Pyros Blow In The New TF2 Update

The Pyro isn't just getting three new weapons in tomorrow's Team Fortress 2 update pack. His main weapon is getting an upgrade that will completely blow you away. The standard flamethrower will now come with a spiffy new alt-fire mode that shoots a blast of compressed air, blowing away both opponents and incoming projectiles, meaning soldiers are about to get a taste of their own medicine in a very bad way.
On top of the main weapon tweaks, the Pyro is also getting the Axtinguisher, which we've already covered, The Flare Gun, teased in yesterday's Meet the Sniper vid, which allows you to set opponents ablaze from afar, and The Backburner, a flamethrower for the sneakier firebugs out there. While it lacks the compressed air feature, The Backburner guarantees critical hits from behind while granting the Pyro 50 more health.

Why shouldn't they complain about it? The 360 version of TF2 should have worked. It should have been fun, it should have been easily updated. Same with the PS3 version, but Valve, Microsoft, and Sony all messed up in their own ways which screwed the console versions.

@Murdoc: I feel the same way. There are some people who get the ubersaw by themselves(without a dedicated server to achieve it), but I can't help but feel that most of the people who get it just jumped on a server and cheated the system to get it. I pretty sure this will happen again with the Pyro's new stuff now.

I'm actually really pleased that they decided to add the alt-fire to pyros, without making it an unlockable...I love the game, but there's no way I have the time required to grind for that sort of thing.

I'm already annoyed at the f@#$ head medics running around with their private server acquired ubersaws not healing anyone, I'm sure this will be no different.
Either upgrade all the classes at once or none at all.

@unangbangkay: Most of these achievements are cumulative, you could probably unlock two of the weapons just by playing regularly.

Are these all these things still locked to hitting achievements? If they are, how do they expect less active (read: less skilled) players to compete with the tweeners devoting their summers to finding the most ear-splitting curses to funnel through HLDJ when they "pwn" you?
Game and weapon balance is one thing, COMMUNITY balance is another.

@zaky: I actually gave up on the 360 one. The game was great but the people were, well, XBOX Live people. Too many people who don't know/care what they're doing, not enough team players, too many Scouts. The game is just thousands of times better on Steam. People there are used to many years of collective team-based action and it shows.

I love the Pyro. H ehad no love in TFC, and I was usualy the only one playing as him backin the days. Now, theres much lvoe goign around for the guy! I feel Vindicated!
Anyway, the flare gun is little more then the classic Flare-RPG that we used to have in TFC and I miss a lot, its a wonderful tool to pull mini-rocket jumps (It was possible to bypass the middle of Well, for example) and very good to annoy camped snipers. Ill surely be lookign forward to trying it out, to see hwo well it fares comapred to the classic one.

@September: I think that's one of the reasons the flare gun was introduced. All in all these changes will be for the better of the class and the game as a whole, I think.
I'm still waiting for the Engineer update. Does anyone know if Valve has announced who was next?

May i remind everyone who only a few weeks ago said that the new medic update would make the game unplayable because: "Ubers will be so easy to get, No one will heal because they are too busy bonesawing WAHHHHHHH" But now a month or 2 later the game is still incredibly balanced.

For a moment there I was afraid that the pyro achievements were going to be mind-numbingly difficult as the medic ones were. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. I could probably get most of these in just one weekend. Though there are a few that will most likely require a trip to a dedicated server to get done.

I'll have to play it to know for sure, but just from reading the changes it appears that pyro might be a little over-powered (at least until more of the other characters get their updates).
I wonder if the backburner will be as flakey as backstab is.

Great! I've recently been getting into the Pyro, but find it frustrating that most times I find myself sacrificing my character in order to flame 1-3 people (sometimes killing them in the process or getting an assist). The other problem with Pyro is that they are EXTREMELY limited to close range--the compression gun sounds like a neat idea without overpowering the Pyro too much; I doubt it'll send the opponent flying backward, but enough to buy the Pyro some time to escape.

It may be slightly off balance... but I'd rather that than waiting 2 years for them to release just 1 massive update. This is how Valve needs to release all of their content - otherwise it'd take them 10 years.

I think they're picking the worst classes they could possibly choose to upgrade. Seriously, the pyro is already overpowered. You can get many times the kills in the same amount of time as a pyro compared with other classes. And the medic? They took a defensive class and turned it into an offensive one...

As I has hoped, they included some achievements for burning sapper spies. Now I'm actually thrilled that people will be Pyro achievement-whoring, so people will actually start guarding my turrets (a principal Pyro responsibility). Bless you, Valve.

The compressed air blast sounds amazing; probably balanced with a recharge timer. I really hope I can do some "rocket" jumping with it. I will admit, the Backburner sounds a bit unbalanced, especially in the hands of a Pyro who was good before this fix.

The compressed air thing probably isn't going to change too much of the fight between soldiers and pyros, usually happens is that a pyro gets the jump on the soldier, sets him alight, and the solider immediately aims a rocket at the ground blowing them both up, even if the soldier doesn't take the easy route the fights generally are so close range due to the nature of the pyro, that a person is unlikely to react in time to stop a rocket. The Compressed air thing probably would be the most helpful screening the team from randomly spammed rockets, knocking scouts and demoman grenades away from a desperately held points and turrets.
The Backburner however, that I can see seriously helping out a pyro. A good pyro approaches an opponent from behind and with the backburner and the extra 50 health point he can become a proverbial toastmaster.

@Hickeroar:You're joking right? The pyro is totally underpowered right now, it loses out to the soldier in every situation. Even in close quarters, the soldier is more likely to gib himself then die by your flame.
And the medic is still a support class. The achievements helped medics get out of their shell by encouraging some risky yet rewarding play.

Some great achievements too. Killing an enemy with the Hadoken taunt is something to be encouraged. It'll never happen in play though.

as someone with 150 pyro hours, i can't hardly wait. Though now i'm totally torn over whether i want to use the backburner, as flanking and backburning are something i do regardless, and 50+ hp never hurts. Or if i want to shoo crit rawkets and demo grenades away. Decisions decisions.
It seems to m that out of all the achievements, 4 will require some bit of farming. Namely dance dance immolation (finding people taunting out in the open can be a pain as they usually only do it when they are safe) Got a light (spies usually don't stand still long enough to do the flicking the cig animation) omgtwfbbq (how the heck am i gonna kill someone with 1 point of damage from a taunt) and hotshot (reflecting a crit back is gonna be really hard due to the unpredictableness) Anything else will probably come with regular play.

These ones look a lot more reasonable and fun to go for than the ones for the Medic, but I'll still probably farm most of them because I'm more interested in the new weapons.
I hope Valve will start letting achievements work on their own at some point. They're not so fun when you have to go through them to get to new content.

I just blew my pants at the flamethrowing alt-fire/Backburner alternate weapon. I hope the airblast can remove already dropped stickies so that Pyro can at least try to mitigate damage from stickies to SG's. I mean, even another Demo can do it better right now.

@Flyingdebris: I think Dance, Dance, Immolation will be easier than you think. One word: Humiliation. During the post-victory time, the enemies taunt like crazy, because it's all they can do. And the crit rocket reflect? I think by the time you've gotten the others, you'll probably have stumbled across that one. It's a luck thing, I guess, so I can see a lot of people farming for it, but I'm not sure you'll need to.
Course, I farmed for a lot of my Medic achieves, but they were a lot harder.

I laugh at everyone who moans and bitches over every move away from status quo. Shaking things up keeps the game alive and evolves the gameplay. For me, and I'm sure for many others, this will mean that the matches and levels we've played thousands of times will suddenly be new and challenging.

all the taunting achievements are just going to encourage more achievement farmers. I'd rather them all be ones that are possible through normal play and a few of them some pretty amazing circumstances
what's good is that there are achievements specific to certain game modes (except Goldrush, sadly).

man, I totally hope that this speed-of-release remains constant... new weapons every four-to-six-weeks would be great, even if it does mean we won't see the last achievement pack for a year or so.
@Chozothebozo: the taunt can do damage to an enemy in front of it, I think. It's not much - like 1 or 2 points. Maybe this is one of the changes in the upcoming patch, though.
IMO this is effectively the achievement that will put the axtinguisher out of most people's hands forever - especially my hands! Unless valve fucks up and resets my achievements again and then unlocks them all for me to make up for it.

When the medic update came out I spent all night on an acheivement server. I actually saw the sun set, then rise rise again in a single TF2 session.

The Pyro is my favorite offensive class, so this is good news to me. I still dislike having them tied into achievements though-- people are more worried about those than they are about winning (which is vicariously going to punish anyone who isn't playing a pyro right now), which is not what this game is about. Seems a little broken to me.

Wow the backburner is ridiculous sounding, you get crits if your hitting the guy in the back plus extra hp. For people who are good at pyro now, the lack of air blast is nothing.

@incompleteunit: that's how it was for me when the medic pack came out, i got over it though. this will probably go by quicker, too, since most of these are easily achievable, unlike some of the medic ones.

I got a lot of the medic achievements via "achievementbox_b3", but only because a vast majority of the medic achievements gave me a headache just thinking about trying to get them on a regular server. They just didn't sound like fun, and why should that exclude me from getting the unlockables? I've taken care of the ridiculous ones, and I'm getting the rest as I play normal games.
That said, I don't think I'll be doing any kind of "cheating" on the achievements for the Pyro - as they actually sound like a lot of fun to try to get!

@unangbangkay: Actually Pyros get raped by pretty much everyone, especially soldiers and demos, even if they sneak up from behind. Thats why the stuff they gave them is to even the odds, otherwise pyros had no chances against those classes. If you don't think that then you haven't played the class enough or with good enough opponents.

i have all the medic weapons unlocked, but i prefer to keep using the original medigun instead of the kritzkrieg.

The achievements seem a lot more reasonable compared to the medic ones. Can see myself completing a fair amount of those without too much trouble.

I personally don't think that farming for achievements is such a bad thing. Actually, it helps to build community and teamwork in players. Some of the medic achievements require lots of participation from both teams even in achievement servers, such as Little Prick.
