Top Gun Theme Free on Guitar Hero III
Posted by Brian Crecente at 1:00 AM on July 2, 2008
To celebrate Fourth of July, and perhaps move a few more Guitar Hero IIIs, Activision is giving away the Top Gun Anthem song via the Playstation Store and Xbox Live starting this Thursday.
Anthem is the guitar-heavy song from Top Gun, not to be confused with Kenny Loggins's Danger Zone. Unfortunately the free DLC won't include a heavy metal fro or aluminium parachute pants.
"TOP GUN ANTHEM" TO LAND ON GUITAR HERO® III: LEGENDS OF ROCK AS FREE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT FOR FOURTH OF JULY
SANTA MONICA, CA - July 1, 2008 - Grab your wingman and fire up the F-14 for the announcement today of a special Fourth of July treat for Activision, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Guitar Hero III®: Legends of Rock fans. Beginning July 3, 2008, the legendary, GRAMMY® award-winning "Top Gun Anthem" will be available as a free downloadable song for the game.
The instrumental, guitar-heavy theme was immortalised in the hit film that inspired a generation of young men to awkwardly serenade women at bars, perform perfectly-timed "flipside" high fives and threaten to "buzz the tower."
The song will be available as a free download to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock mavericks and their wingmen everywhere for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and in the PLAYSTATION®Store for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system on July 3, 2008.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock offers the ultimate rock experience with new wireless guitars, freshly added content and features including a multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, grueling boss battles, a host of exclusive unlockable content and visually stunning rock venues. Expanded online multiplayer modes allow axe-shredders worldwide to compete head-to-head for true rock status as they riff through a star-studded soundtrack including master tracks by legendary artists such as Aerosmith, Guns 'N' Roses, The Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine and Pearl Jam, as well as original songs by guitar icons Slash and Tom Morello. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is now available and is rated "T" for Teen by the ESRB. For more information visit http://community.guitarhero.com.

But yeah, Danger Zone would have been more awesome, but I guess you can't argue with free.

@JarenFace: If they had put Tragically Hip as DLC for Guitar Hero III for Canada Day, I wouldn't need fireworks. Although given the choice here, I wouldn't be surprised if we drew Bryan Adams instead.

For free.... I'll live...
But c'mon if they really wanted to do something kick ass for the forth of july why not the national anthem by Hendrix... First of all THAT ACTUALLY FITS. Second it is a ton more awesome than this track.

I was just listening to the tracks that are going to be in the Who pack and I can not agree more.

Why all the "Theme" hate? This song is much more iconic than Danger Zone. Yeah, the Loggins song was great, but this is much more inspiring as a theme song.
I put it on par with "Main Title" from Last of the Mohicans and "Axel F" from Beverly Hills Cop as songs that perfectly invoke the tone of the movie. Now, if only there were Orchestra Hero, and Synth Hero, we could enjoy those songs as well.

@CHU BOI: Yeah, "Danger Zone" was the first thing I also thought of.
But geez..."I Am Murloc", followed by "Top Gun Anthem". And RB is giving us "Promised Land" from that new movie for free.
Looks like the Full-Band Arms race is heating up in the form of promotional giveaways. Quite frankly if it means more new songs to play at no cost to me...SIGN ME UP!

This is full of Epic Win. The "Top Gun Theme" has always been a guilty pleasure of mine when it comes to guitar riffs; and even though Rock Band is my number one love over Guitar Hero, this still makes GH that "Hey, I'll give you a call a little later when I've got nothing going on" type deal.

The saddest part of this is that a guitar song, it's nothing much. It's that same simple melodic piece over and over again for two and a half minutes (minus piano breaks), then a minute of 80's rock solo, then back to repeating that same phrase until the end. If the main riff were at all challenging or interesting, or if there were more fills or variation, it might make wading through it to get to the solo worthwhile. But when 75% of a song is that boring to play, I don't see why they'd even use it in this game.
As for the clip, I love how the guitar dude with the ridiculous hair throws in all that body language as he plays that simple riff over and over again. Does the actual guitar sound reflect those histrionics? Nope, still sounds like a studio musician, sitting on a stool, picking out his part for a day's dollar. But for the video, you gotta make it look interesting somehow, I guess. But this song and this video reminded me of everything that was wrong about the 80's.
