Zero Punctuation On Oblivion
Posted by Mike Fahey at 9:20 AM on June 5, 2008
Leave it to Yahtzee to make me feel bad about a game I spent over sixty hours exploring. I could have sworn I had thoroughly enjoyed myself back then, but now I'm not so sure. I suppose this is the double-edged sword of reviewing older titles. The week before last's Painkiller review made me dig out my copy of that game, and now he has me pondering burying Oblivion.
Of course no one has that much power, and I never did complete that last Shivering Isles godhood quest...

I sold Oblivion, because I realised that I don't want to spend the first 4 hours killing rats.
In any game.

Sud; vanilla Oblivion didn't have you killing rats for the first four hours, it had you killing bandits, animals, and monsters: All of which are balanced according to what level the players character is at so there is never a battle where the odds seemed unsurmountable. It also meant that there wasn't ever any real challenge. Worse then spending four hours killing rats in my opinion.
So well done, you played 5 minutes of Oblivion and didn't actually learn a damn thing about the game, congratulations.

Wow. I like his stuff, but this was by far the most unfunny "review" he's done. This is probably one he's had sitting around for the last year or so ready to stick up in case there was nothing worth reviewing.
As for Oblivion, I find the game baffling in that I don't think I would ever put it in my top ten games, yet I've put more hours into it than any single game ever. It's basically my "I'm bored. Let's wander around Cyrodil," game.

I never liked Oblivion, the thing that bugged me most was how the enemies leveled with you. You never got to the point where you could run into the city and destroy everyone with ease. My friend even beat the game on level 3 because it didn't require you to make your character stronger.
That and some enemies appeared to be significantly unbalanced. I remember being able to kill certain enemies in big suits of armour with ease yet a mountain lion destroyed me in 3 hits.
While I'm at it, I hated the character's faces and the extreme bloom. Travel to the main city at midday and no longer can you look at people's faces, the immense light streaming off them too blinding for even a short glimpse.
With that said I can understand why people liked it, just certainly not my cup of tea.

Video doesn't work for me until I go to ZP's site.
I think it's safe to say that if not by the time he reviewed SSBB then he must surely have criticized at least one game that everyone enjoys by now. Nevertheless, he always makes valid points and does it with a laugh. Heck, the animations alone are usually worth the watch.

Well he is a comedian for sure, but besides Uncharted (racism huh?) his reviews have always been on point. I don't think the points he gives are not as much reasons to be disgusted by the game as things that might disgust you in a game that you may (or may not) like. Oblivion is an impressive masterpiece but I would always rather play through CoD4 for the 11th time or get fragged online then slide the game into my PS3. When I DO decide to play it though, it's another story...

I was like the only person in the world who didn't like Oblivion when it came out, for all the reasons Yahtzee cites here.
Morrowind was a rich and diverse world, Oblivion was just as Yahtzee said. The same square mile of landscape copied+pasted 14 times. The combat was stiff, the voices were plentiful but mediocre, and there were just so many glaring logic holes, I found it impossible to suspend my disbelief.
I mean, you go into a person's house and jump around on their table, and you're fine. But if you so much as PICK UP a single carrot, the entire town guard is on your ass. Any time I would start to get into the game, an issue like that would pop up and pull me right back out.

Just go to the linked article to watch the video.
Is it just me, or is he talking slower than he used to?
Usually I agree with the flaws he points out in my favourite games, but I found Oblivion to be very immersive. The landscape doesn't have much variation, but that's what you'd expect from a medieval setting - it aims for more realism than WoW (well, as much realism as you can get with goblins, magical fireballs and the like).
He's right about the NPCs though. And I did like Picard. Shame he croaked so soon.

I have to agree with Yahtzee on this one, especially the part at the end where he asserts (in text) that he thought Morrowind was a much better game. It may have had a crazy interface and some notable flaws, but Morrowind had so much more spirit and variety than Oblivion, at least for me.

He's a funny critic, he has bashed a few of my favorite games, but it didn't make me enjoy them any less, nor did it make me reflect on countless of hours of fun I had and then think... I have always considered Yahtzee's reviews to be satire and there's nothing wrong with that, I throughly enjoy them. Though sometimes I do cringe when I see comments of people supposely expressing their desire not to buy a game because of how "spot-on" his reviews were.
Most of the points made in his reviews are nit-picking, heck he even says that in one of them. Yet some people take it as some game breaking bug that would sour your overall gaming experience.

I laughed my ass off at this one, primarily because I played probably, oh, about 5 or 6 hours of it, got HORRIBLY bored and then uninstalled the game and gave it to a friend (who also got bored with it and pawned it off on someone else).
Aside from all of Yahtzee's (extremely valid and spot on) criticisms, the character generator alone nearly kept me from playing too far into it... EVERYONE in this game was some degree of fucking HIDEOUS. I spent at least an HOUR trying to make a character that wouldn't cause me to throw up a little in my mouth if I happened to make the horrible mistake of actually, you know, LOOKING at them. Couple that with the voice 'acting', and the bland cookie-cutter landscape and it was one big snoozefest.
At least with WoW you have a social element and SCENERY :D

Honestly, the world was cool but the gameplay was awful. Nothing ever really changed, I was fighting things the same way at retarded power levels as I was when I first started out. The little flare I shot at rats was the same little flare I shot at huge demons. The difference was a damage rating.
C'est la vie. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting, but I'd rather play a good game with an average setting than an awful game with a great setting.

@the_answer: That's the way it should be, gaming shouldn't have sacred cows. Just because something is critically acclaimed doesn't mean it's good! The first Halo is heavily praised, but all it really is is a lackluster FPS game. What makes it special is that it really brought multiplayer FPS to the public eye -- it's the game that brought it to the frat.
I suspect Oblivion's GOTY status(es) resulted more from what it showed a game could do and from its massive scope.

You can get the Platinum Hits version for $30 like I did. I got that one only because I decided I would never play it enough to want the extra content. But after buying it yes, I am slightly disappointed because it was the only top-rated 360 I had not bought or at least rented/played. I only bought it because I decided that a rental would kind of ruin it for me for such a large game. Besides, $30 isn't too bad for a little disappointment (then again, I'm only a couple hours in, I could still be impressed.)
On another note, I still need to buy GTA 4 when I get the money. I rented it first since I had never played a GTA before, but it is a game I will definitely buy at some point. Bioshock, not so much, I could do with just another rental.

Hearing different actors say the exact same things word for word really pissed me off, all it shows is writer laziness.
If they just would have changed the words around a bit, it would have been that much more immersive.

Forests resembled real forests. To some forests are boring (in real life). Meh, I enjoyed exploring and finding things. I actually liked the repeated foresty areas, made that game seem more realistic to me than a new landmark, or major spectacle right around every corner. The game wasn't perfect by any means, but it sure is a blast to play because you can do what you want. The enemies leveling up with you is a bit annoying though. As is the experience system which gives the same exp for casting the most powerful spell as it would to its equivalent of the smallest spell.
And there is no problem with the bloom/HDR lighting. It's just a cool special effect. If you don't want it, you can turn it off (PC version at least).

It's not without its problems, but the whole package just dwarfs every other RPG I've ever played. All I needed to get immersed in the game was to run across the countryside. No matter how quickly a reviewer talks. I still am not a fan of Yahtzee and shit like this is exactly why. If you type out his exposition, he reads just like any old GameFAQs troll. But because he says it rapidfire with a British accent, people fucking love it.

He might be right, but none of those points ever bothered me the first time I played through it. I just remember loading the game up and, three months later, I woke up with most of the quests beat and a bad case of carpal tunnel.

@Strangelove: I might have to give it another shot then, I only played the game in its original state cause I borrowed it off a friend.

As a few others before me have said, Oblivion is an okay game out of the box, but a COMPLETELY AWESOME MIND-BLOWING EXPERIENCE after a few (dozen) well-selected mods. I'm not entirely certain whether that's cause to praise or damn Bethesda.
I also think that the scenery could have done with a tad more variety. If I wanted to explore a forest, I'd--you know--explore a forest, IN TRUE HIGH DEFINITION. I liked running around Hell, though. And Shivering Isles. That was loads-o-fun.

Meh. I only laugh at most 3 times in his reviews. (once in this one.) It's usually a very half-assed laugh too. Yet for some reason I just HAVE to watch his reviews when posted on this here internets website.
I have this never-ending hope that "oh, maybe I'll actually like this review."

Well, the thing I'll give him is he's spot on with the voices, except for Stewart and Bean.
I too loved Oblivion. About 200+ hours of it and could raelly do so much more with it.
Also, Strangelove is correct. Get the PC version of the game and get mods. You can make it look even better with much higher res textures, get rid of every possible character looking ugly, make the god awful armor designs better, re-balance the auto-level up monsters, replace the unsightly HUD with something much more intuitive and easy on the eyes....anyway yeah.

"Leave it to Yahtzee to make me feel bad about a game I spent over sixty hours exploring"
Only 60 hours, I spent at least 130 hours on that damn game. And thats not even counting the shivering isles which probably adds 35 or so more hours.

It's odd. Just the other day, my friend and I were talking about how Morrowind was so much more immersive than Oblivion. Although I love the gameplay changes that Oblivion brought to the table, something about it didn't draw me in with the same verve.

I can't fully agree with everything he says but damnit he does have a point. I am surprised with such a hugely stacked game that almost every place outside the cities look alike and that there are only like maybe 5 voice actors.
And I have to definitely agree that everytime I actually get into the game, something takes me out of it.
i don't know why, but it still trumps many other games out there. and I still haven't beaten it yet, 120 hours in.

Whats messed up is that I put in over 500 hours into Morrowind. Oblivion felt 'different' but not really in a good way. I wish my pc could run Oblivion, if it had I wouldn't have bought it on 360. Mods make a HUGE difference.

@SupaPhly: Isn't it one of the bases of caricature to take a tiny flaw and blow it out of proportion for comedic effect?
@mugido: I had the same experience. After the umpteenth identical-looking cave/town/Oblivion gate, everything felt like more of the same. And since I didn't find the story too engrossing... I had a good time while it lasted, though.

Well an ok game, I actually felt that oblivion was missing a number of things compared to morrowind. While oblivion is techincly bigger than morrowind, morrowind feels begger due to the varying landscape sections and the fact that you cant see all the way across the map. In addition oblivion had a piss poor user interface. I'm sitting at my computer, I don't need size 36 font text with 2 inch Icons. Somthing like morrowind where you can actually display the whole world map on a high resoultion monitor while looking at your inventory would have been nice.
Maybe its me, but I prefer written dialogue to spoken dialogue for the majority of games. Spoken is important for the occasional comment made to spice up a town, but anything past hello or the weather is nice and you are cutting back on content.
Also... whatever happened to having to actually read the directions on a quest. As opposed to having every quest loaction marked out for you.
I am hoping when they do Fallout 3 it has more of a morrowind type of feel than an oblivion type of feel. (obviously I hope the most it has a fallout/fallout 2 type of feel, but things will obviously be different with the altered perspective)

@Zio: See I am glad I am not the only one!!!
@belo: That actually doesn't look totally eye-bleedingly wretched! Congrats! :D
Still, the game wasn't unplayable, but I think at that time my gaming was split almost evenly between FPSs and MMOs. I DO have friends who absolutely ADORE the game, but I couldn't get over how homely EVERY thing was in the game and the random annoying wolves and skeletons etc.

@Antiterra: I know that, but what I was saying is that he knows now that he is famous and people worship him (look at all the people who suddenly talked greatly about Painkiller after his review) and uses it to control peoples view of games, whether its a good game or an average game
with average games he usually declares them as crap, causing a small chunk of the internet to lean on his side and then they convince other people.

Oblivion wasn't a *perfect* game, but it was (and is) a great game. Sure, if dungeon crawls are your thing, then you might get twitchy about the levelling - but dungeons are best left well alone in my game, and I'd rather just be off wandering around and enjoying the - yes - scenery.
I mean, come on - you have icy mountains in the north and Greek-island beaches in the south. The "jungle" to the east at least bears a resemblance to the Everglades, and the north west is craggy rocks and deciduous forest. You can't tell me the game doesn't have scenery.
In fact, that's pretty much what I do in my own game - too many hours to count. I just install a pretty house mod and then wander over to look at it, ticking off any quests I encounter along the way. I've booby-trapped a stuffed head to fake an accident (really!); I've chased painted trolls around with turpentine (yes!); and I've even watched it literally raining dogs.
I've not yet made it to the top of the mages' guild, nor pulled off the ultimate heist for the theives' guild - so there's still some way to go.
Come on, admit it! You love this game! Sure, most of the NPCs ming for England, but there's a guy working for the fighters' guild in ... Skingrad, I think ... who is really something of a hottie - and you can't say that Sheogorath's voice doesn't do it for you - *all* the girls love Sheo.
Which brings me to Shivering Isles - as a standalone title, it would be one of the best ever games, and really, if you haven't tried it, you should jolly well feel ashamed of yourself. Pah! "Comedy" reviews or no, if you don't enjoy Oblivion, you really don't know what fun is.

I didn't have the immersion problem he had. As soon as I stepped out of that dungeon I was immersed but I agree with everything he said about the characters, dialogue and story. I just didnt give a rats ass about the story and after about 80 hours the gameplay grew stale for me. But those 80 hours prior to that were great just roaming the countryside raiding dungeons and shit. My biggest beef was there just wasn't enough variety in weapons and armor. Once you got the daedric stuff you were pretty much done. I want Diablo level variety in my loot in a RPG.
