Samba De Amigo Wii Maraca Controllers Appear
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:40 AM on June 28, 2008
In our previous encounters with Sega, reps have told us that they were "thinking" about maraca controllers for the Wii version of Samba de Amigo. They're "looking into it," they say. Well, if this box art from UK retailer HMV is right, they're pretty much a lock. Dug up by GoNintendo, the included maracas appear to be sleeve-style attachments, not dedicated controllers similar to the ones Sega shipped alongside the Dreamcast version of Samba.
HMV is currently listing the game and maraca combo for £34.99 (about $AU 72.91 USD). We've contacted Sega to find out more and have expressed our genuine excitement, hoping that they'll get back to us sooner rather than later.

Not surprised to see this for another system. Although the price is asking a bit much, even for a peripheral. Sleeves? Not a custom maraca? C'mon.. (sigh)
*sure enough a lot of Samba fanatics are looking at this in disbelief

"Seems like a gimmick to attach another $20 to the price "
You know, price translations aren't accurate for estimating a game's price in any other country, right?
FYI, most Wii games retail for that price in the UK, and thus it's not out of line.

It should be worth mentioning that £35 ($70) is pretty normal for a Wii game over here. So esentially the maracas are free. Sega seem to be following Mario Kart Wii (which also cost £35).

haha, damn sega cant win here.
before, those of us whod played or really wnated to play this one back on Dreamcast were bitching about the lack of maracas; now they deliver and people are upset about that, too.
Dont know that ill pony up $70 to give it a go but i sure hope someone i know does, this could be a lotta fun, and the biggest no-brainer for the wii since Bushido Blade.

Doh!
I bought fake maracas (the kind that don't make a noise) to play the PS2 version with. This game is the king of looking like a fool (and feeling good about it) behind close doors.

Assuming the the game is $50, $20 is kind of a lot for those maracas. I might buy the stand-alone version, though.

But wait..... if these slip right on the top of your remote, aren't they just going to fly off the moment you start shaking them? Unless they are pretty tight this is going to happen I lot, I would guess.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I've been so excited about this game since they announced it, but the one sore spot was the lack of Maracas.
This is a MUST BUY now. I don't care if they charged $100 for this set, I'd pick it up. Maracas are CRUCIAL to the Samba De Amigo experience.
I will be testifying to this game's greatness to everyone I know (provided it can accurately recreate the experience of the Dreamcast version).
HELL YES!!!

@Kiriphii: You know, looking at the photo of the box above, you might get a better idea of how they work, and how unless you're gripping the front of the wiimote with your fingertips, they aren't going to fly off.
As others have said, £34.99 is about the same as a normal game anyway, they won't be charging extra in the US either.

Who the hell are some of you people? $20 for the maracas is too much??
Back in the day, we paid $80 for a set of Dreamcast maracas and we LIKED it. We LOVED it. We'd do it again.
There are people still today paying $70 for a wireless plastic guitar.
$20 for a set of Wii maracas is a BARGAIN. I would hope that they come with beans inside that shake - that's really the whole point of a set of maracas, though. I'll be bitterly disappointed on principle if they aren't made that way. (I don't actually own a Wii, though this is a game that'd make me consider buying one.)

What's with the shape and color scheme? Why do they look different than Amigo's maracas, and how does it send signals to the sensor bar when it covers the emitters like that?
I'm dying to see how this plays!

For the record, does anyone know definitively what type of beans are used in authentic maracas?
I'm guessing pinto beans, but we need to know.
Maraca beans is serious business..

@badasscat: If there aren't beans inside, you know there will be "add your own beans" mods posted online, day one.
I was already trying to work it out in my head before I wrote your post. It looks like you'd drill into the maraca right inside the sleeve, where the wiimote sensor would be pointing.
Pour in beans, add homeade cap for freshness.

I don't know what people are on. 35£ isn't expensive at all. That's a regular price game around here. DIdn't Mario Kart Wii have the exact same price? Smells like favouritism around here.
Also, the maracas aren't obligatory. You can play the game with two regular wiimotes. If you don't believe it, search youtube. There was a video there where some guys were playing it in some convention.
