THQ Takes On Ultimate Fighting Championship
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on June 21, 2008
After years spent perfecting the more theatrical side of arena fighting, THQ is ready to step up to something a bit more brutal. Today they've announced their first title based on the Ultimate Fighting Championship licence, UFC 2009 Undisputed. In development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Undisputed will feature an entirely new game engine to help bring more than 80 of the top UFC fighters to life, along with a robust create-a-fighter mode so you can watch yourself get beaten to a pulp by thugs.
"UFC offers the fighting videogame genre a fresh and innovative look inside today's most exciting live sporting event in the world," said Dana White, president, UFC. "UFC 2009 Undisputed represents a significant opportunity for us to expand our growing, global audience and allow fans to step into the virtual Octagon™ to compete against the world's most prominent mixed martial arts fighters."
UFC 2009 is slated for a Spring 2009 release. I've generally been put off by the generic feel of previous UFC games, so here's hoping THQ delivers something unique enough to hold my attention for more than 15 minutes at a time.

UFC 2009 Undisputed is an explosive fighting game that will detail the action, intensity and attitude of a UFC live event. Players will explore a deep roster of more than 80 top fighters in UFC competition across all five weight classes. A brand new fighting game engine designed specifically for next generation systems will deliver innovative, responsive and easy-to-play controls that give unparalleled command of fighters, as players take down opponents with a variety of mixed martial arts disciplines like Muay Thai, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In addition, the game's Create-A-Fighter system will jumpstart the careers of future champions through character customisation and training management, while a robust Career Mode will develop a fighter's attributes and skill sets while fighting to enter the UFC Hall of Fame through a series of dynamic storylines. The Dreamcast game rocked, my friends and I beat the f**k out of each other in that game.
Lets hope THQ does not turn this into another WWE Smackdown. I hate those games, they don't come close to AKI's No Mercy game engine.

UFC Dreamcast I think holds up today, although it's a bit like No Mercy on the N64
Maybe they'll have a code where Best Buy maxs out your stats & Circuit City lowers them....

@Kanik: I was just going to say that! The Dreamcast one was good. Would it still hold up today? I'm not sure about that one...
As a huge MMA fan (and martial arts!) I'm all for this! The trailer they released months ago was sadly CGI...Here's hoping the fighting engine they're making is up to snuff!
80 fighters huh? I hope the players from Pride are there (throw in Fedor too!) not to mention the legends...

Btw.. here is that teaser I was speaking of. It is basically a year old. And I would gather it has changed completely since this, but I still think it looks pretty decent, even a year later.

It's ironic that you chose Jesse Taylor for your cover photo seeing as how he is the one who f*ck*d up and blew his opportunity to be in the finale tonight! Dana even said "you aint even famous yet dude and you're acting like this!?" but yes I will play a game like this only because MMA is awesome and I love games (der)

As an MMA fan, I'm slightly excited but apprehensive, since the last UFC game I played was crap. Hopefully THQ does a decent job...
Now, if they could only let you do elaborately choreographed entrances ala Genki Sudo when he faought in K-1 Dynamite, it would be a guaranteed buy for me.

I remember when THQ slapped out a teaser for this at least a year ago if not longer. I was pumped with that teaser, it looked amazing, and I had hoped to hear more in the coming months.
The it fell and fell hard, and nothing was ever said about the UFC game that was coming down the road.
This is actually the few news I've heard since then. Glad something is out again, even though its still a long ass ways away. I hope it turns out.

I doubt many of the fighters from Pride will be in it since the whole UFC buying pride fiasco, where none of the fighters from pride had any exclusive contracts, I don't think ole' fedor will make an appearance. We will however get Wanderlei silva, so now I'll be able to watch him stomp Ramages face into the ground for the 3rd time

@shades_of_blue: I agree with your sentiment. I really hope they don't try and "wrestle-ize" the UFC engine.
AkI's wrestling engine is by far the best wrestling engine I've played so far (I'm sure Fire Pro fans will disagree). I actually bought an N64 just for Wrestlemania 2000. Yeah weird game choice for a console seller no? I couldn't resist after playing AKI's first grappler for it (the WCW one). Awesome CAW in their games...
@MadExponent: Yeah very constructive post there. I can imagine not caring a shit must've pushed you to click on the post and comment. WWE is staged. While I respect wrestling as a "semi-sport" (You still have to be in shape to pull those moves off). The UFC and MMA in general is on a whole other level. I've practiced MMA before and it really is hard work.

Hey, guys! MMA homoeroticism jokes? That's totally hilarious and original! Trust me, when you're mounted, the only physical contact you're worried about are the fists in your face and the arm across your throat.
ON TOPIC NOW:
As a MMA fan and a martial artist, I'm interested in this game! As a video game player, I have low hopes! Why? The MMA games I've played have had wrestling-esque clunky controls, or silly 'counter buttons' that leave situations at 50/50% guesses. There's strategy in MMA, especially in grappling situations (clinch and ground).
I'd love to see a good ground system, where you could... I dunno... use one analog stick to control posture on the top, and have your button combinations either try and strike, pass or submit. If your positioning was wrong, your percentage of success would go down. Then you'd actually *gasp* have to think. You could do something analogous on the bottom, where submission and sweep attempts or guard defense would have success percentage based on opponent posture, your hip location, etc. I'm not talking about unreasonable VF4 complexity; the target audience would most likely hate that. I'm just talking about some broad concepts from the actual ground game manifested in the play control.

@HerbalJoker: true enough, however, Rampage is a cash cow. He has stellar fights, and is very very marketable. BJ Penn is great, but he's not personable. GSP is great, but he's not either. Anderson Silva is awesome, but doesn't speak english well at all. And Big Nog has the same problem.
That leaves Rampage as the only champion with major market appeal. Dana is going to protect him, much like he did with Matt Hughes and Chuck.
Don't get me wrong. Wandy is the freakin man. But his appeal is only with the hardcore segment (ie the fans that watched him in Pride).
@ninjafetus: Agreed. In concept, a cool idea, but how do you take something as complex as MMA, and assign controls to it? Also keeping in mind things like punchers chance, or the submission from left field (like Amir vs CB on last nights TUF). How do you model an active guard vs inactive? Lay and pray? So many dynamics to get right, that like you said, low expectations.

@excaliburps: You're not the only one who bought an N64 solely for the AKI wrestling games, I did too. Mario64 was just a bonus. lol My friend imported the original Virtual Pro Wrestling title, from the point forward I was hooked.
Fire Prowrestling is a great series, but I hate constantly being cheesed by the computer. After No Mercy, I pretty much abandoned it. Loved SMS and D, did not care for G and Z. Returns, that completely rekindled my love for that series and finally, finally being able to play it in full English was great. Too bad no one licensed it sooner…importing is so expensive…

@ balls187: I think u may be wrong, Dana loves seeing grudge matches, and having a guy that not only beat but brutalized Rampage twice it'll happen sooner than u think. Back on the game though I saw a bunch of screen shots this morning (can't find the link) and the game looks sick, it had Forrest Griffin fighting Rampage this time and those character models looked sickly real. They even had the cut man Stitch working on one of the fighters and I swear it looked exactly like him.

@balls187 upside yo head: That's not entirely true, they used to have more elaborate entrances back in the day, like UFC 40 or so. A few people have had dumbed down entrances too, like Sokudjou with his predator helmet, Rampage with his howl, and Diego Sanchez with his mariachi band. They're just a thing of the past now, but not any less awesome, which is the point I was trying to make.

I'm just staying modern day UFC, entrances are way toned down. It could be a cultural thing; or perhaps to further differentiate the UFC from pro-rasslin, the later has fairly elaborate entrances.

How the hell is this game gonna work. There's just so much stuff you can do, unless they make it have more generic buttons. Cause what, you have straight punches, hooks, wild punches/hooks, uppercuts, horizontal elbows, vertical elbows, sweeps, leg kicks, body kicks, head kicks, front/rear thrusts, etcetcetc. Now multiply that by 2 for 2 body parts and then add more for blocking, wrestling, and then ground fighting. Hell the jujitsu is gonna be hard to do.
I guess if they do something similar to Spore where they have a buttload of combinations of body parts and the sort, one button in the game could do a lot of different attacks.

@OiScout: I'm guessing the chars made from real life will have their real life styles: IE Matt Hughes stand up will be pretty weak, but his takedown, wrestling, and submissions will be good.
When you create a char, they might have an RPG style point system, where you allocate points to certain areas. After that, you probably get to pick your standup style:
Slugger
Muay Thai
Kick Boxer
Boxer
Wild Puncher
What will be interesting is how they model the dynamics of the weightclasses. Like, Spider Silva walks around at 210 or so, but fights at 185.

I agree with the sentiment here that the fighting engine will be hard to implement properly. There's just too many options and nuances. Not to mention how can you control from half-guard etc.
Oh and there's a new trailer up for it featuring Rampage vs Griffin.
