Spore Creature Creator Trial Available Today
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on June 18, 2008
I've managed to avoid the Creature Creator for the most part myself, but this launch trailer sucked me in as soon as I heard the bizarre little critters making cute squeaking noises. I am a complete sucker for cute squeaking noises, as my dating history is sure to prove.
SPORE CREATURE CREATOR AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE TODAY
Spore Creature Creator Kicks off the Countdown to the Release of Spore this September
Redwood City, CA - June 17, 2008 - Prepare to test the limits of your imagination! Maxis, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, today released the Spore™ Creature Creator, an introduction to the highly-anticipated and groundbreaking video game, Spore™ which will ship worldwide this September.
Available today for both PC and Mac, the Spore Creature Creator is a stand-alone product and creativity toy box where players create their own unique creatures, bring them to life with entertaining animations, and share them online with friends around the world. The full version of the Spore Creature Creator will be available for $9.99 at retail stores or by visiting www.spore.com. A free trial version of the Spore Creature Creator is also available today at www.spore.com. The trial version features 25% of the creature-making parts from Spore and lets players shape, paint and play with their custom-created creatures. Creatures made in the Spore Creature Creator can also be imported into the full Spore game, allowing players to populate their own galaxies when the game ships worldwide later this year.
The Spore Creature Creator lets players create their own creatures, take them on a test drive, snap pictures, and make movies of them. Sharing pictures or videos with friends is as easy as the click of a button. Players can also share their creations with others by uploading to the Sporepedia™ at www.Spore.com. The Sporepedia is an extraordinarily vast online destination where people worldwide can search for and share Spore creations, comment on other player's designs, check out celebrity creature creations and much more.
"Today is the day we begin to see Spore come to life," said Executive Producer and General Manager of Maxis, Lucy Bradshaw. "We're excited to see what players will do with the powerful and intuitive creativity tools we've put into the Spore Creature Creator. Our team will be excitedly keeping an eye on the Sporepedia to check out creations made by players from around the world."
The ability to upload players' creations to YouTube™ has also been integrated into the Spore Creature Creator. Players can import and upload video of their creatures' moves directly to YouTube with only two clicks within the game. Spore will have its own YouTube Channel where all videos of users' creations uploaded from the game will be showcased for the YouTube community to watch, share, rate and comment on. Check it out at http://youtube.com/spore.
Love your creature so much you want the entire world to see? Post it to your blog for people to check out, even create an avatar for your favourite social networking site. And if you want to see your creature come to life in the real world - now you can! Visit www.zazzle.com/sporestore to upload your creature and turn it into a custom coffee mug, t-shirt, magnet, stickers and more! Zazzle allows you to instantly create cool products for your creature so you can take your creature on the go, wherever you go!
Spore, the highly-anticipated game from the creators of The Sims™, gives players their own personal universe in a box. Create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt entire worlds and explore a universe filled with creations made by other gamers. Spore gives players a wealth of creative tools to customise nearly every aspect of their universe: creatures, vehicles, buildings, and even UFOs.
The Spore Creature Creator is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB. The downloadable demo version is free. The complete version has an MSRP of $9.99 in North America. Spore ships for the PC, Mac, Nintendo DS™ and mobile phones on September 5, 2008 in Europe and September 7, 2008 in North America and Asia. Visit www.Spore.com to download a free version of the Spore Creature Creator, sign up for the Spore newsletter or check out all-new screenshots and videos from the game.

I'm still having trouble getting it in AU. Apparently it's only available to US and Canadian citizens. You can trust EA to fuck up new releases.

Yeah, frickin' annoying. It's available from the UK direct2drive site too, but I can't buy it from there either.
Bloody EA. Do they WANT us to pirate their software?

I heard somewhere about a 20 June release date. Not sure though, but if it's still only available to US and Canadian citizens, EA can suck my balls.

The only thing worse than a "1st" post is a bunch of people criticizing the person making the "1st" post. Let the modgods do their jobs, and you commenters go on sticking to commenting. It's easy enough to skip through a single crap post, but I'd rather not have to wade through a bunch of criticism too to get to the on-topic stuff.
Also, considering the amount of time Spore has been in development, this isn't too bad.

@pwn-master3001: Distend the perambulator. After you've distended it by exactly 17 kilometers, detach the phalanges piece by piece. Weld them back together, and frizz the vent core. Repeal the top isosceles, but DO NOT repeal the camshaft. Put on the best gloves you have, and dismount every ventricle.
You should now see eight (8) paramecia. Find the one that's fully unkempt, and nip up the Haversham. Be careful; if you nip up the wrong Haversham, it could result in electrocution.

They don't tell you that if you have a Mac it only runs with Leopard. That's kind of important when you're still running Tiger. I agree some what with the people who worry it'll get old quick. One of the things I noticed in the demo was that I could create a critter that shouldn't even be able to stand, but it does. Not only that, but it pivots from the center of the character model instead of where the foot was. This lead to some unnatural looking movement and kind of took me out of the moment.

Also, I think you can control what you download from the Sporeapedia as well, so if you don't want all the wang monsters in your game, I think you can control that.

Currently, this isn't out on the EU EA store. Apparently, in crazy Europaland, when someone says something will be released on a June 17th, they mean June 17th *After 10PM*. It's possible to buy it on something like Direct2Drive, but EA don't refund any purchases made by credit card unless you cancel the order on the same day that you made it.

Seriously this is basically alot like doodling. Doodling can be fun, but it has a finite limit on fun. Seriously Spore has been hyped for quite awhile and writers go ga-ga for it but what the hell is the actual gameplay? We havent seen alot of that. No one seems to realize that's not like going to Windows Update, it's like buying Vista, even if they're both OS "10."
Then, when Apple says "this is our new version, buy it!" everyone is expected to rush out on day 1 and pay for it regardless of whether they need it - they do need it because that moment the previous version of the OS is frozen in time with no new apps.

I've tried to run it three times, and three times my computer restarted itself. All at the same point in Spore's loading, I might add!
It's great that the intro sequence naming EA and Maxis and all those fun folks can't be skipped, and that after it finishes my computer restarts. On top of that, Windows claims it has recovered from a serious error.
It would be most great if this problem progogated to the final retail version. Not out of spite to those who can play with it just fine now, but out of hope that EA will have to spend money replacing thousands of copies later.
The trailer makes me sad I can't play with this demo. :(

important question here... for those who had downloaded the "advanced" copy of the demo (I mean the demo that came out last week =P) will I have to remove it along with all my spore data for the real demo and the actual game when I get it?? I really dont want to lose my stuff, but I think it would go away if I uninstalled it =//

Tried it on two different Vista machines and it will not run. Keeps saying windows has encountered an error.

Oh, and has anyone tried spinning the galaxy from the main menu yet, just to see Will Wright's face flying towards your screen? That shit is creepy... XD

@Halaster:
It doesn't specify if it comes with the full game, but they've said that if you buy the Creature Creator for $10, then you'll get $5 off the full game, if you get it from Amazon or Target.

@Aye Mak Sicur:
HA HA HA~!
No, not really. I'm actually grumbling at what's more a Mac culture issue. It's bizarre to a mainly PC fan like myself, but every time a new major OS version comes out, everything older dies hard and instantly because the new versions of anything will require you to buy the new OS.
It's still OS 10, just 10.5 instead of 10.4. They bundle a bunch of features and then charge for it, but it's really more like a Windows "Plus!" pack that renders all systems obsolete on its release date.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi:
I agree. Then, there's a freaky spider in the installer pics, so maybe the full game has less cuddly options. I want to make something along the lines of Critters or Aliens... and then see how intelligent I can make them. Small, fast, and maybe an eye in the back of their heads.
It's going to be fun anyway!

@Auhim: uninstall the EA Download manager by going to Add/Remove programs (if you chose to install it). It exits the game for some reason.

Does anyone know if this is included with the full game ?
Since playing the full game without access to the creature creator seems... well not possible.
If it IS included with the full game, are we going to be able to get the game for $40 if we purchase this ahead of time, or are we essentially going to be charged twice for the exact same software ?

Okay so, From the looks of it. On WIndows Vista RUnning in Compatability mode, WIndows Xp, After installing the latest hotFixes, Goin through a Bunch of CTRL+Alt+DEL's Then hitting Cancel a few times... It stops freezing... I guess the freezing has something to do with the program Caching On your system... -_- and this needs to be fixed. ALl in all It's FUn [After it stops freezing]! Then again I like Creating new things, and Playing God.

How interesting. I downloaded and installed it on my PC only to find that it won't get past the splash screen. And yes, my PC has the specs to handle the game.

Does any one know if I can enter my "unlcok code" into the trial version? Or do I need to download the complete version?
I'm guessing the latter since otherwise someone would have probably cracked the trial already. I'm downloading the CC again now from the link on my pre-order invoice, but in my D/L manager its showing the same name as the trial version: "SPORE(tm) Creature Creator"...

I eventually made it onto the EA Store page, downloaded their stupid downloader, then downloaded the actual Creature Creator. After the 20 minute download, the freaking CC isn't in the list of games. i can't get back onto the store because the website is still collapsing.

i showed up at my local Gamestop to pick up my preordered copy, hoping the shipments had come in to the east coast, but to no avail
the demo has been more than enough to keep me happy though
(also, i stopped waiting for the demo to hit the sight last night, somewhere around 3:00-4:00am)

I was actually the first person to post "First Post" in reply to a BBS posting in 1988.
Seriously though, I do remember it being a big deal on the now-defunct "ZZZ News" back in 1999 or so, when people would actually get congratulated for first post, before the dark times, before the eyeroll smilies...

I just tried the trial and its not working on my vista machine. Says I don't have a compatable version of DirectX and to go download a new one. The site it guides me too is the download for DirectX 9.0C and vista is version 10.

I'm amazed people are complaining about paying for this. Some of the most outstanding video game technology (dynamic animations etc.. ) and several hours of fun for £5 ($10), which you will get back if you go on to buy the full game. This game must have cost several tens of millions to make, Games companies are businesses not a charities.

So, I installed the trial last night. No problems. I go to run it, and you have to register an account. Ok, makes sense. Then it pops the message that you can only play one time before confirming your account in email. 7 hours later, I've yet to receive that email. I hope this isn't foreshadowing. I'll have the full version by tonight, this better not be an issue.

This is some supreme suckage. I was able to use the demo editor, but not the one I just purchased for $10 today. WTF?! I get the same error as a lot of other people - it quits after the initial name EA/Maxis sequence.

@-itis: Same here. Three and a half hours after the game has been made available and I've purchased it on their online store, it still hasn't shown up in my download manager. I've submitted a technical support ticket for it, but since we're having similar issues it may be a generalized problem. First they delay the sale by 24 hours, and now we find out it's for nothing because the product is still not ready on their system.
