And now that my 3rd died I just don't want to deal with MS. I rather buy one from Best buy and and if anything happensI can get a replacement the same day. I just don't wan't anymore runaround. But if my 4th 360 breaks on me then I'm done with MS this generation. Or at least until the price drops to 100 each.

@Netnavi: Haha, it's funny because the "360 days" rings true for me as well. My first 360 died 358 days after I bought it. If history repeats itself, then my refurbished 360 should die this week. I'm surprised it hasn't died already, I rarely played my 360 for the first year (50 hours, at most) but I've put at least 600 hours into the thing since I got it back.

Here's to hoping that MGS4 will feature trophies, I'm playing that game religiously and I'd love to have a superficial reward to go along with it. Make it happen.

@Netnavi: Normally, the sticker has the manufacturing date, team and Lot number! The flap you saw, if you open it, reveals the part the console where the S/N is located! I had to go through all that to find a Falcon model because I didn't want to take a risk with older models! 4 months old, average of 2hours per day of game time and working fine!

@slomo788: I know what you mean. When I went on my 3rd 360 I babyied it. Put it near a window, had the AC blasting, elevated off of the shelf and evrything else everyone said on the net.

I thought I was in the clear but then one day on the dashboard looking for some XBLA games the screen froze with the checkerboard pattern. Just like every other 360 that died on me.

I really believe the graphics chip is a piece of crap and all of them will eventually burn out.

My friend has had his for a year and a half and nothing has happened to it but one red ring. He put it sideways and has a pelican fan underneath. No problems. But of all my friends he's the only one that has the golden 360. But I'm sure his will break eventually.

I have all systems and the 360 has the games, but I may start just buying games for 360 instead. at least the system will turn on when I want it to. And It will last long after the generation is over (at least I hope)

You never initiate or accept a chat invite, send or receive game invites, never augment your online status, manage your downloads, enable custom soundtracks, create a save file, or back out to the dashboard while playing a game?

You've never done any of those things? Then the PS3's perfect for you as-is, because as of right now, PS3 owners can't do most of those things without having to back out to the system menu first.

One of the big problems with the Gaming industry is the very limited number of ways that we can monetize titles. Movies have box office gross, PPV, premium channels, rentals, DVD sales, etc. Video games have box sales, that's it.

Trophies offer a way for a developer to incentivize the purchase of their backlog PS3 titles (granted, there aren't a ton of them at this point.) and increase their box sales. What? You skipped on MegaShooter2? JRPG SeizureFest came out before you bought your system and you didn't get caught in the buzz? Well, now it's only 19.99 AND you get trophies! It's not much, but it can be enough.

@TheIrishNinja: Well the thing being announced so long ago and it wasn't nearly ready to ship. That's why you're seeing the horrendous delays and ongoing betas. Since then Sony chose not to announce stuff like that until it's basically ready to go out the door. They could have told us 2.4 would come 6 months ago and feature all this, but there wouldn't be a working version of it, so it's all hype for nothing. I like their new strategy.

And just so everyone realizes, there would be no way to patch in trophies without access to the game's source code since there's no way for the system to externally know things like if the player make it through the level without getting hit.

I'm glad you bring up GTA, because that series has had its fair share of "achivements" in order to get 100% completion of the game. Whether it's to do an insane stunt a number of times, or how many people you kill on a rampage. These types of "extras" give extra value and playtime to a game. Not every game as much to do as a GTA game so for the most part, extending other games is a good thing.

There's always going to be people out there that take it too far. "Achievement Whores" seem to have less fun than the typical gamer who sees achievements as an afterthought to the game, rather than part of the original run through.

@people who just own a PS3: the online interface for the 360 is fucking amazing, and I'm sorry you are missing it. Turning on my PS3 to play online games is quite often an exercise in frustration after I got used to all the little things XBL got right.

What is the actual point of achievements/trophies? Must be i am getting to old or something.....you actually see what you achieve while playing the game. I just find the sound, the blinking up of a message on the screen annoying as i like to get immersed in a game and this detracts from that. Example GTA 4 had an achievement for finishing the game in under 30hrs!!!! I bet there were idiots rushing to complete the game, skipping cutscene etc just to get a few imaginary points that do nothing. I can understand to prolong the life of a game putting extras in like achievements/trophies, but me I couldn't care less as long as developers make good games.

Now if the points actually meant you could win stuff, that would be a different thing entirely! hint! hint! sony

@PapaBear434: Sony changed things around since the HOME "disaster". They won't announce new features in firmwares and the like until they are 100% to be ready and applicable. That means we're looking at an incremental upgrade before the 2.4 which will probably add certain support and then it's rolling in a few days later. Things like this are common.

You should rest assured that Sony only announced this now because it's very close and actually READY, and not something promised for the future. :)

@karasu is my homeboy: I agree. i was never that interested in Achievements until I played (ironically a PS3 exclusive) Uncharted. All the tasks made me play it over and over and over again. It helped that it was one of the best games to come out last year.

My question to Sony is:

When "Trophies" finally are implemented, does that mean that the saves you have will be updated and that all of the trophies on the games that you have played will be shown? Or does it start from scratch.

Actually, I have another completely serious question: What's the use of in-game XMB?
I played a lot of Xbox 360, and i don't recall using it a single time. Is it to exchange messages while playing? I mean, i am sure it's nice for people who want to do that, but I don't understand why it seems every single person and his mom want it so badly.
Trophies are nice, though. I kind of hope they can be turned off for some games (i don't want to obsess about completion in games which take already too much of my time..)

Seeing that like bubble pop up is rewarding, and it adds replay value to games that you wouldn't have replayed before. Sure, I could be done with X game and never play it again, but checking the achievement list and seeing that if I beat level 10 on hardest difficulty without getting hit and only using a pistol makes me want to, well, beat level 10 on hardest difficulty without getting hit and only using a pistol. It's a fun challenge to take up, and you're rewarded for it.

I welcome anything that gives more replay value to my games.

It's not months away, actually. Word down the guinea pig grapevine say that 2.36 will hit this week, with 2.4 trailing behind it around the end of the month. 2.4 has apparently gone to the testers, which is one of the final processes before it hits the network. I'm frankly just glad to see that I will be able to message my friends from MGO or GTAIV. Good stuff.

Maybe we should wait to see what Sony considers "ingame XMB" to actually be before celebrating. After all, they have different definitions for things like "full backwards compatability" and "hardware scaling" than a normal person. Some of us still remember when Sony announced support for "hardware scaling" and celebrated. Over a year later and Sony's own titles like Resistance Fall of Man still have to run at 480p if your HD set only supports 1080i input.

This is very nice. It's actually one of the small reasons I have stayed away from buying a Ps3 at this point. As these little details are big items for me and my love of Xbox Live.

While they won't make me purchase the console yet, I'm gonna wait for a price drop, they do add another nice little reason to get one down the road.

Sounds advantage marketing wise to me. So it is win/win. Win for the hardcore, win for the non hardcore to have features that improve and not take away functionality, whether they use it or not ... and win for Sony to market their machine as having the same features as their competitor for free.

@henri1kk: good to know, thanks. I have about 3 HDDs from the last systems I have had and all my info is on it too. I assume the power consumption is a tell of how big the chips are inside. I feel better knowing that there is some way of knowing what model you are getting. I really hope that this will be my last purchase of this system and it lasts. at least as long as PS1 (that too is on it's last leg, but I could always fix the lens and drive)

@Netnavi: Arcade models are the same hardware but I do agree that the HDD is necessary! Try to get a console that has a manufacturing date close to the end of '07 (Sep, Oct, Nov, etc) and look in the sticker to see if it says 175W! If it does, it's a Falcon model, if it says 203W it may be a Falcon but do not take any chances! Go for the 175W!

For those of you guys trashing achievements... its clear you haven't played the xbox...Even if you didn't care about it, there is no reason to be jaded about it. It really does add replay value to games, or challenges you to do things you wouldn't ordinarily do. You know all those people who love to run through Euro Extreme on metal gear... Imagine having something to show you did that, and when your friends look at it you have bragging rights...

So trophies coupled with home had me excited.. It would really be cool to get a really hard achievement.. And actually have something cool to present to your friends and such...

SO for all you angry psfanboys out there, just wait till you get it.. You will love it. Your opinoins will change from useless and stupid, to equal footing with the xbox and actually quite fun.

Having all 3 systems is the way to go.. Nothing to cry about

I could never understand PS3 owners who are unable to grasp the fact that a game with achievements, which do vary from lame (complete the game, beat level X), to fun (perform a wheelie for 500m in GTAIV) to the challenging ( I don't know I don't own a 360, I only saw my friend trying to get the wheelie achievment) add value, no matter how small. Contrast this with the PS3 version that has a 5-10 minute install or longer load times, and no achievements. If you feel that increasing the replay value of your game is pointless, then you can turn off the notices apparently. Let's put it this way, if I had to choose between a game with a value of 100 and a value of 100+1, then how could I ever settle for the 100? This assumes of course that the games came out at relatively the same time. Delayed exclusivity tends to add value to the later release. I'm sick of forums such as this that "could never understand" how something could become popular when they choose to attack it. It makes you seem like you're looking down on people.

I can't see how anyone can see this as bad news (it may make a few anxious though) for both Sony and PS3 owners. In game console functions should definitely be a requirement for these multi-connected, multi-cored beasts we call consoles today. People have given Sony a lot of shit about this in the past and its good to see if enough people bitch about something long enough, and you see your competition benefiting from said thing, it's probably a good thing to emulate. So I hope people enjoy this when it comes out on the PS3.

Xbox 360 owners, we can be happy knowing that this will light a fire under Microsoft's collective ass. Actually, I'm pretty sure it already has. It's probably no coincidence that we missed a spring update and that everyone at 360 internal is working on some amazing back-end stuff (listen to the dodgy comments from "E" on Major Nelson's Podcast and you'll get the idea). Couple that with the public acknowledgment of issues and area's desiring improvements and you know XBL is prepping for major change. Only competitors was successful ans Nintendo is and Sony is becoming will make this happen.

A note to people who love to act like this is their achievement that Sony finally has part of something they should have launched with: Stop it... you look pitiful. First, you did nothing to roll this out. It's one thing for SCOE to come out and say "We did it!" and it's another for you to come out and say "We did it!" Secondly, don't brag about finally getting something because you're not coming out ahead of people who already had this. It sounds retarded. Now there are also people who think that this means nothing. It means many things and most of it is good for consumers but it's all good for PS3 owners so stop trying to minimize it. If you feel jealous then just save and get a PS3 or sell the system you own and get a PS3 but don't act like it means nothing.

I guess my last message is to my fellow fanboys brothers from three different mothers (yes, you PS3, Wii, and 360). Like Owen said, "This is why we can't have good things!" I can understand when the news is negative and we fan up the eternal flames of the console war in an attempt to cut each others hearts open but seriously, why must all good news that's console specific or even game specific be derailed by needless arguments. We should be building bridges of happiness but instead, we wait for users to build it then we go hide under it and fling poop and fire until the bridges are burnt. Come on guys! 360 owners: I don't own a PS3 and have no desire to but that doesn't mean every good thing that happens to them has to be minimized. After seeing their 2007 and what Sony's done to fix it, the company has worked its ass off and the owners should be allowed to celebrate in peace. PS3 owners: Don't go, as Jafee put it, shitting on my house.

We are all a passionate and sensitive bunch and we share too much in common to always be on the defensive against each other. This probably comes from the competitive aspects of being a gamer but surely we all have enough overlap to able to get along... I know. Some of the people I follow hear are hardcore PS3 fanboys and I love their viewpoints, if for nothing else, a different perspective. They follow me as well and we can actually talk without insulting each other's perceived sexuality or things of that nature.

I guess the final thing I have to say is that I don't think I'm being sanctimonious or hypocritical but you might feel I am. I don't know what to say to that, you may be right because after all you are on the outside looking in and I'm on the inside and see the world to fanboy-troll colored glasses. All I ask is that if any of this gets through to you and you've read this far, that you'll at least think about some of the points I've made whether you like them or not.

Trophies, merely a cosmetic addition to me. Then again, none of my friends have PS3's so I have nobody to brag achievements to. As for In-Game XMB, I'm one of those who are skeptical as to what that will let us do. Hopefully it gives us unrestricted messaging and invites in-game, and allowing a sort of "Custom Soundtrack" thing would be cool, but not used very much by me. Also, I'm of the sort that wonders what else we could potentially get out of the system that's curing diseases, and we're only wanting music and messaging during games? Anyone have anything more creative to wish for?

i'll be cool to have the PS3 close to par with the 360. i'll be interested to see how the trophies get implemented and if they will work backwards with games that are already out or if they will go from the update on. i just got burnout paradise and the way they do the awards in the game are perfect for the trophy system. same with uncharted. (which i am going through again while i'm waiting for my copy of MGS4 to come later today)

now that i'm getting messages on PSN, the in game XMB deal will be a cool way for me the forget about replying back to people while i'm in the middle of playing warhawk. no offense to anyone messaging me, i just never think to check my messages on PSN.
