Sporepedia A Million Strong And Growing
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on June 25, 2008
You want proof that people have far too much free time? Kotakuite Steven dropped us a line this morning to point out that the Sporepdia at Spore.com has just surpassed the one million creature mark merely a week after the release of the Creature Creator. Big numbers, even though we've technically slowed down since last week's 350,000 milestone.
At this rate, if my calculations prove correct, we should be completely and utterly sick of seeing Spore creatures by the time the full game drops in September.

@xIvSlowDeath420: you're a bit unclear on the concept there, bunky.

Unless somebody attempts to make a "Crecentesaurus", nah.

Hmm...almost 300 results for "Bowser" Some of which look fairly good.
Some of which are also "clones", which leaves me thinking there's more than one Clebri-Miiesque "Spor Recipebook" site out there.

Just imagine how many undocumented penii(and assorted body part) monsters there are if there's already a million normal ones.

@Byakko: Can't go wrong with that quote. It just serves so many purposes. It's probably been twisted to more evil ends than the Bible.

Already, the server for the Sporepedia looks to be at the very brink of cracking.
One day it's just going to bust and...Will Wright will have felt a great disturbance, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

@xIvSlowDeath420: Huh? It's not about finding something you like. It's about creating what you want. Do you understand what this whole Spore thing is all about?

1,000,000 creatures, and nearly half of them genital-free.

I find the idea that so much free time exists in the world rather comforting. How it is spent on the other hand...

One of my theories is that they're releasing this thing early so everyone can get the penis out of their system before the actual game hits. So to speak.

This is just dumb, they need to reel this in somehow.I mean its great on paper thats theres so many but trying to find something you like,nm something thats actually any good in that mess just isn't worth the trouble.

Over One Million and not a single Brian Crecente creature? For shame Kotaku, for shame.

Especially interesting since really, the editor is attracting those who have been waiting for the game...not the market in general. If they can just deliver on gameplay, this will make the sims sales numbers look like Haze.

By the time the game comes out, there will be enough species for... TWO GALAXIES! (8 billion?)

Everything has been done. I'm creatively stumped.
Deep Crow from PA is cool. There are dozens of attempts, too.
@SigmundTheSeaMonster: Incidentally, no Fruit Fucker, though.

@Malthius:
Yeah, you know the other day when Kotaku reported that there were over 100,000 creatures in the Sporepedia, I did a double take, because I could have sworn that number was more like 300,000+ the last time I checked it. Then I remembered they deleted all the penis monsters.

@greyhoundbus: If we're talking how many in the Sporepedia: 0
If we're talking total, lurking on YouTube and people's personal computers, probably about 50%

I have been blown away from some of the creative spore creatures, but this game will become legendary when the single-cell evolution concept is available.
I learned a couple of days ago that apparently DNA from past generations is still present in out own DNA, but that certain elements are turned off. Scientists are now finding out ways to turn ON elements from past generations, and are developing embryos that possess attributes no longer present in modern day creatures. Because of the random nature of the DNA (it is extremely complex, and haphazard) it is beginning to look like "Intelligent Design" is about to blown out of the water. Let's hope that Spore can recapture some of excitement of survival of the fittest and the natural selection process.

@xIvSlowDeath420: Well the spore ipedia exists so that you can add other peoples creations to your galaxy to see how they co exist, which one ends up dominant etc etc or did all that talk from a few months ago end up being just that?

@xIvSlowDeath420: No the sporepedia exists just to view people's creations and add them to your creature creator to mess abotu with. Whe the game comes out it judges how you are playing, if you have a weak or strong creature, and to give you a challenge, downloads a creature from this database at random for you to survive against. Its random basically, you don't choose the other creatures to my knowledge.

I knew there would be an online component to Spore, but I thought it would be the usual finnicky deal where you have to grab little files from a 10-folder-deep location and upload them to a forum for only the hard core to see.
What actually happened is just insane, a million creatures in a week! That's just the creatures, there'll be vehicles, buildings and planets to design in the full version, all getting uploaded and rated and tested by millions of users 24 hours a day.
This is seriously going to be a new type of game, it's like Doom .wad files all over again...

Seriously...somewhere inside W.W.'s head...I think he thinks he's accelerating the singularity (& he might be right).
Kevin Kelly would be proud.
...I'm annoyed that you all can't find my creatures to download & admire & base your whole SPORE existence around...but I guess everything can't be about me.
