Dissidia Script Is 'Double The Length' Of Crisis Core: FFVII's
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on July 2, 2008
Square Enix's upcoming PSP "action RPG" Dissidia: Final Fantasy features heroes and villians from Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy X. Epic stuff! The game does look and sound big for a PSP title. But just how big? Says the game's senior director Takeshi Arakawa:
Mr. Nomura [the game's character designer, pictured] has been at all the voice recordings, and the script is double the length ofCrisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
Sure sounds like Square Enix is making a AAA PSP title. Good for Square Enix. Good for PSP owners.

Hmm, Crisis Core was pretty lengthy in story, and that was made to be a prequel, so I can just imagine what they'll make up while bringing all these worlds together. Crossovers can create infinite possibilities for storytelling, and they're only 50% done? Well, I can already tell this one is going to be huge.

i won't play it.
And i can't STAND Tetsuya Nomura and his girly men.

@Mit: I'm thinking each character will have their own story mode, where they interact with the rest of the fighters. Something like that would require a surprisingly large script, especially if the player has a say in how the character reacts to someone else.

Stuff like this does not need an enormous script. There's no way it can be coherent and reasonable to mix all these characters, don't spend half the game time trying to prove it to us through lengthy cutscenes and voice acting. It's unnecessary.
Announce the rest of the characters already though...

So this game is double the length of a game that's supposed to be a good story prequel.
...the thing is, this game is a crossover mashup, no more serious than something like Marvel Zombies.
...and it's gonna be focused on combats and huge epic battles rather than the "quality" stories that the Final Fantasy games usually have.
Square, you've just got a buyer.

Ahh! I'm torn between my need for Zidane to murder Cloud and Tidus and my extreme hatred for every game that has Tetsuya Nomura's shitty "art"! Seriously, even before I knew he existed, I hated those games (those games being practically everything squeenix has made, FFX to now). I'll probably end up getting this though, for the Multiplayer (it does have Multiplayer, right?), and to see the completely ridiculous storyline they come up with.

@Archaotic: I don't understand that. See, my favorite FF game is 6, and the only feasible way I can play it is the advance version. The remake doesn't destroy the sanctity of the original product, it allows a fresh audience who could not play it the first time around get a chance to enjoy a true classic.
Although I guess you could justify it being similar to how Hollywood remakes everything into the ground. I know I would lose my shit if they remade Bangkok Dangeous with Nicholas Cage.... oh. I did.

Jokes aside,
I've gotten sort of sick of japanese RPGs.
First, 99% aren't RPGs.
Second, the stories are so gooey and sentimental it makes me sick with all the excessive sugar (example, "Tales of" series)
Third, a few years ago, japanese game designers still had an edge (technical and artistic) over us westerners, that time is LONG GONE.
Fourth, it has been a few years since japanese RPG art direction and style completely STOPPED interesting me. It stagnated and it makes them all look the same. (Same way with the current big buff armored marine tendency happening in the US)
Anyway, thank god we have the likes of Fumito Ueda and of the the former Clover team. They are the true japanese pioneers.

@Archaotic: "If they put Kefka and Terra in Dissidia"
Holy shit, dude. How did you get a comment star if you possess any doubts that Square-Enix will not use what they own in this game?
Absolutely nothing will be sacred in this shit. That they originally pitched the game as a "casual" "fighting game" and now they're saying it has a voice script "twice as long" as a full-length RPG kind of smacks of a developer (as usual!) having not a fucking clue what they're doing.
Tetsuya Nomura is like that kid in every elementary school class across Middle America right now, who wants to be a film director because "Star Wars Episode III" is "awesome".
We call this "Sweet Taste For Sour Shit Syndrome".
In conclusion: Fuck This Game.
In second conclusion: I can't wait to play it. It's going to be hilarious.

And for reference, their is no way Terra and Kefka aren't in this game. Firion is in it for god's sakes and FF2 has to be the least played.
Follow this formula: Main Protagonist & Main Antagonist from each game FF1-10 is nearly garuanteed.
The radicals would be characters like Chocobo, Vincent from FF7, Locke from FF6, Kain from FF4. Popular ancillary characters. They could really go for an extensive roster, lets get FF Tactics in here too. RAMZA BEOULVE!

I'm not sure if that was directed at me or not, though hey, I'll pretend it was!
1. I will play this game, whether you care or not! And I will delight in hating it, if I do hate it, and I will delight in enjoying it, if I do enjoy it!
2. Fan-service is, indeed, not a bad idea -- it makes money! I am, however, convinced that this game's story will be a bunch of ham-handed shit with oodles of long explanatory dialogue scenes wherein the camera pans around two otherwise interesting-looking and recognizable characters from completely different games as they meticulously discuss the reasons for their being in the same place at the same time. I am also convinced that the game itself will be complete shit, mostly because they're getting a bunch of people who have never made a fighting game or even a decent action game to put it together.
I would love a proper Final Fantasy Fighting Game, and I've been saying for years that Namco should just ditch the Soul Calibur characters, sign a deal with Square, and make Soul Calibur an all-Final-Fantasy fighting game. Soul Calibur, at least, has a semblance of substance; I'm pretty sure this game will just be Kingdom Hearts for Two Players, where you press either the "Awesome Button" or the "Yay Button" over and over again: if you press the Awesome Button and your opponent presses the Yay Button, you win!
The point of fact is that there will never be a Truly Awesome Final Fantasy Fighting Game (think of the background stage / soundtrack remix / weapon customization / quest mode possibilities!), because the Japanese Games Industry is Deathly Afraid of Satisfying Everyone. Seriously. I've seen the secret spreadsheets that run the industry; they distinctly prohibit games makers from making one game that everyone would be content with for the rest of their lives.
3. If I don't want it, I'm in the minority? Last I checked, there are six billion people in this world, kid! If this game goes on to sell three billion and one copies, you come back here, and I'll gladly bow down before you. Otherwise, you owe me an ice-cold Coca-Cola Zero!
Re: Kefka and Terra:
Now that I think about it, Terra and Kefka might not be in it after all: they might be reading this very comments thread, considering which characters to leave out until the sequel!

@megaStryke: Um, Tobal 1&2, Ergheiz (which isn't as bad as everyone makes out) and Bushido Blade...
I dunno, everyone goes on about how great Smash Bros. is, when it's just a fountain of fan service...there's no reason to denigrate this title when it's offering the same concept, albeit one with seemingly more justification, considering the nature of FF. I mean, Final Fantasy is really all just combat between intermissions, when all is said and done. And, for the most part, this one looks like it will have a decent amount of stuff in it.
I'm really happy the machine is getting a title like this. It sounds really unique. I'd like to know where to find other games like this, but I bet we've yet seen something of this calibre.
Don't mind me, I'm just getting excited, and I'm no FF fanboy.

@pylon_trooper: Now that I think about, those Square fighting games weren't developed by Square themselves but by outside companies. Square only published. Since Dissidia is in-house, this would actually be the very first fighting game Square has ever developed.
Then I think more about it and realize that those other games were made before Squaresoft merged with Enix. Enix members could have some input on this game. So I'm trying to think about any fighters or brawlers that Enix put out, and I start to think of other things, but then things get too complicated and my brain shuts down.
Dissidia is just bananas.

This isn't really saying much. If you didn't do missions, Crisis Core was super short.
Besides, I don't know why people are so down on this game. Bushido Blade was AWESOME. Ergheiz wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, it wasn't great, but it had its moments. Will this game be Soul Calibur 1 or VF4 good? Probably not. But come on, does every fighting game need to be "top tier" in order for it to be worth playing?
Please put Balthier in this game. PLEASE. He is easily the best FF character ever made. I have the spreadsheets to prove it. If you argue with me, you're arguing with science, and as global warming advocates will tell you, you can't argue with science.
