PS3 BioShock To Feature "Unannounced Components"
The PlayStation.Blog has a few more details on the PS3 version of BioShock as well as two new screens. From what the PlayStation.Blog hints at, this will be more than *just* a straight up PS3 port:
On top of that, because this is the first PS3 title from 2K Marin, 2K Australia and 2K Boston, we've also got another development partner with some outstanding PS3-specific coding chops helping out with the project — we can't talk about what studio that is yet, but we look forward to revealing that in the future... The Boston team is the largest chunk of the BioShock team at the moment; many of them hard at work on some of the as-yet-unannounced components of the PS3 version. I can mention the work of one Boston team member, Ian Bond, who has been optimising and refactoring the physics simulation for the game to take the maximum advantage of the PS3 hardware.
It'll be interesting to see what exactly these "unannounced components" are. Hit the jump for another PS3 BioShock screenie.

I have a PC, and this pisses me off. They better patch the PC version, otherwise it's not really fair is it?
Sony is specifically going out of its way to have this game ported to the PS3 (meaning its paying a lot of money). I'm sure that the PC and Xbox360 versions will not be getting the new features.
oh man, crazy stuff. my college roommate/amigo at boston university told me bioshock was comin to ps3 a long time ago because ian, his current roommate (at the time) was working at 2k boston.
then i saw this article and saw the name 'ian' and the gears started turning...i asked my friend and sure enough the mystical ian's last name was bond.
clearly this does not matter and is of no importance to anybody (including myself) but i just thought that was pretty cool - this "ian" must be doing a hell of a job though to get a specific mention like that...keep up the good work, ian!
bistromathics
Actually, no I didn't know that.. obviously. I mean, seriously, motion controls?? I never use them unless the game gives me no choice, AKA Folklore. Although, it is comforting to know that if I need a new vibrating device for a console, the DS3 has it covered /sarcasm/.
RPGJunky
Hopefully they'll make better endings, but what I really want is multiplayer, though that would probably be too good to be true.
Placentasaurus
@cybereality: I wonder if you're being sarcastic.
I'm sure the "unannounced features" will actually be noteworthy.
I'm hoping for better endings or potential turns in the game that won't alter the story, but may add to it.
sascha23
The new feature they added is a "slow-motion" mode when more than 3 enemies are on the screen at once. It really helps in those thick firefights!
cybereality
My favorite 360 games:
Dead Rising
Bioshock
One I was excited about:
Lost Odyssey
1 of these games is coming to the Ps3, I hope to see the sequel to another one coming to the PS3, and one is owned entirely by microsoft...
Come on Dead Rising 2 PS3!
bobtheduck
@Alex_Mexico: nothing was chopped off in widescreen mode. They designed the game in widescreen mode, and then added some additional (and therefore unnecessary) for the 3:4 format because they didn't want to letter box o chop the ends off. You could see this as a bonus, or you could say that the view is slightly not as intended in 4:3.
This will only end when both formats get a full complete fisheye distorted field of view that includes the entire perspective on the screen at once. Start your petitions early on this version!
Ehardergardens
Even the creator, Ken Levine, didn't like the ending of the game. Hopefully it's fixed in this version.

"The Boston team is the largest chunk of the BioShock team at the moment; many of them hard at work on some of the as-yet-unannounced components of the PS3 version."
This seriously sounds like sixaxis control.
Babylonian
Porting games late to PS3 - here to stay?
borktork
Key question for me: price?
Currently you can snag it on PC for $30 and 360 for $40. Even with extra content, I can see quite a few consumers looking at it questing a $20-$30 price difference. I know that was a sticking point with Oblivion for a couple of my friends.
dry-roasted-peanuts
Probably just Trophies and XMB support.
Metropolis
Honestly, a couple new plasmids is nice. But it won't make the game any better :P You end up using just a select handful of the dozens you get toward the end anyway.
belo
Eh, sounds like marketing bluster to me. I would imagine PS3 will get a few new plasmids and touch-ups.
Strangelove
Huh, I wonder if they are working with "Incog". Man, that would be a hell of a collaboration. Anyhow, I played this on 360 but never got a chance to finish it. I hope they do indeed add some new content, as that might be able to compel me to pick it up again.
-EDGE-
This is their chance to make any changes they didn't like about bioshock the first time. Not to mention to outdo themselves with the ps3 by bumping up resolution, visual effects in general.
karateka
@ChunkOFunk:
Most probably some Achievement type sort of thing I guess.
If they add in the option of letting you play the whole game as a Big Daddy then I'm sure some people would give it a second get go.
Add in a few tidbits to the ending or whatnot and it's set!
Anyone thinking whatever they add to the PS3 version will be released later as a DLC for the 360?
excaliburps
Ohhh new things..Hmmm what can they be...New enemies or maybe new thingies to kill freaks with :D
Or new weapons...And maybe a new feature in the very extreme cases
motogp
@polarenvy:
Yes. Both pics are the same.
So far, Bioshock was may absolute FAVORITE 360 game.
Amazon_Chris
Might be worth playing through again then. The 360 version was good, until the very end; the ending's just didn't do much for me at all.
iseptimus
"Unannounced components"?
A mandatory install, perhaps?
Foghorn6446
Let's hope they provide a decent ending for PS3 owners. The good/bad endings were a bloody awful way to end a fine game.
drivenstorm
Damn it, I thought the first one didn't post!
HALO-32
No more shaking dead bodies?
Day one purchase on 360, day one purchase on PS3.
HALO-32
Does this mean no more shaking dead bodies?
Either way this is one of my most favorite games of all time and this game is something everyone should experience!
HALO-32
Actually the ingame-physics in Bioshock wasn´t really relevant to the gameplay.

@Maverick128:
Yeah I also believe that it's Insomniac. I´guess it's part of their "Nocturnal Initiative".
Garo
so xbox 360 owners popularize the game, make it the hit that it is only to have the definitive and better version end up on the ps3?
Madness
just another game to look forward to, nothing bad can come of this and I can't wait for it, only idiot fanboys will tell you this is bad.
D-Sovereignty
"we've also got another development partner with some outstanding PS3-specific coding chops helping out with the project - we can't talk about what studio that is yet, but we look forward to revealing that in the future..."
Is Insomniac doing what we recommended and teaching devs how to actually utilize the PS3 as opposed to just complaining about it?
Maverick128
Wow - it looks... shinier?
Cathosach
The complaints about your last review post are haunting you, aren't they? Good to see you're balancing things out a bit, even though 8 of 10 is hardly a bad score.

@slomo788: It probably has more to do with not wanting to commit the resources needed to make a quality version for the PS3. EA had some experience w/making PS3 games at the point where they worked on Orange Box and would be able to reuse knowledge gained from investing in PS3 game development. We all know Gabe <3 PC. Since the 360 is very similar to PC architecture, they don't have to make a serious resource commitment to be able to make a 360 version of their games.
Spartan1308
@Spartan1308: Ah I knew I read about it. Yeah 360 owners are so lucky Valve doesn't disdain it. Apparently their fingers are so pure they can't code for little PS consoles. God I hate Valve...
slomo788
@slomo788: This might be what you were thinking about. [kotaku.com] There were some networking problems when it was released, but those were patched a couple weeks after it came out. I was busy w/HL2 and Portal for a while before I ever touched TF2 so I may never have seen these issues or maybe I just don't remember since the patch was so quick.
Spartan1308
@Spartan1308: Yeah TF2 is the perfect example of quality over quantity. Too perfect I'd say. But when I look at the whole package, I kinda feel bad asking for more.
slomo788
@slomo788: I will agree though that there could have been more to it. I like one map of TF2. 2 Fort. If they could have made more symmetrical maps that would work w/the CTF gametype, I'd have played much more. There can be lag if the host sucks, but that's true on PC also.
Spartan1308
@Actaeus: Isn't comparing Bioshock to Resistance like comparing Quake to Half Life?
slomo788
@Spartan1308: I'm pretty sure someone on this site reported it. Well might have been their connection or something. The PS3 version doesn't lag ALL the time either. It just does too many times for anyone's taste.
slomo788
My friend with the PS3 will finally understand why I didn't get that much into Resistance once he plays this.
Actaeus
@slomo788: Never had framerate issues w/TF2 on 360 and haven't heard of others having that problem either.
Spartan1308
@slomo788: Oh it's ok. I don't want to play it. I just remember reading about the problems. Given portals coverage I feel like I've already played it. ;D
But if I ever do get the urge it's nice to know it isn't all bad.
Aflack: Likes slushies
@TheCleaningGuy: I like it too, but I feel they could have put more in it. Everything I stated were things I didn't like about it, not reasons for me not to like it. It's a very enjoyable game, and the fact that it's not as deep as Warhawk and CoD4 makes it even more attractive because it's the best pick up and play title for me. Until GTA4 that is.
slomo788
@RPGJunky:
SIXAXIS is not discontinued, motion control has been implemented into the DS3 (if you look at the DS3 it says SIXAXIS right on the top underneath DUALSHOCK 3 in blue)
Anyway this is a must buy for me unless they totally screw it up. Played for about half an hour on my friends 360 and I loved it. That plastic surgeon is creepy btw.....
Weasel3689
@slomo788: I like TF2...
@Hatchetforce: Hot Damn!
@Topic: Truthfully, I can't wait for Bioshock PS3. I loved what I played on the 360, but I ended up shelling out for a PS3 anyway. What do you know! I hope it's out by September.
TheCleaningGuy
@slomo788: Great to see less hate on PS3 Orange Box.
The TF2 experience is lacking compared to the PC/360 versions, but it's still quite playable. I hop on from time to time and there's always plenty of people.
jiSh
@Alex_Mexico: That was patched. The 360 version has "true widescreen".

@iamcool388:
Posters at neogaf say it is legit. This is headline news.

@Aflack: Likes slushies: If you only have a PS3 and you want to play The Orange Box, don't hesitate. You probably won't even notice the 4 framerate issues" incidents throughout the whole HL2 and if you do, you'll forget it the second after because you'll be too busy opening skulls. Portal is a game everyone should play at least once and I can't believe it's not on PSN and XBL yet. However, don't expect too much from TF2. Bad framerate (on both consoles), no perks, a handful of maps, it's far from your CoD4/Warhawk/Halo3. But still, give it a try.
slomo788
@slomo788: No, dont get me wrong, I agree with you. If you look at my comment history, you'll see a pretty general disdain for reviews, and reviewers. But there are some games for whom I cant help getting hyped. Even if MGS4 got a 30/40, or 25, or w/e a bad score is, its still going to be a day 1 purchase for me, and no review can change that. I feel similarly about Little Big Planet and Resistance 2. For these games, its always reassuring to know that the games are being generally considered to adhere to high standards by reviewers, but they dont really make or break the game for me.
Since I'm pretty good with managing my expectations for games, I'm ok with getting on the hype train. Come on, knowing someone considered a game you really, REALLY want to be good worth a 100% score makes you feel nice, doesnt it? Thats all I am looking for, assurance that the game isnt crap haha.
iamcool388
On a more serious note I'm glad to see a dev not treating this port in the same fashion as the orange box. Strange, it's like they actually want people to have a good game to play.
@LBP, I'd say that's worth a submission. They've done tips for Wal-Marts $20 brawl and other stuff like that.
Aflack: Likes slushies
@iamcool388: I understand what you mean, but in the light of recent "events," I have come to believe that the best reviewer for each game is myself, and publicized reviews only help me to separate games into shitty, worth a try or excellent games. I am responsible for the subcategories (awesome, impressive, boring, waste of time...). Don't let reviews drag you too much into the hype.
@NoBullet: Well I think that's unfair. For what it does Nintendogs is extremely successful (ask all those little kids playing it) and in its context it is a good game. There are rock music simulators, war simulators, driving simulators so Nintendo found a way to touch a crowd that is into "caring dogs" simulators. Surprisingly or not it was actually a good game (unlike the abomination tha Petz from Ubisoft seems to be) and I suppose it deserves praise for trying something new (well not completely I know) and succeeding. Not your thing, not mine but still it's A thing. A very good thing apparently. I tried it and the dogs do look alive!
slomo788
@LittleBigPlaneteer: I just need to get it up on Ebay quickly. I don't think the price is a mistake b/c I found something similar but not as good on walmart.com. Actually I found it in a joystiq post being sold at walmart.com. They are giving away a $100 gift card to be used online only with each PS3 console purchased there. I see that deal is listed on slickdeals as well on Sunday. I think this is either Sony testing the waters to see if it would be worthwhile to drop the price significantly or vendors getting rid of this model before a new version is introduced.
Spartan1308
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Yeah it doesn't make sense at all. I don't see why Dell would take such a hit for Sony and I don't see why Sony would put such a deal on a Dell site instead of Best Buy or Wal Mart. Resistance and NBA 08 still sell for $60 I believe so the PS3 would only be 40% of its orginal price. Still, nice catch if it's real.
slomo788
Hmm... "Unannounced components," multiplayer perhaps?
Tenchuu
@slomo788: Famitsu gave Nintendogs a 40/40. They lost all credibility since then.
NoBullet
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
Sorry, can't guarantee it'll ship*
LittleBigPlaneteer
@Spartan1308:
Can't guarantee it'll sell, it's on the front page of slickdeals.net and there are thousands of people buying it. It's probably a price mistake so there's a good chance it'll be canceled. Still worth than chance though
LittleBigPlaneteer
@slomo788:
1. No. I expected 39+, so its all good.
2. No. But it would increase my hype some more. Which I didnt think was possible, but if this news is true, then whoa boy.
iamcool388
AWESOME BIOSHOCK ON ps3 :D
GregoriRasputin
Sounds interesting. I've never experienced Bioshock yet (Yes, stab me with eyes of pity and disgust), so I'm looking forward to it this time around.
Saint Anima
Those unannounced features are probably Home/Trophy support, sixaxis motion control support, and probably a small number of new plasmids besides what the 360 got as DLC. From what I've heard this game is great so the extra polish this game is going to get is good news. Wonder if we'll see anything that's really different from the 360 though.
_Bear
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Very nice. I've debated whether I would want to buy Resistance lately and this is a great way to get it for free. As a bonus, the PS3 should get a $50 to $70 profit on ebay.
Spartan1308
@RPGJunky:
The SIXAXIS Controller has been discontinued. But not the SIXAXIS technology.
Dualshock3 has a SIXAXIS technology in it if you don't know.
xCruciaLx
Technically, the components are no longer 'unannounced'. We should proceed to refer to them as 'announced yet unparticularised' components. :P
SimpleLife
Im not sure if this has been said before, but will the PS3 version of Bioshock will have true widescreen mode? Or crappy chopped off mode like the 360?
Alex_Mexico
Thanks 2k.
Make me buy the same game for two different systems. I love/hate you, so very much. Obvious, the hate, the love is because your game is good enough to buy twice.
Komrade_Kayce
@iamcool388: "Off Topic, I'm hearing MGS4 got a 40/40 from Famitsu... only the 8th game to get perfect score. Can anyone confirm this?"
1) Are you surprised?
2) Does it matter?
slomo788
@RPGJunky:
The Dual Shock 3 still has full use of the SIXAXIS controller's motion functions.
Archaotic
@RPGJunky: DS3 still has motion controls. It's a SIXAXIS with the DS2 rumble.
@amped602: According to Kotaku and Sony, they are not making it anymore.
slomo788
The fact that they're taking so much care for it is encouraging... and let's hope the "unannounced" component will be enough to justify the year it took to reach the PS3.
@ShirtGuyDom: Much agreed.
DragonSphere
Idk... I wouldnt be convinced its not a crappy port until i see it in motion. Things have gotten much better on the PS3, especially since last holiday season, but i still cant trust multiplatform games until they are built from the ground up for the PS3 and not ported.
Off Topic, I'm hearing MGS4 got a 40/40 from Famitsu... only the 8th game to get perfect score. Can anyone confirm this?
iamcool388
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Hot damn! Nice find bro!
slomo788
sixaxis is not discontinued
amped602
Mouse support? maybe? i hope
amped602
@Aflack: Likes slushies: I would doubt it, since the SIXAXIS has been discontinued. I wouldn't see a company building in support for a controller that didn't get much use anyway.
RPGJunky
Screenshots don't mean much to me, could be a slide show, could be smooth as butter...
Maximus9
I'll probably actually get this game if there is a substantial amount of content added that makes the late release warranted. We'll see I guess. I have a feeling that whatever IS added will make some of the gaming community disappointed.
-oG-ShAdY
Cell processer Power!!! oh i just installed my 250 HD on my PS3!!
Zonbi
I hate "timed exclusives."
ShirtGuyDom
Mmm. Sentence fragment, I think it's pretty clear that, on top of doing different physics stuff, the chances that they are talking about XMB or whatever it was support during a game are pretty high is what I meant to say.
ChunkOFunk
Sweet, I'm glad they're working hard on it. It looks like it won't be just a crappy port from the sound of it.
Also don't be to go off topic but this is a hot deal that won't last long. Dell has the 40GB PS3 with Resistance and NBA 08 for $280US: [accessories.us.dell.com]
(again I apologize, not sure if it's worth it to submit as tip)
LittleBigPlaneteer
Sounds like we could be getting an overall better experience.
Sparx
Uhh... Same screen shot twice there bash. >_> Now, because I know I'm not the only person who's going to notice that, I'll just go ahead and contribute to the discussion. So! I think it's pretty clear that, on top of doing different physics stuff, the chances that they are talking about XMB or whatever it was support during a game.
ChunkOFunk
Please add a good amount of new content so i can play through this great game again!
Mpalm.
what's the difference between the two pics?
