Who Pitched It?
Posted by Stephen Totilo at 5:00 AM on June 26, 2008
I read a pitch for the entirely hypothetical (?) Guitar Hero: The Beatles today. Can you guess who wrote it?
When it comes time to script this new game, we hope the developers will notice that the Beatles' two early movies, "A Hard Day's Night" (1964) and "Help!" (1965), came as close to being video games as they could in an era before video games had even been thought of. Those movies embed the band's music in action that's nearly as frenetic and sweetly fun as anything a frenetic kid with a game controller could ask for. We would like to hope that it might also be about the extraordinary musical chemistry of Lennon and McCartney, those long, long hours at Abbey Road and the unreal sense of discovery and freshness that came out of that studio.
Game Informer? Reader's Digest? Answer:
It was the New York Times editorial board, who also admit to "a certain sense of loss" when they consider the idea of a video game about The Beatles. A game about the musical chemistry between Lennon and McCartney? Yeah sure. And how about a Beatles version of Ico scored to "I Want To Hold Your Hand"?

I think it's pretty funny to hear people say that The Beatles aren't relevant anymore, when they're Beatles 1 album that was released in 2000/2001 was the best selling album of the year, and has sold over 30 million world wide. Cirque De Solei is running the "Love" show all based on Beatles music, and soundtrack to that is EXCELLENT. Across The Universe just came out last year, a musical based entirely on the songs/stories of The Beatles, and it did pretty well at the box office.
Paul McCartney's world tour a couple years back was one of the highest grossing in the world.
There are very, very few things in the entertainment industry that are TRULY forever, but The Beatles damn sure are one of them. My parents were kids when The Beatles were recording, and they passed on that knowledge to me. And I'll pass it on to anyone I see. Hell I have a Beatles Abbey Road shirt, and almost every time I go out in public, someome comments to me that they like the shirt. And more times than not, it's someone younger than me (I'm 28)
Like someone else said; a Beatles themed Guitar Hero would be a HUGE seller. There's no doubt about it.

@otimus:
GH3 isn't really that hard and there's four freaking different difficulty settings. It's like some of you people just expect to waltz in and play expert blindfolded or something. There's maybe a max of 5% of the songs overcharted >_>.
As for the Beatles... tons of people have been wishing for this since news of an all Aerosmith game. I say don't bother me with these ideas or pitches until they actually become a reality... only then will I care.

@asyouburn: Bugseatbooks is right - both McCartney and Lennon were masters of their instruments, as was George Harrison (Ringo maybe not so much), and what may sound simple in their hands I can guarantee would cause you fits in real life unless you're at their level. I have been playing guitar for quite a while now and many of their songs are still very difficult for me - especially the later stuff. (The early songs are a lot easier; they got better and more technically accomplished over time.)
They were all substance, little flash. They didn't have much care for shredding guitar solos like Malmsteen. That doesn't mean they weren't every bit as good at their instruments. An unusual chord progression can be more challenging to play than any solo. Asking four (or even five!) of your fingers to go places they've never been before simultaneously several times in quick succession can be a lot harder than getting three of your fingers to go places they have been before in quick sequence during a solo.
How this would translate to GH I have no idea, as I don't have any version of the game. I'm sure that like any video game simulation of real life, there are things about playing guitar that the game just doesn't capture, and difficult chord progressions is probably one of those things just judging by the way the controller is designed.

@asyouburn: Actually, many of the Beatles songs are deceptively difficult to play. My wife bought me a book with all their songs transcribed and there are very intricate parts. I'm no guitar wizard, but I've been playing for over ten years and I've struggled through a lot of them.

@JayD16: In terms of an AC/DC Guitar Hero game, I think you mean "it would get too awesome." Because it would, and people would be bursting into flames in their living rooms, heads would be exploding, entire cities, nay continents, would be overrun by chaos, and Activision would find itself buried in lawsuits. Frankly, the Big A doesn't want to be bothered with that sort of legal action, and that's why we'll probably never see Guitar Hero: AC/DC.
Which is a shame, as I would buy a copy in a heartbeat. And I *hate* Guitar Hero.

I'd agree that the Beatles are just about the only band truly worthy of a standalone Guitar Hero title. While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Norwegian Wood would be worth the price of admission by themselves. But Activision, I worry, is more likely to make Guitar Hero: Avril Lavigne Guest Starring Sum-41 than to make any good title.
@sakipooh: You're absolutely fucking nuts. I bet this would outsell Guitar Hero: Aerosmith five to one.

"they need to not worry about popular stuff and worry more about difficulty, like bring out yngwie malmsteen songs"
They need to worry about making songs that are fun to play regardless, is what they need to do, regardless of anything.
That was GH3's problem. It was hard... and not much else. Terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE note charts that was obviously written by people who were not in any shape or form involved in music.

@Bobby McPresscott: I completely agree with this. It sounds awesome and I'm a huge Beatles fan, but I don't see it working. What I do see working, is an entire game dedicated to Led Zeppelin or AC/DC, or classic rock with them all mixed up. Led Zeppelin is hardcore on not licensing songs out though, so I don't see it happening any time soon. But they have to stop releasing games like "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith".

Bobby McPresscott

To be completely realistic, I think 95% of the Beatles music is unchartable. The only thing genuinely consistent in the music is Ringo, and of the inconsistent the only thing frequent enough to warrant even an entire song's length of playing is Paul's bass. A vast majority of Beatle guitar licks are 3 second bursts between repetitive chords. The songs with good guitar tend to be lopsided towards that or accoustic.
The Beatles were just too damn all around musical to work in a music game. They were incredibly good at making music, but as a result of it half the time they were barely playing because of the million other things going on at once. Even when there are good underlying riffs, your attention is severely divided, if not altogether directed elsewhere within the song.
People talk about how much they wish they could play things like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", but I always assume they don't have a clear mental picture of the song. I've seen it and other songs attempted to be mapped in Frets on Fire, and it is unavoidably repetitive. While the song itself is awesome, it would be infinitely more interesting to play a song like "Hello, Goodbye" on bass. Another example is that despite the incredibly hardcore opening to "Revolution", afterwards it immediately reverts to the normal Beatles pattern with little emphasis on any one thing. Ironically in that scenario, the much softer "Revolution 1" would work better because the bass part is once again consistent and highly enjoyable.
The difficulty in getting the rights alone leads me to the conclusion that while we may see individual songs, the idea of making an entire game around their music is too far out there. The Beatles weren't "Guitar Heroes"; they were music heroes, and I don't think you can channel that kind of awesome through plastic.

@badasscat: No, Ringo was and is an incredibly competent drummer, he just hated drum solos and was much more concerned about being the persistent rhythm that they needed instead of being flashy (not that you can't be both, but not everyone can be John Bonham). They had to beg Ringo to do the solo bit at the end of Abbey Road.
(On a randomly related note, I had a dream last night I was getting high with Ringo and John on a movie set.)

@mva5580: I think the Beatles are incredibly relevant. Though they won't have a reunion as long as John and George remain dead, people are still listening to their music all the time. I'm 19 and half the stuff I listen to is Beatles stuff.
Also, the LOVE show in Las Vegas is INCREDIBLE. Absolutely stunning. I saw it last summer and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. Hearing Beatles stuff remixed and remastered so well is an absolute joy.
If there are Beatles songs in Rock Band/Guitar Hero, rest assured that iTunes isn't far away. To have the songs in a game, they'll have to be remastered, which is a slow and tedious process. Apple Inc (The music company) will undoubtedly release the remastered stuff, because all that work would be in vain if it wasn't on a CD or released online. They could make MILLIONS just on the sales of the songs online and on CD, not to mention royalty's from the game.
I'd still rather have a Led Zeppelin game. That is the only thing that would bring me back to Guitar Hero. And on that bombshell, it's time for me to go. Thanks for reading, and good night!

I bought Guitar hero 3 after doing awesome and absolutely loving both prior additions (lol 80s? I only buy good games, thanks). At first, I thought it was enjoyable but not awesome. And then I hit the first boss. And I. Was. Not. Amused. How they managed to screw a game up that badly I will never know.
And then, after plowing my way to the end, I sold that thing and swore off Guitar Hero until they can make a game worth my money. Guitar Hero 3 was a crap game that ignored the best parts of the older titles in the interests of greater challenge for it's own sake and corporate branding. I am 100% pleased in my decision to sell that trashpile and the previous two to get Rock Band.

Never expected that. At all. But what I did expect was to be able to take my current Guitar Hero skill level and apply it to GHIII.
Even with the wide-open window to hit notes (far larger than either GHII or RB) I still feel like a spastic pre-schooler on HARD...let alone my battle through Expert (which has turned more into an exercise of frustration vs. "YEAH I'm ROCKIN!")
That's the problem with GHIII. You're skill level in EVERY OTHER GH game is completely null and void once you load up GHIII.
And it's not like they just tweaked it on the high end in Expert. The final setlist on Hard has things that you barely see until the last few sets on EXPERT elsewhere.
