Take-Two Ponders Entering The Music Game Genre
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 9:20 AM on June 7, 2008

Would Take-Two ever consider setting Rockstar loose on the music game genre? Last night, during Take-Two's Q1 financial results call, Board chairman Strauss Zelnick addressed an analyst who asked exactly that, "given Rockstar's nature". I guess he meant, "as rockstars"?
Zelnick's answer? "Possibly", but Zelnick said there's nothing currently in Take-Two's schedule that fits that bill. For his part, Zelnick is waiting to see how much staying power the trend has, and whether to define it as a "music genre" or a "rhythm genre".
Zelnick said such considerations are "terribly important when you invest in AAA properties that you expect people to play for over 20 hours".
Zelnick has good reason to demonstrate his restraint to his investors, of course - right now his mandate is to prove that they're better off sticking with his guiding hand than with EA's.

No no...oh sweet god please no more!
This is absolutely riddiculous. Not just for the fact that they expect us to buy multiple incompatible peripherals, but also for retailers, who are NOT going to be able to support 4 full band games.

Oh God that would own so hard. I guess I'm one of the few who actually enjoy bagpipe music, so I'd definitely buy it. Go home with your Guitar Heros and Rock Bands, I'll own your asses on Amazing Grace in Bagpipe Hero :D

Yes! Just what I was hoping for! More plastic accessories!
Seriously, Mr. Strauss Zelnick, the company that is still determined to buy your company already makes the game to beat in this genre. Just be honest and tell that analyst that his is the dumbest question you've ever heard.
And then tell everyone that in your upcoming boxing sim you're going to feature lots of improbable and only tangenitally related crossover characters. Because that's 2008's Bloom Lighting Memorial Inescapable Trend, and I can get behind this one.
I'm thinking your special characters should be Niko Bellic, Michael Pachter, the girl from EA's upcoming parkour game Mirror Edge, and the whole cast of That 70's Show.

@stargateheaven: Bagpipes! Nobody has done a bagpipes game yet.
And in fact - Rockstar North are based in Scotland! Case closed. Expect a release for Hogmanay 2009.

Rockstar introduces disposable instruments: smash your guitar on the audience Sid Vicious-style for bonus points!
Either that, or Rockstar Presents: Sitar vs. Shamisen Sick String Showdown. Less likely, though.

Didn't Vib Ribbon do that back on the PS1, generate levels from whatever music CD you put in the PS1 after you'd booted up the game?

I could see something like BEATS that could use your own music collection, but have a more sophisticated analysis of tracks providing more interesting results and gameplay, being very fun. they could of course have special tracks from artists for download that had extra features/power ups built in.

Here's an idea. Instead of using game mechanics to create music, why not use music to create game mechanics? Make a game that responds to the music that players already own.

@Ampillion = That Man.:
Konami have made every music game under the sun, INCLUDING one with a turbtable. Out of all the music games, I still prefer the originals, the konami ones, the best.
I can't even think of an instrument rockstar could do (Well, one that is cool.)

I could see another music style game getting into the market, but I think they'd have to do something different from the rest. No more bars and button presses. Maybe a turntable based game? Or something that involves a little dancing/movement as well? Who knows... but with the entry price to get into the guitar/band market, I don't think the same people who own a Guitar Hero/Rock Band are going to pick up yet another rhythm game if their previously purchased goods don't work with it.

Rockstar was to make Beaterator but nothing happened as of yet. If they were to create a music game my bet it would be hip-hop focused. [beaterator.rockstargames.com]

I like how "music game" is, at this point, essentially synonymous with "Rock Band/Guitar Hero".
Seriously. Rhythm games have always been my favorite genre, and I don't want to see it get killed by a bunch of companies jumping onto the guitar game bandwagon and running it into the ground. There's so much more to be done in the world of music, and this seems to stifle creativity.
Rock Band is great and all, but there are other instruments and types of music in the world, shockingly.

My man Zelnick sure can pose for a photo.
As for all these rhythm/music games, I can't really be that mad. If someone told me that they would all the guitar parts across all games worked on the same controller, I would probably play them all. Seriously. I like it that much.

Rockstar has a music-making mini-game called Beaterator on their web site, where you arrange music samples to make songs. I think he may be referring to that.

@(俗・ ) Grey Gecko: Miyamoto is working on Wii Music. I heard the focus is on making your own music. Before you assume that Nintendo is trying to hop onto the bandwagon, remember that Miyamoto conducted an orchestra of Miis during the Nintendo press conference at E3 2006. During the time, it was only a demo to help showcase the potential of the Wiimote with music games.

Awesome, now we can get a homeless bum simulator. You walk around like GTA4 and hold a guitar hero controller. You bust out in front of other people and if they like it you get money thrown at you and if they don't? You guessed it -- hot coffee.

Rhythm game? Possibly.
Casual game? Maybe.
MMORPG? Perhaps.
Seriously, how can this be considered as anything other than some rich dude saying they'll consider anything that's currently "hot?" He'll ponder ANYTHING, as long as the investors are happy.
...AND CLOSE THOSE LEGS! Is that the meaning of "take two?"

What we seriously need is a cross between a date-sim and music game, where depend on what music you play, you get what girls. Unfortunately it is likely you will have to play music that to hate to get that Girl with G cup knockers.

Rockstar's nature has something to do with rhythm games? Are they talking about the god-awful low-rider hydraulics competitions in San Andreas?
