Pong Table Blends The Real With The Virtual
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on June 5, 2008
I am a creature of basic interests. I love Space Invaders. I love Pong. In fact I own the first pair of Invader shoes and one of those limited edition Pong clocks, so when I saw this table I got way too excited... judging by the absolute silence that greeted my enthusiasm when I shared this with the others in Kotaku Tower.
Created by German designer Moritz Waldemeyer, Pong Effect uses 2400 LEDs and two track pads to essentially recreate a game of air hockey. The best part, it looks like it was created for 4-year-olds. Oh, I know how absurd that is, but does it sound like I care? It doesn't.... for those of you who can't detect the waves of enthusiasm rippling off my keyboard right now.

I had my name down for one of those limited edition pong clocks. When the time came to get my reddies out, I had no money. I've regretted not abusing my overdraft ever since.

Oh, we can feel the waves, Brian, we can fell them all right. Hope you're not feeling too lonely in your enthusiastic stupor.
Tsk, those Kotaku people really are a bunch of killjoys - I mean, really, who do they think they are, huh? Pong table not good enough for 'em?

@(俗・ ) Grey Gecko: chairs are for girly men. You could put a doily on top too but I wouldn't suggest it? Now that you remind me though, where can you keep your ice cold refreshing Coors, surely it needs Coors holders.

Does it come with a free years worth of chiropractic work to help relieve the pain you'll receive from bending over the whole time you play it? Because if it doesn't that may not be a wise investment...

Is it actually for sale or is it just in the museum like it says in the link?
That would be freaking awesome to have. I fear it would be very short lived though.

I guess the lower back pain is an added bonus.
Looks cool though except for the aforementioned and the track pad part.

wow that's neato, looks like it's very expensive though.
and they should of made it taller or give them some chairs or something because from judging that picture the people that are playing backs have got to hurt after a wile

I'm a sucker for a bouncing ball game. You should have seen Peggle... I didn't stand a chance.
I can totally get behind digital air hockey. The biggest surprise is the table doesn't look like a hobby kit (but hey, those ones are cool too.) It looks like a smart, normal table.

@fuchikoma: Heheheh cats... That being said, I kinda like the table in the video more.
On the other hand, being able to play Pong while eating breakfast would be amusing, and the interspersed food and various bowls and plates across the tabletop would make for a more exciting game.
