Yes, Guitar Hero III Downloads Will Work In Guitar Hero World Tour
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on June 21, 2008
The bad news? Activision is making Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Wait, that's not the bad news. The actual bad news was that all those Guitar Hero III tracks you downloaded from either Xbox Live or the PlayStation Store won't work on your copy of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.
Here's a dash of good. Guitar Hero World Tour will support your existing GH III downloads, which begs the question "Why would you buy Guitar Hero: Aerosmith?"

@phoneykiller it would be cool if there wasn't a hardware war with it. I can't believe they make a profit off instruments, so in general it's just stupid. I just don't see the logic of splitting their market when they could have it all.

Harmonix has already said that RB DLC would work with RB2. And there's no way that GH/GH2 DLC could work with any other versions of the game. Two completely different developers working with two completely different code.

it shouldn't be GH2 dlc and GH3 dlc. it should just be GH-related dlc. any version of GH that supports dlc should be able to play any GH-related dlc. hopefully that's the way they'll do it in RB, though.

I'd imagine that they would just be guitar tracks, though it would be impressive if they actually went back and "upgraded" each one.
This is a feature that needed to be in the game. The same goes for the sequel to Rock Band - it wouldn't make any sense for all of those tracks put out thus far to be incompatible with future versions.

@Lazlo: actually, that's completely untrue. red octane holds the rights to GH2, even though harmonix developed it. because they hold the rights, they have access to the technical knowledge of how the DLC songs are formatted. that's all neversoft needs to know to make any GH games they produce compatible with the GH2 dlc.
furthermore, neversoft developed GH3 themselves, so they already know the format for GH3 dlc songs. this is all they need to know to make any future GH games compatible with GH3 dlc. so they have the knowledge to make GH3 dlc cross-compatible and they have access to the knowledge to make GH2 dlc cross-compatible.
ok, the above was all just to refute your bogus claim, but what i was originally alluding to in my first post was that red octane should have come up with and stuck to a common format for all dlc. if they had done this, then a previous game's dlc would automatically be recognized by any future games. this is what i was saying that i hope they do with RB.

@ThisCharmingMan: If they were releasing GH: 4, 5 and 6 in the same year, I might agree. But really, there's just World Tour & Aerosmith, maybe Metallica. I doubt Activision is expecting massive GH3-like sales on the latter two - but I'm willing to bet it'll still sell respectably well.
GH3's sales (best-seller of 2007, wasn't it? considering it only came out in October, that's very impressive) showed just how frickin' huge the market for these games is. And it's a genre that's really only been brought to the mainstream's attention in the last year or two. Plenty of room in this space yet.

Even if it's guitar only it will add a decent amount of value to the DLC. Maybe enough for me to buy a couple packs I had considered. I've only bought the 3 Muse songs for GH3 so far. If they do add full band value to the existing tracks the Foo Fighters/Velvet Revolver will be downloaded by me for sure, and some other packs will have to be evaluated.
In Rock Band I've bought something like 45 songs thanks to the better prices, being able to split packs into individual songs, and added value of Drums/Vocals. The DLC differential is pretty significant when you consider that for the most part I prefer GH3 to Rock Band.
Kudos to Guitar Hero for giving the boss battles and Dropkick Murphies songs as free DLC though. That stuff beats a lot of the Rock Band DLC that I paid actual money for! :)

@freakout: Is this even confirmed to be GHIV anymore? I have a feeling the change from a numeric sequel to a "spin-off" type subtitle gives me the impression they're holding back on calling this GHIV.
If anything, World Tour is the "first" in a new series. If it's successful, we'll see "GH:WTII"...and then likely ALSO a Guitar-only GHIV.
Because if GHWT is a hit...what's the point of releasing GH:Metallica if it's guitar only? What will encourage people to downgrade?

Cool, but as long as there aren't new peripherals, why isn't at least GH:Aerosmith just a downloadable expansion? It's kind of annoying to swap discs for different songs. GH:WT is different, I know, because of the new Rock Band-esque peripherals.

@TRT-X: Good point, WT might be just as much of a spin-off as Aerosmith or 80's...
Personally, I wouldn't be complaining if they kept the "main" GH series guitar-focused. I appreciate having a setlist full of guitar-heavy tracks for solo play. Plus it allows for epic face-offs, if you have a friend of similar skill. I love co-op play, but there's still a lot of fun to be had in competition, too.
Actually, the next game I'm expecting after WT and Metallica is Drum Hero. Red Octane will have drum production running smoothly by then, ready to crank out in the squillions it'll likely sell...

Do we have, like, an actual source for this? Because IGN says otherwise.
"Normally I'd say that the over 85 songs (all of which are master tracks and are promised to be a "step above GH3") on the disc for Guitar Hero: World Tour is impressive. Then I'd follow it up by saying I'm bummed that none of the downloadable content from Guitar Hero 3 will work with World Tour"
The paragraph goes on to mention a renewed commitment to DLC (which, given GH3's record compared to RB's is something I'll have to see to believe), including full album downloads and an in-game music store. But this article was just written yesterday and no correction has been published, so I assume Activision wouldn't pull a 180 on this within a day.

People will still buy GH:Aerosmith if they like all the songs on there enough, because that's the only place where they'll be able to play those songs. Outside of playing on a real guitar or as a custom song on the PS2 versions, etc. Not that that's the point, we're alking about Guiar Hero fans here. Long story short, more monies for Activision.

That's awesome, shouldn't be hard to do. I mean if they have a song writing system it shouldn't be hard to simply import note charts from another game. But still, they'll have to make note charts for drums.
And Pollock, it wouldn't be a real big deal if they weren't compatible. Think of it as a chance to play your old DLC as a full band.
And as for the article...guess someone isn't a very big Aerosmith fan. I am, and will be buying the game. To not buy it because the DLC isn't compatible is just silly, it's not like you're going to throw away your GH3 disc.

@AgainstOne:
Sorry, wrong again. They own the rights to the name only. When Harmonix left they took everything data related with them. Red Octane has no rights whatsoever to use GH/GH2 code because the code itself is property of Harmonix. Apart from Neversoft saying that, why else do you think they would build a brand new game from the ground up? Think about it.
Lazlo
AgainstOne
Posted 1:48 AM 24/6/08
@Lazlo: i know that harmonix retained the rights to the code, but the code isn't what we're talking about here. we're talking about the format specification of DLC songs. without that format specification, Activision/Red Octane would not be able to produce any more DLC for GH2, a game that they own the rights to. are you seriously suggesting that this is the case? that, at the very least, it wouldn't hold up in court for red octane to be able to create DLC for a game they own the rights to?
even if this is truly what you believe (which i find quite incredible that anyone would believe this) it is easily refutable, considering the last DLC put out for GH2 came after after (yes after) Rock Band was released to retail. i hardly believe harmonix was still working on DLC for GH2 during the Rock Band release time-frame.
