PlayStation 3 Graphics Chip Shrinks To Wee 65nm This Fall
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on June 27, 2008
Kaz Hirai and the boys at Sony are all about profitability. They don't just throw these slides together for kicks; they mean it. As part of the company's accelerated "cost down efforts", the PlayStation 3 will be getting smaller, cooler, cheaper, more efficient and generally awesomer RSX graphics chips starting this fall. We're talking 65nm manufacturing processes, people. The good stuff.
Kaz noted in his corporate strategy speech earlier today that the Cell processor has been manufactured with 65nm process technology as of "last holiday". Both were originally manufacture at 90nm, which was charming at first, but now seems rather vulgar. We're updating our console power consumption charts in anticipation of the new RSX's release.

I think he was being sarcastic because they dropped the 60 gig which had the best PS2 support, and now they're making even more changes so chances are they'll drop another feature.

This is a neat touch, but seeing as the current model doesn't really have a problem with noise or heat, it's really just good news for Sony's bottom line-- which is great for them. It just doesn't do much for us.
If this was the 360, though, man-- I'd really welcome a cooler, quieter system. Great games, but that thing is like a chainsaw when it's running. A chainsaw that's on fire.

Just to add to my last comment, when my PS2 started messing up i sold it for $145 and was going to buy another one, but then they started comming out with the PS2 slim, which was WAY to slim, and that turned me off to it...As a matter of fact, why do they even redesign there consoles peroid? they did with the PSX and that one I diddnt like either, then the PS2, which they completey fucked up by making it way to slim...i really hope they dont redisgn the PS3(though im sure they will) and late adopters dont get screwed out of a crappy very breakable PS3 like what happened with the PS2...-_-

I really don't think you'll ever see a built in IR receiver. They'd be very little use for it other than for things like a universal remote. You think that's enough to warrant Sony adding such a component? Especially with their goal of "reducing the number of components"? Nope, never going to happen.
Just get the Nyko Blu-wave. It works just fine.

I've been hoping for an announcement like this since this article: [kotaku.com]
I've been thinking about buying the MGS4 bundle, but I don't know anything about MGS so I haven't really been in a rush. I'll hold out until this new hardware now. Hopefully it will be in a bundle with LittleBigPlanet and two dual-shock controllers. I'd love if it is smaller too, and I have heat concerns with my cabinet setup currently, so the smaller and more heat efficient they can make it all, the better.
What I would also really like to see is an IR receiver. Like, so you can use a universal remote with it when you're watching movies and whatnot. From what I understand there are some after-market solutions, but it would be much nicer if it just had that support built-in. I refuse to buy the Sony blue-tooth remote control. I put considerable money and effort into setting up my entire theater system to use one RF/IR universal remote.

Tough decisions indeed.
Sony needs to just stick with one SKU. Sony is going for the traditional hardcore market from last generation... which is a fine strategy. But that hardcore crowd is savvy. We know there are different features between the SKUs. We keep up w/ the news and know more SKUs are on the way. I don't know anyone who will spend $500 bucks knowing a better model will be coming out in 4 months.
Sony's SKU system is a cluster-fuck.

Quote from article above.

@psychobaka: Yes, but were talking GPUs here, even the just released HD 4850 just got down to 55nm, and nvidia's new GTX 280 is still a 65nm, so its not like they are doing this half ass its really an improvement over the previous 90nm chip.

A lot of you guys are misinformed about what the die shrink to 65nm will entail. First off, only the RSX chip will be shrinking; the Cell was already shrunk (90nm to 65nm) going from the old 20/60GB models to the new 80/40GB models. The Cell and its SPEs take up a lot more room than the RSX, and there was no redesign of the system.
Shrinking the die of the RSX means that they'll save a few millimeters in the dimensions of something that's already only a couple of thumbnails in area and wafer thin.
What this means is lower power consumption, which leads to lower heat needing to be dissipated, which means a possibly quieter system, all the while reducing costs for Sony. The system itself will look and have the same features as any other PS3. It's not going to magically allow more stuff, just like the Cell shrink didn't do anything of that sort.

@LittleBigPlaneteer:
You're probably right that they won't add it. No real benefit to them, and they'd canibalize their own remote control sales.
That Nyko remote looks like an option too. Of course, all I really want is the little USB IR Receiver though. I'd just hook that up to my RF IR-Blaster and I'm good to go. I wonder if those are possible to acquire individually?

Your quote is referring to the Cell processor. This new announcement is regarding the RSX graphics processor. Different things. So, the freshest hardware is still to come this fall. This is probably isn't that significant to most people since it's not like there is a graphical upgrade or anything like that. But for myself at least it is worth waiting a few more months for.

The question is will Sony want to keep bleeding here? They lost 3.3 billion on the ps3 now, and executives must be asking at what point do they realize that they likely will not make any money on the ps3?
The numbers are they lost 2.16 billion in 2007, and in 2008 they lost 1.16 billion. I see why they are doing the big PR dance right now, since these huge losses just came out with their annual report. These numbers are making a lot of people nervous. (if they don't turn around..there will not be a ps4 IMHO).

The best news for me is that this should lead to lower power consumption. That's a real factor for me as electricity costs money, and I already have an HD TV that is a real power hog (I noticed my bills increase noticeably after getting it). Nice to know that when I eventually get a PS3 it'll be cheaper to run.

@DugDawg: It's probably Japanese business slang that they didn't bother translating because it still kind of makes sense in English. Just as you can level-up your character in an RPG, and level-up your secure data communications offering, no doubt you can also cost-down your manufacturing process.
Back here in English English, even though we're now used to verbing nouns, you still can't combine random words to make a new verb like that one without it looking silly. But if you intersect 'Japanese' and 'business-speak', cost-downing something (costing-down something?) seems perfectly acceptable.
@cowondinosaur: Yes, but if they keep reducing power consumption, they can also reduce the size of coolers and PSU (which they are already doing internally, I think). If they also reducing the count of auxiliary chips and other components by combining functions, at some point in a few yeasrs they'll have the capability to make a smaller version of the system, like they did with the last one.
At least I hope so. It's kind of big at the moment so I'm hoping for a smaller one before I buy it...

Nice. If hard drives are transferrable from one PS3 to another(with all game saves intact) then by the time they shrink it down and give it the slim treatment maybe I'll re-invest in a new, meaner unit, just because a cooler running console is a longer lasting console!
The lower power consumption will come in handy down the road too.

@DugDawg: He's not completely making up terms. A "cost down" is a term used to describe re-releasing a chip using a cheaper (normally meaning smaller) process. Although there are no major design changes in terms of functionality, there is still some work involved. In other words, "accelerating cost down efforts" just means working faster to release cheaper chips.
p.s. i went through the bother of actually creating an account because after reading kotaku for awhile, i actually have a useful comment. i bet as soon as i submit, i'll see 20 responses before mine saying the same thing.
