in Paris, with two other Blizzard designers, to talk about behind-the-scenes design work for the game.
Once he got his "clicky thing" to work, he has to show off the "cool art", before explaining that the original Diablo was really the first of its kind, the first "real" role-playing game, and it really revolutionised the gaming market."
Apparently Blizzard's success has gotten to their head as they just called every RPG released before January 2nd, 1997 a fake RPG.

The controls really make me want a Wii version, given how simple they are.
Alas, it would be naive to even bother dreaming about that. Oh well...been a while since I played a PC game, anyway.

Wow. I take a few days vacation, come back to Kotaku, and it's Christmas in June. Seriously, Diablo III? I mean...HOLY FUCKING BALLS OF SHIT.
ahem...sorry about that.
Yeah, this is looking one-hundred percent awesome. There are some games I get excited for, but there hasn't been a game I've been thoroughly pumped for in a very long time. For a while there I thought that the edge had left me; the last game I was really excited about was Command and Conquer III, and it (for me, at least) was a total letdown. I haven't even finished it. But this...man...this makes me want to reinstall D2 yet again, and take another character to Lvl. 99, yet again...I am absolutely excited.
Boomdayada indeed.

@InsidiousTuna: Plus the graphics don't seem to be anything too rediculous (it's the art that makes it looks good) and the gameplay doesn't seem to require heavy processing, (no crazy ai, no twitch reaction combos, top down pre rendered environments) does it? They could pull off a pretty darn good wii version if they wanted.

if this game is made with PC controls first in mind then thats good, if its ported to other consoles after? i dont care/mind because i know il be playing the PC version. so theres no need to get all bent out of shape about it.
@Nirolak:
well there was fallout right? so we pretty much know blizz is exaggerating, which of course is very douche bag of blizz to say. But you cant count JRPGs as RPGs those are just level up characters Games LUCGs and are the most linear games out there.

There's actually an assload measurement system at kotaku... This is why I love it here! XD

Looks gorgeous. Too bad it still looks like it's using the whole random item/prefix/suffix system that sucks so bad, and at least the first section looked like it was still all random dungeon crap. Give me nicely designed handcrafted goodness instead of that RNG laziness any day.
Still too early to say for now, but unless things change looks like it's a skip for me, like all the rest of it's total RNG ilk.
@Nirolak: Which is funny, because I've always considered Diablo a dumbing down for the masses, and a turning point for the worse when it comes to RPG's.

There are lots of pieces of software popping up to interface a Wiimote with a PC via bluetooth. It might be possible by D3's release to play it on your PC with a wiimote and have full functionality, i.e. certain swinging motions indicate "left mouse button", the b button could be mapped to "right mouse button". So you swing to attack and trigger to cast a spell.
Hell, might be worth a shot trying now with Diablo II.

@Fishballs: I'm horribly opposed to a Wii version. They would have to change the game completely as to not destroy a million and one arms trying to mimick a million and one clicks per second that every mouse of every D3 player will sound out in unison.

@JokesJokes: I'm pretty sure that those backgrounds are realtime. Add that to the physics engine (Havok?) and way that the characters interact with the background (reactively flapping curtains, falling masonry) and what appears to be really really lovely texturing, I'd say that there is quite a bit of heavy processing going on.
I'm not opposed to a Wii version, but it'll have to be pretty cut down in terms of graphics and features.

Looks pretty good. However, it looks to me as if Blizzard's art department is getting rather lazy, as the game has a definite "World of Warcraft" vibe going which I don't really care for. One of the things I liked about the Diablo series was that it was totally different in style from the Warcraft series. It's a shame Blizzard seems to be going for a homogenized "cartoony" look now across all their franchises (that goes for StarCraft II as well).

Glad to see my Barbarian friend again. I wish I would have saved my Diablo II character from way back when. I have the special edition around here somewhere . Nice to see the Barbarian is still a bad ass wrecking ball. Crosses fingers for this to hit shelves by early 09'.

@Nirolak:
I actually saw the live stream of that panel and I think you need to choose your blogs better. To paraphrase, Jay Wilson said that Diablo was the first MAINSTREAM RPG of it's type. By that, he meant completely randomized. The only other games like Diablo before then were rogue/angband/other ones I may not remember that were definitely not mainstream.

It's amazing how finished this game seems and yet it's not anywhere near done by Blizzard standards.

This game is sexy. I absolutely love the Havok Physics. Watch closely as the bodies fall off of bridges, walls crumble onto enemies, and blood sprays from wounds. This game is going to be awesome. SC 2 + Diablo 3 = Computer orgasm. I cannot wait.

@Fishballs:
Dude, you are totally underestimating what the Wii can do. Brawl runs on the Havoc engine and everything else you mentioned was being done on the PS2, if not earlier.
I agree that the game would take a hit to the extent that the textures would have to be brought down to the Wii's resolution, but I don't personally think that would be that bad in a game like Diablo. If they were to get the quality and detail on par with RE4, I can't imagine there would be many complaints.
