Next TF2 Update Is A Pretty Heavy Endeavour
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on July 3, 2008
And so the rumours of a possible Scout class upgrade coming up next dissolve in a hail of mini-gun bullets as the newly-created Official Team Fortress 2 Blog discusses upcoming changes to the Heavy, every Medic's best friend. In designer Robin Walker's highly informative post he explores the process behind updating a Team Fortress 2 class in great detail, starting with the overall goal of making the Heavy more viable as a standalone, non-Medicated class.
From there he explores the process of achieving that goal, including constraints (will the changes overpower the Heavy/Medic team?), entertainment value (will the new tools be interesting?), and weighing the changes against the basic skillset of a successful Heavy. It's an intriguing look into the process behind making Team Fortress 2 a better game, and a great read overall.

I would be supper exited. since I love TF2 but looks like valve straight up dislikes the PS3 so I'm lucked out. Maybe if a get a better computer I might just buy TF2 because I really do enjoy the game but getting no update really dose suck.

I would love for the option to do it for CoD4, then that game would be much better IMO. Nades can unbalance a game.

I'm hoping this doesn't make the Heavy unplayable like it did with the Pyro. The 'Backburner' has massively unbalanced the game. I'm liking TF2 a lot, been playing it more since the unlocks.
But I'm not sold on the heavy unlocks. The strong Medic/Heavy partnership was a purposeful design decision. But now they're moving away from it? Is it due to the unlocks changing the role of the medic?

@telek: If I remember correctly, in one of their interviews Valve explained that they removed grenades for the sake of class differentiation. With grenades every class could just throw an explosive into the enemies resulting in somewhat similar playstyles. They are still talking about differentiation, so the only class likely to get grenades would probably be the demoman, and only in exchange for one of his other weapons.

@hahnchen:
While I agree that the medic/heavy combo is probably a purposeful decision, I'm guessing they're seeing too heavy a reliance on medics from heavies, to the point where an unpaired heavy is seen as no longer a sensible option. I don't see anything wrong with re-addressing this balance by making the heavy more survivable on his own. After all, it's not like they want to make the heavy/medic combo redundant, or just the same as every other possible medic pairing. I think they want to make heavy/medic a strong option, but would also like the heavy to be more effective in his own right without a medic.

The Heavy is one of the classes that needs an update sooner than later, for sure. But I figured that maybe the Soldier would be up next as a Pyro that's mastered the air-push can pretty much make the rocket launcher irrelevant.
Personally, though, I would love to see an Engi update with a new set of toys for him to build. They probably won't do that, but it'd be nice.

It seems like making the heavy more viable without a medic would make the medic less necessary?? I didn't think playing without a medic was that bad with heavy, although he's my least played character so what do i know. regardless, if there is a difference, more power to the medic! I hardly had the impression the heavies were being slaughtered like lambs without medics though!

Anyhoo, if I were making the weapons, I think I'd go with these:
Svetlana(Anti Tank Cannon)- That's right, I'd give him an anti tank gun, just because he's just that awesome! I figured something that shoots slow but hard, even at long range, would compliment Sasha's fast firing but only efficient at close rangeness.
Lena(Derringer)-For those who don't know, a Derringer is a small pocket pistol. I just think it would be funny to see the Heavy carrying around something so small.
Antonina(Brass Knuckles)-Seems obvious enough as a choice, the hard part would be deciding how it differentiates itself from bare fists. Perhaps higher damage, lower crit rate?

Instead of a fist, a big board. The Heavy swings it around and it has a very wide attack range and a slightly longer range. No critical, just more likely to hit a group in front of you.
I don't see myself spending much time with the Heavy or trying too hard to get the unlockables. I'm not good with a Heavy. I look forward to killing all the Heavy's which will be coming along though.

While the free tweaks and additions only currently apply to the PC version of the class-based multiplayer shooter, Valve has stated its hope to detail its support for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of TF2 in the near future.
"We'll probably be making some announcements pretty soon on what will happen with the 360 stuff," Valve marketing VP Doug Lombardi teased back in May. "Unfortunately I don't know that any of that will make it to the [externally developed] PS3 [version]."

He should get a shield, swat style, that completely clogs his field of vision with a small slit in the middle to see through. Protects him from everything in front, allowing him to get into position and flee. He can push for minimal melee damage, taking his #3 slot.
Shotgun should be a beanbag launcher, stunning opponents for a few seconds, making them slower and their aim a tiny bit wobbly. Would fire like the pyros flare gun.
I'm not sure how you could improve on the mini-gun. Maybe one that fires much more accurately and without the spread, but give half the damage. Useful for long distance targets.
Roller skates would be nice also.

I'm thinking valve is updating characters based on their total amount of played time. This seems about right, having the Heavy come next. I would then think the sniper after this...but maybe spy is played less than sniper? Soldier will probably be the last update...But I'm probably completely wrong on all of this. Anyway, I will be looking forward to the Heavy update. Albeit, Heavy is my third least played class, I still have a lot of fun as him sometimes...Hopefully it will arrive before I move to another country!

As someone who plays heavy 90% of the time and is usually in the top 3 on my team, I feel qualified in saying that the class is just fine. I don't even play with a medic on me most of the time. All you have to understand is the way the weapon works. From there, you know when to fight and when to get out of dodge.
I don't want more heavies running around. Three heavies w/ medics are an enormously powerful force. Don't need more than that.
That said, I'm interested to see where they go with this.

How can they think making heavies more self sufficient is a god idea? A heavy should be played like a tank (the vehicle). It needs support from others units to function properly in the field. If it is isolated, it is easy pickings.
Just because the average player is more interested in his own score than teamwork, doesn't mean the teamwork aspects should be plastered over! I've been really enjoying the tactical style of heavy play lately, I don't want it to be just another run and gun soldier/pyro play style, else the game becomes COD4 or CS.

@robotleawesome: Hmmm...I kind of like this idea with the stun bullets...slow them down, then switch to the mini-gun and finish them off! However, I do think the melee attached to the mini-gun would be pointless because no one ever just runs up to a heavy with a readied mini-gun.

@nautnaut: You must be playing some magical servers if you feel Sniper has a low amount of play time. Even if he currently has less time (because everyone is so busy playing pyro), I've lost track of how many times I switched teams because our dumbass team had 5 Snipers. Batting them proved quite entertaining.
If anyone should get the upgrades last, its Demoman, or Sniper.
@Pezdispenser: This image has been floating around as of late. [img185.imageshack.us]
I think some sort of slow firing, extremely heavy damage weapon would be quite nice. Although I think it may be troublesome, as it could probably prove horrifying at long ranges. Killing a sniper with a crit minigun from an extreme range is quite a priceless moment though. :D
@Fwiffo: Right, but the heavy as of now feels like a nearly pointless class, merely there for comedic value. Now that the Pyro update is around, he desperately needs the boost. Why should the medic stick to the heavy when the backburner-wielding Pyro has the 2nd highest HP in the game and is a much more difficult target. And he can nearly crit on command. Heavy is absolutely useless without a medic. These two problems combined pretty much make Heavy as bad as Pyros used to be.
Lucky for us however, Valve still has the Heavy tactics in mind...so there isn't much to worry about yet I'd say.

Doesn't help that the maps, at least in my opinion, we're created for a more console'ish view point considering how many of them are really small, where as the older Call of Duty games had some very open and\or big maps. (However, I would not mention the maps from Call of Duty : United Offensive, since those we're created with the idea of having vehicles in them)

I think it's great that they're doing the Heavy next. One of the things I've been thinking is that not enough people play Heavy. Heavy are extremely useful as they are, but: 1) they're only extremely so when paired with a medic. and 2) Not that many people choose to play them.
There's not much variety or versatility to the Heavy, so it's often not an attractive class, not without knowing that you have a dedicated healer.
It'll be a trick to balance, that's for sure, since they're already so useful and powerful. How to get people to want to play the class, without making them overpowered?

Be interesting if, like Battlefield 2142, they gave Heavy a alternate mini gun that gets more accurate the longer its fired. Obviously they would need a downside to it, like no critical hits. Some kind of pistol would be nice for secondary weapon, since both mini gun and shotguns are not really good long range.
I don't play heavy much since it doesn't seem as useful as a soldier or pyro unless you have a medic, so I'm interested to see what they do with it.
