Somebody Wants To Make A Lost Planet Movie?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on June 18, 2008
Yesterday's episode of Evil Avatar's podcast featured as a special guest David "Voice of Solid Snake" Hayter. They got chatty, they talked Metal Gear, but something else they talked about was Hayter's other line of work: as a Hollywood writer. Over the year's, Hayters worked on movies like X-Men 1 & 2 and the Scorpion King, and he's even at work on the upcoming Watchmen flick as well. Seems he's also in discussions with both Capcom and Warner Bros to write a screenplay for a Lost Planet movie. Interesting choice, Capcom. Can't say I enjoyed the game too much, but the setting could work as a flick, especially if it's pitched at the Chronicles of Riddick end of the budget/market.

@TheNocturnalSun:
Just trash whatever the story of the game was. In fact, just as long as you have monster bugs, I can't see how you can go wrong.

David Hayter is a good screenwriter BUT that is not a good story to work with

@Superstar90: Wha? Are we talking about the same game? I mean, I enjoyed LP, but there wasn't really anything "amazing" about it. It was decent.
Of course, opinions vary.

I loved this game so much, it was incredible. It was one of the first games I got, and the graphics were like "OMG WTF". The explosion effects are gorgeous, and the gameplay is amazing.

Might want to swap that placement of the apostrophe.

@Captain Impulse: I guess this ( [www.imdb.com] ) would make "The Ice World" part 4, wouldn't it?:P

@Nickatiah: I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.

Why? The game was quite a generic experience and largely forgettable. Then again, someone picked up Bloodrayne at some point.

Bad idea, but this doesn't come as a surprise based on previous experience with game based movies.

Why not a movie about Dead Rising? Oh wait...

Aside from the repetition,uneven difficulty balancing and cheesy voice acting, I actually enjoyed Lost Planet. It had a new setting,great graphics, and fun gameplay. If handled properly, it could make for a fun summer action/ sci-fi movie. If David Hayter will be working on the screnplay, then that's a good start already, especially considering how good the first 2 X-Men movies were. Can't say the same about The Scorpion King, even if it did have good action.

If they do go ahead with it, they have to get Lee Byung-Hun, otherwise it's pointless. Hopefully his career won't shatter once GI Joe is released. Luckily, he has The Good, The Bad, The Weird coming out this summer.

I think Lost Planet would work out good as a movie

I think a movie would work for this game, they have a decent story they can use with some decent action. Theres no reason for this movie not to be good.

@arazzor:
I enjoyed it too. I picked it up for like 15 bucks used, and thought it was a pretty decent game, not stellar, but very enjoyable.

@Captain Impulse: I thought thought LP's multiplayer was fantastic. There were only four game modes, which limited replayability, but they did a great job balancing the VS suits (mechs) so that they weren't game-breakingly overpowering. Plus, the maps were really well tuned and took great advantage of the grappling hook's mechanic. Fugitive was a pretty swell multiplayer mode, too. A lot of people complained about having to trudge through snow, but I liked the realism, as it forced you to use the grappling hook.
That said, the single-player story needed help. I think there's enough there (colonizing a snow-covered world, Starship Troopers-style bugs, etc.) to make a decent action flick, but the game's story never got there.

Seriously, how many big-time CG movies are set in snowy landscapes?
Ice Age, Ice Age 2, Ice Age 3, Ice Age 4, Ice Age 5; and those seven or eight films about penguins . . .
. . . Snow is cheap, I guess! Lots of white = easy CG!

Oh, crap here we go again. But as long as it's not made by either Uwe Boll or the guy who directed the Doom movie, I'm cool with that. Peter Jackson would be an ideal producer/director, while Paul Greengrass should be given a restraining order from the camera, unless he promises to use a Steadicam.

If Hayter's writing the screenplay, then count me in.
