I used to have so much fun with runescape. It's what my 5th grade to 6th grade summer consisted of. I got to level 80, then my brother and his friends quit. They're the ones who got me into it, so when they left the game lost a lot of it's fun. Now they play Maple Story. *sigh*

I only played Runescape for about 10 minutes, but seeing as it is a browser-only MMO, you guys should cut it a little slack. For kids that want to try MMO's, but don't have an excellent PC or Console at home, this is the perfect introduction for them, and something they can play on any computer. (i.e. Library, School, etc).

Sure compared to some high quality non-browser based games (Guild Wars, Diablo, WoW), it looks like shit, but its bar none the best Browser MMO in the world, and not bad for something written in Java.

I used to be really into Runescape, for about 3 months. Then I quit and never looked back.

Actually, most Runescape players I know are 14 year olds at the library playing on 5 year old Dell machines. I hope Jagex doesn't alienate those players by making it impossible for them to play. Hopefully they'll still have the low detail one.

Awesome, they finally added hardware acceleration to it. I think it's funny how everyone bashes Runescape instead of looking at it like it is. RuneScape was never meant to be a WoW killer (yes, it debuted LONG before WoW). It has a large war full of quests to do and items to get, like every other MMO. It's also browser-based and offers a free to play version. RuneScape has accomplished many things for the MMO world, especially introducing new players to the genre through its pick up and play ability. Now, the main issue you guys have had with it- the graphics-have been kicked up a notch. Their work with Java is, has, and always will be awe-inspiring. I have complete faith that if Jagex went into DirectX or OpenGL programming, they could make the game look infinitely better.

I remember back when I first started playing. Back before there were banks, back when if you died you lost EVERYTHING...back when the BEST armor was Black Mail.

Man, I used to play the heck out of it. Some very good times.
I just wish they hadn't all but abandoned non-subscribers though. It was the reason I quit.

I still think more games should adapt it's crafting system, it's the best in any MMO.
I didn't even fight that much during the years I played. I used to just make armor and food, and sell it to players. I made some very nice profits, without even swinging a sword.
All I ever did was craft. Armor, food. Weaopns, the pots and dishes to make the food, water containers to use during the clay making...it was incredibly deep, imo.
If Runescape got anything right, it was the crafting system(s).

Ah i remember that game, me and all of my friends played it back in the day from 8th to the 10th grade. Lost at least a year and a half of my life to that game. Then it just got really lame with each update and now it sucks and this update doesnt change my opinion. Gah i will never play another MMO in my life.

But just because I stopped playing with action figures, hot wheels, Simon, and Hungry Hungry Hippos didn't mean that those games were suddenly crap and no one would buy them anymore. I used to play Runescape a lot over the course of being like 10/11 to about 14, mostly with long sections of not playing before one of my friends joined and asked me to help them or something.

It was pretty awesome, I don't know why most of you seem to hate it so much. I only stopped playing it because I finished all the quests I could do at my current level and didn't want to powerlevel.

That's probably true; it's a pretty old game (it's like 6 years old, isn't it?), and when it came out there weren't all the thousands of MMOs that there are today. That doesn't make it any worse of a game.

Truth is Runescape remains a good base for an mmorpg. I did look into some free games my self out of curiosity, none really managed to reach the variety in Rune. Not to mention its a browser game! with no installs or whatnot. you can argue that the theme is tailored for younger audience but that does not mean older gamers can't enjoy it. On a side note: Me and my friends actually enjoy being in an innocent game with no one waving their -you know what- in your face! (points at second life)

I actually liked Runescapes plot best out of all the MMORPGs i've played, so enhancing the graphics will make it a lot more playable.

Hah, Runescape is finally updating... It was one of the first MMO's I ever played. I got bored after a month and just started wandering around. Then I tried again a few years later, same thing happened, now I just log in now and then to see what's new. ITS UTTER CRAP NOW... The economy is down the drain, since Jagex now controls it all via trade limits and Grand Exchange, nonmems never get anything new, and its just pitiful.. It makes me want to cry for a game that opened so many doors to so many people that is now just atrocious, no other word for it.

Their improvements are incredible for a java game too.

Heck, I've not played Runescape for years (it was still new and exciting back then; a lot of people still hadn't discovered it) and while I got bored I still remember being impressed at the breadth of the game. It lets you do a lot of things you'd expect from a 'higher grade' MMO like crafting and the like.

I think people who decry it as being 'kiddy' are fooling themselves. I've never seen a mature person ever care if something was cartoony or aimed at children; it's usually those who aren't mature that are passionate in their abandonment of things of this type.

I'll probably pop back in once they let non-subs in just to have a looksee =D

It's a BROWSER MMO! What part of that don't you guys understand? It has incredible graphics for a browser game, and it is a very good MMO for younger kids. I used to play it when it JUST became 3D and I got really into it, now I am uninterested, but that doesn't mean that I hate it. The game gave me some good times.

It may not look nice or anything, but this game had a lot of things other MMOs didn't. Quests that weren't just collect x and bring it back to x. And a pretty complex crafting system. Back in the day this game also had a pretty good community.

My Rant:

This is a piece of crap, major grinding, idiotic lore, generic lore, assy lore, holycrapthisfreakingsucksassidratherplayultimaonline lore, nothing different from other mmorps, and who cares if it's free? It's a piece of crap that most 12-14 year olds play. I got into until 2 years ago, that's when I finally played WoW and TF2. Runescape's community isn't that great either. Just a bunch of prepubescents who's only language is compiled of cruse words and idiotic grammar.
And all the adults who do play Ruenscape? Please, they're lying. If they even bother with this, I'm sure many of the older players are secretly playing WoW instead of this piece of crap. Why? Because they can afford it. And henceforth, they are more mature. (Eh, maybe a little bit more).

I've played this game for 3 years. Got to level 98, beat nearly all the quests, and managed to become to envy of my friends both in real life and online. And what do I have to show? Shame, shame that I wasted so much time on this idiotic game.

So go ahead, call it a "Good" java game. Maybe it is. But so far there are so many better games that I'd rather play than this.
