Crysis Warhead Sure Looks A Lot Like Crysis
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on July 1, 2008
Not that we were expecting the Crysis series to be turned on its head, but Crysis Warhead looks perhaps a bit too familiar. Maybe we're reading a bit too much into this action packed teaser trailer for the EA published shooter and, no, it's not a proper sequel and maybe Crytek has already spoiled us with the gorgeous original, but I can't shake the feeling of deja vu.

@Krondonian: Well I don't know, have they confirmed where COD5 is going to take place then? I doubt it'll look like Crysis though - they'll be making it for consoles again and that means the same engine will be used on PC. I want the ultimate graphics explosions in Normandy 1944 mate ;D

@Heyyou27: Turn motion blur and color grading off and reduce shadow resolution through the config file. Brighter hues and lack of motion blur aside, I'm running Crysis at just-beneath-very-high settings at 1680x1050 and 43fps with a brand-new HD 4870.
A 8800GTX can achieve that same fps at 1440x900. I used to own one.

@Krondonian: It's kind of pathetic that even a $650 card released 6 months after Crysis won't be able to run it with antialiasing or on Very High.
@PsycheE: I've thought about upgrading, but it isn't worth the money for what is ultimately not that great a game. Even if I spend $1300 on two Geforce GTX 280s, I still won't be able to run Crysis at 1920x1200 with 4xAA on all Very High settings. If you play it on Medium or High, Crysis doesn't really look all that amazing.
@UFO: Great idea, I should buy a shittier monitor because Crytek can't make a decent game and Nvidia can't make a card to run said game.

Maybe I'm just getting old and boring, but I'm kind of disappointed this isn't going to consoles. Don't get me wrong, I could run it on my PC (well, I ran the demo pretty well, never picked up the game); I just can't be arsed playing PC games these days, mostly because I like gaming on a large TV.
Some games (I'm looking at you, Sins of a Solar Empire) are able to pry me away, but they're less and less common.
Anyway, that was fairly off topic.

@Candlejack: Isn't that (kinda) what CoD5 is about?
As for CryEngine2...from Wikipedia:
As of March 7, Simpson Studios, a new development studio, has licensed the CryEngine2 out to use on a Massively Multiplayer Virtual World (MMVW) that takes place on a terraformed Mars.
On May 11, 2007 Crytek announced that they would be using the engine to create a game based on their new intellectual property. The new game is rumored to be a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game based on an interview in which Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that it would be. It is also confirmed that it will not be a port of Crysis and in fact may not even be a first person shooter.
There's also some building planners and an Art and Design college working with the engine...but that's beside the point.

crappily written code tied with a crappily made game. Sure it looks nice but at what price? There is no point that a game with those graphics can't get done with the ridiculously high level cards we have now. I'm sure with better code and tweaking the 360/PS3 could come up with a game that looks very similar to crysis graphically.
I don't see where all this tech is going to. Heck Farcry 2 looks better than crysis. What's going on there? I thought they were the same engine?

Yea, I was thinking that it looked 1:1 like Crysis when I first saw this. Not that that's a bad thing. I'd just like to see the engine be used in other games, at least other settings than that. I mean honestly I'm tired of futuristic shooters or action games. Here's what. Wouldn't a near photo realistic WW2 game be intense?

I have an old, old PC yet run semi-modern games. I just have accept that it's not going to look like the screenshots. Frames per second is the most important thing for me.
As for you PC, maybe it's a different issue? I've read lots of benchmark tests and reviews for Crysis, and with that PC it should do just fine. Perhaps it's your CPU?

@Heyyou27:
The majority of people with a 8800GT can run Crysis at high settings with DX9, I believe. Mine ran like shit with DX10, but once I stepped down to DX9 it ran perfectly (with a few exceptions). Of course, you must have a decent processor and ram as well. I think motion blur is a big resource hog, but I firmly believe that anyone who plays Crysis needs to have Natural Mod installed first. It optimizes a lot of the settings, so not only will it play faster, but it looks amazing as well.
I think resolution plays a big part as well, I can't imagine that running it at 1920x1200 will do anything to help its speed.

It's great that they are able to lower the specs this time. Those lame "yeah, it'll be great for the 100 people that can run it" jokes are getting on my nerves.
Like Yurli said, it was a mistake for them to allow the very high settings from the get go because it just turned a lot of gamers against them, but it is nice that they have somewhat future proofed their game.
There was also an article in PC Gamer Magazine which was quite interesting, it's part way down the page:

With all the brown and grey games these days, Crysis Warhead's bright and lush visual style is more than welcome, even if it's not particularly original. Hopefully this will run a bit better than the last game. It seems possible since I have a feeling Crysis wasn't optimized very well considering the fact that the barren, frozen areas ran significantly worse on my machine than intricately detailed tropical parts of the game.

I'd get this as long as they managed to fix all the problems with Crysis, and that just not the specs. Crysis Warhead isn't an expansion pack or sequel to Crysis. It's more of a stand alone game that has the viewpoint of Psycho instead of Nomad. As for the graphics, you can't really tell in the video but they are upgrading the lighting and explosion effects and optimizing the game for lower specs. Two new vehicles are added and there is a new mode for multiplayer.

@Bob6k: Nomad was definitely the most forgettable character. Loved Psycho and Prophet. I hope they get more dialogue.
Still I found the aliens to be really annoying to fight, and felt about them the way most felt about the mutants from Far Cry (I liked the mutants). I really didn't even want to play anymore after the first few alien levels.
Fights felt boring and random as they flew around.
crysis runs pretty poorly on my system (i need to try switching to dx9) 8800gt OC 512mb quadcore 2.4 ghz and 3gb of ram, so I may weight until I upgrade cards again (I just did this actually, geesh) Got a 24 inch monitor, so no native 1920, by a long shot.
