Capcom USA 'Investigating' Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on July 2, 2008
We're excited about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. The game seems like a fun arcade cross-over. Sure, there will be Western arcades that import the game, but will it get an official release outside Japan? Capcom USA is looking into it. No doubt the American licensing issues for the Tatsunoko Productions characters is sticky. Capcom USA's Christian Svensson points out:
We haven't discussed any home console plans for the title yet, so platform discussions are a bit premature. All that's been anounced is arcade... There are a lot of licensing issues around the title given that those properties are held by different companies across the West and they vary by territory greatly. It was created as a Japan-only project but we're investigating.
That's sure nice of Capcom.

While waiting for the next Marvel vs. Capcom, this could be a decent placeholder, especially since I'm not interested at all in Street Fighter IV (haven't really had any fun with the series since, well, the Genesis/SNES days).
They should absolutely include a miniature EVA from Evangelion - technically, they did co-produce it. And the Samurai Pizza Cats. ^_^
@abdelilah: "so wii"? Really?!

ADVICE TO CAPCOM!
If the license issue is a problem just give the Japanese release optional English text!!!!!!
Ala Phoenix Wright!!!!! I don't care about overseas release, just give it optional English text!!! OPTIONAL ENGLISH TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Karas or Samurai Pizza Cats aren't in. Then I wont Buy (Import). But try to bring it outside Japan.

When he says investigating, that makes it seem as if there are some legal woes involved. "Evaluating" would be a more appropriate term here.

Looks like fun. Hopefully this can capture some of the fun that was in the Marvel vs. Capcom series.. I like the new licenses, but it's a bit of slim pickings if you ask me (although playing as Casshern itself is pretty slick).
With Street Fighter IV changing the face of the Capcom fighters both in visuals and with some of the gameplay mechanics I've been hearing about, this might be a pretty sweet throwback.

What the fuck is Tatsunoko? How does Midway get the DC license and Capcom can't come up with anything more universally known.

Those licensing issues are what's going to keep the game from getting a US/UK or otherwise release. It simply unrealistic to consider the alternative. They're not "investigating" anything.

It would have a much better chance of coming stateside if it were Capcom vs. Shonen Jump, as it stands most modern day Stateside anime fans introduced to Anime by Toonami and Adultswim probably have no clue as to most of the characters Tatsunoko offers.
I myself have only seen about 7 or 8 of there properties and most of those I've seen wouldn't lend well to a game like this.
Would be cool to see D'eon and company from Le Chevalier D'Eon in the game though.

@GloatingSwine:
Back at'cha, why wouldn't you want to the read text?
Just because it's a beat em up doesn't stand with me.
Capcom have always translated all their fighters into English bar Japanese exclusives. I'm not just talking about text what about Menus, move lists and play modes etc?
Anyway if they don't include it and never bring it overseas I'll still buy it. My fighting collection is pretty sweet.
I just bought Sengoku Basara X ltd ed which will never see the light of the Western sun.

@silkylove: Uhhh... because Marvel vs. Capcom was done, oh, I dunno, 9 years ago. Midway is just now catching up.
Tatsunoko Productions is one of the best-known anime production companies in Japan. As it says, it was meant to be a Japan-only project.

Capcom, if you bring this over, I will forgive you for many of your other mistakes.
Yes, I'll even forgive you for the voice acting in Megaman 8 and Megaman X4.
So I have two words for you:
DO IT.

Ignore him. He's a (now banned) Sony zombie.

Aw well. Japan only I guess. For some reason we can't have Jump! Ultimate Stars over here despite the fact that Viz owns most of the licensed series and might even bring some of those over here. So why should we have Tatsunoko vs. Capcom?

It really comes down to what characters are in the game,it's all about if they can get the license holders to let them use the characters . One of the more difficult companys they are going to have to work with is Sandy Frank productions.

It'd be nice if we could get some of the Super Robot Wars series out here...even an English version of Original Generations and or OG-Gaiden would be great; they were both Banpresto originals only and the GBA versions made it so the PS2 versions would be great too.

Okay, I know this game's licensing will make it crazy hard to release in the US, but you NEED to do this Capcom! I man I would totally stop complaining about how stupid DC is for alowing DC vs MK if I could get this game!!!

@damienchowder:
Because it's generally quite superfluous to the process of playing a beat em up. You don't need to know what the moves are called, just what they do to your opponent's sensitive parts, and you can find out what menu options do by fiddling with them.

@w1ndwaker: oh crap, I was just thinking about that.
Does anyone know if the PS3 is region free? (in the hopes that the game actually makes it to the PS3). It would be a big loss if there is no way of ever playing this game. I know that it is way too early to know this, but does anyone has any clue of what would be the way to play this game if you live in the US?

I don't know what the big deal is. I'm guessing the only home console to get it will be PS3, and seeing as how it's all region for games, you can import it if you're that hard up for another Capcom fighter. That's what I plan on doing. It'll most likely have an English text option.

Shit. I have a feeling this game is not coming to America. Just like Namco X Capcom.
I know Namco X Capcom had alot of text to translate but this fighting game must have alot of licensing issues. I dont even know what that really means. Just let us play the damn game.

I just love that somebody said "So Wii."
It's like getting ready to look so good, except hateful somehow. I'm going to start using that at work. Even if the person who said it was joking, it's hilarious. "Dude, you don't want that, it's so fucking Wii." "But... it's.. it's a Wii." "I know. It's way too Wii. Fuck that. Buy some candy."
We sell Mario sour candy now for some reason. Sorry, beside the point.
Honestly, Tatsunoko isn't a license for which I'd be very excited. I'm an anime fan, just... Not so much many of their series. Outside of Mach Go Go... Alright, I got into that one as "Speed Racer," I'm not gonna lie. But I got into the cartoon with the hilariously awful dub when I was tiny. I refuse to watch the ridiculous money-grab of a guaranteed to be awful movie. So hopefully I can retain some of my leet cred. Anyway, outside of Speed and Racer X battling Ryu and Ken (hopefully in a tag-team battle) it's really not that enticing to me. And I think I made both Speed and Racer X in Mortal Kombat Armageddon anyway. Not the same, but the novelty has already worn off.
Also, All Stars and Super Stars can be imported very easily. There's not any region protection on the DS, is there?

This is why I hate our legal system. Another awesome game that won't come here, just because someone over here "owns" what was created and still belongs to someone else entirely over there, and who must be consulted even after permission of the original creator has already been given, or else: Sue, sue, sue!
Feh.

I don't understand why these license problems occur. It keeps some of the coolest cross-over games from hitting the US. The US companies need to think about the consumer on these. Plus, if they worked it out, they would a huge amount of money from the US Anime following.

Capcom USA should really be "investigating" Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G instead of going through licensing hell with this one at this time.
Seriously, what is Capcom USA thinking when deciding what to bring or not to bring over...

looking into this one is like Bandai USA looking into bringing the A.C.E. (Another Century's Episode) games to the U.S.
theres WAY to many licenses involved in it. (for those who don't know the A.C.E games are mecha game series that mash up over a dozen or more Mecha from differant anime ranging from Gundam to Aura Battle down to Macross and even customs)

Cashern isn't licensed in America anymore, I don't think. The Teknoman and Gatchaman tv series are licensed by ADV but I don't know if that means the characters themselves are licensed. This will be interesting...
