'Strategic Dismemberment' in Dead Space
Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on June 23, 2008
"Strategic dismemberment?" Counterproductive headshots? And bodyshots? I'm ready to call Dead Space the No. 1 and No. 2 game of its genre* -- because it looks like it'll both piss me off and scare the shit out of me. It also looks like you get to relearn all you know about third-person shooting just for one title.
(*Note to EA, that's not a testimonial. Don't lift it out of context pls. Kthx.)

@JustJake: Actually, I doubt this will have much in common with BioShock at all. It appears to lack subtlety entirely, and story-- well, it doesn't seem to be this game's strong suit. Gory, frightening gameplay, though? Looks like this game should deliver that. And how. This trailer looks pretty cool. Definitely piqued my interest a bit.
Don't let me down, EA.

This game is really growing on me. At first I wasn't too keen on it, because everything was told with a lot of show, so it was hard to figure out whether or not there was actually any substance as to what they put out there. Now it's been plenty of months (or has it already been a year?) since I first heard about it, and now I can't wait for it to be released!
I'm always worried about games being marketed as "the creepiest game ever" or "best gaming experience ever" - especially when these words come from the developers themselves. I mean, just look at what happened to Alone in the Dark, right?
I think it looks and sounds as if they're doing the right thing by marketing the game through one idea being wanting to scare the crap out of the gamer. Plus, the developer videos have been rather convincing - especially when they taked about the sound design. But, I don't like the idea of them talking too much about the "Strategic Dismemberment", because as mentioned above by Heliophage this will run dry in matter of hours of gaming, unless of course they've got some tricks up their sleeves. Battlefield: Bad Company was marketed by using the destructive enviroments as being the interesting part of this game, because it could serve some interesting battles, where the gamer blows a wall to pieces and then runs through it and finds the bad guy. This is a fun element, yes, but for how long? I played the demo and after a couple of minutes I just started blowing up every single house I came across, so the strategics in blowing up walls was put in the drawer and instead I just played the game "Commando-style". I'm seeing the same thing happening to Dead Space. Once you've destroyed enough Necromorph you might just end up blowing them to bits as soon as they near you. They could save this from happening by giving you a limited ammo supply though...
I just hope there's something extra to it :)

*After blowing off all of the arms and legs of the monsters on his spaceship the space marine starts hearing clawing noises around him... He checks his ammo and realizes he's empty, no bother he says to himself all of the monsters can pull them selfs forward without arms or legs. Once the emergency lights turn on that seemed to have deactived during his encounter they reveille hundreds of monster dragging themselfs across the ship towards him with their mouths. without ammo he is forced to punch hundreds of monsters repeatedly in the face until they die, because after having all of their limbs removed they can still function.

@Heliophage: Agreed, sound like your just gonna have to remove every limb and apendage of every enemy just before you can finsh them off. Rinse and repeat. Seems like its an artificial way of making the enemy a bit more difficult. Yes, you should be able to remove limbs strategically, but you should also be able to load a whole bunch of lead into the centre of their nervous system to stop them dead in their living-dead tracks.

But "telekinesis gun"?
Telekinesis is moving things with your mind, so does that mean you have a telekinetic brain powering the gun?
That sounds kinda cool, actually.

this could look really frustrating but scary at the same time. if the weak spot is randomly generated, it could lead to lots of frustration as we would face a continually shambling or growing horde. however, this could also lead to a intense retreat or other desperate manuevers. im going to watch to see how this game turns out.

Hoping the controls are good, it sounds great at what they trying to do. But, all of that can go down the drain if they screw up the controls of make it take too long to kill something. Also, having low ammo is never good in any shooter, that's a bad idea imho.
But, it does look good from what is displayed.

@Krondonian: You just described Doom 3, and the AI has got to be better than Doom 3. Because of the similarities, during development EA had to have looked at Doom 3 and the response to the game and made sure Dead Space didn't suck. At least not in the same ways.
I'm really looking forward to this title. For those who haven't seen a lot on it, there's tons of media out there.
On the topic of dismemberment and other stuffs, you can watch the May 17th episode of GTTV here: [www.gametrailers.com]
If you can stomach Geoff Keighley's douchebag method of interviewing people, there's a lot of information in there about the story, the main character, the weapon(s), the environments etc.

looks fun. at least worth a rent. though, the dismembering mechanic sounds like it'll be awesome the first few times and then get tedious as hell if you really do have to blow every single enemy in the game you encounter apart.

The premise of shooting someone in the legs and arms instead of in the head and body isn't particularly revolutionary. Moving the weak points of an enemy changes the dynamic for probably the first hour that it takes you to get used to it. In the end, it's the same mechanic that stretches across any genre where defeating an enemy is necessary, in that you aim for the weak spot(s). The only difference here is that those weak spots aren't typical spots.
What would have been more interesting would be to allow the freedom to do either. Calm, technical people would enjoy the percision of taking head shot after head shot when swarms of disgusting creatures crawl toward you, while those a bit more sadistic of us would use the stasis gun and repeatedly blow chunks out of the creatures presumed sex organs.
Freedom to do what we want is what developers need to aim for. Not just moving the targets. In my opinion, at least.

@slomo788: Same here.
The graphics look nice and moody, monsters should be a blast with the whole ripping apart and everything, and the weapon set looks quite interesting.
Things I'm worried about are the enemy design- they all look quite similar so far, the environment- there's only so much metal spacecraft I can take, and the AI- because there's no point in having cool ways of killing stuff if they're all braindead zombies rushing towards you.

looks more and more promising. it also has similarities with doom3, a good sign in my opinion because i enjoyed doom3 (and ROE, more of the same).
Some people complain that the environment consists only of dark corridors and metal. So what do you expect in a destroyed and malfunctioning space station, Budweiser, a park and some football?
I only hope that the enemies are not all totally zombie like dumb, that the levels and the environments physics are convincing (a "real" space station not a labyrinth that looks like a space station, artificial gravity through a rotating ring [centrifugal force], varying gravity, magnetic boots that allow to walk on any metallic wall in gravity free space etc.) and that the story is good with enough npc's and conversation to keep things interesting.

@JokesJokes: He's the developer. He's popped up in tons of interviews.
I feel the horror genre is really lacking at the moment so I'm looking forward to this along with RE5 and Silent Hill: Homecoming. Though I agree with the generic design I'm assuming their keeping their more "colorful" monsters secret at the moment. I mean the ganados in RE4 were way more uncreative but in the end they had a good number of memorable enemies.

yes i played both, great games.
what i wanted to say is, the whole setting does not really allow so much variety in its level design. i hope a good story can compensate this. but if the design a "real" space station instead of a dungeon, then we will see crew compartments, c3 areas, tech areas, "surface" areas etc. lets just hope that the devs do not let this game bomb and that the controls are not clumsy.

You know what would be cooler than strategic dismemberment? Being allowed to use the telekinesis gun to pick up enemies and scrape them to nothingness against a wall. That would be sick.
It would also be cool if games actually formerly recognized torture as being not only worse than death, but had some sort of system that rewarded you for torturing an enemy within an inch of their life.
