Burnout Paradise To Introduce Planes
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 AM on July 5, 2008
Once was a time Burnout was all about the cars. Then they went and brought bikes into the mix, and everything changed. Criterion got a little...crazy. Started thinking less about the vehicles and more about the pure speed. That doesn't make it any less surprising to hear Criterion is thinking about moving beyond terrestrial vehicles altogether, though, and has announced that, after it's done with the Cagney update, it'll begin working on introducing planes into Burnout Paradise. Yeah, planes. No idea how that will work, but the prospect of crashing a plane into a car at high speed, then going into crash mode, is no doubt an appealing one to the game's core userbase.

@Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic: Actually Polyphony seem to be going for that with Gran Turismo 5 this gen.
I heard different new elements will be introduced later (like damage modeling). Knowing this, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually offered news car (maybe synchronized with the actual introduction of new models during big Auto Shows. Maybe even new tracks and enhanced physics. Who knows!
Didn't they talk about GT for kids too?

Aw...I sorta feel something has been lost. What happened to the sleek, efficient racing that was in Burnout 2: Point of Impact?! It was all about driving as fast as possible and rewarded dangerous driving, but didn't have that Doritos Extreme flavour that post Takedown titles now have.
I sorta mourn the implementation of the Doritos Extreme.
Talk about feeling like an old codger.

See, this is what I'd like to see more of from other developers. You make a solid core game...then expand the hell out of it with periodic updates. To the point where you don't necessarily need more than one of "Game X" each generation.
Hell, console games take so damn long to develop these days that it seems like a good route to go...each generation gets its one (or at most two) Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Burnout, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Metal Gear, etc.
I mean seriously, do we really need three to four sequels of every franchise each generation? With rare exception, I'd say "no".

@Tetsuwan:
Agreed. I love Kotaku, my main news site - but Ive recently become infatuated with Burnout Paradide - so when I saw this news story I knew it wasn't 100% confirmed.
However, there is a test screenshot of a plane in this month's Edge magazine in the UK..

You know what, I've actually have felt bad for not buying this game and supporting Criterion. I think I'm going to do it this month, foregoing my budgeted Ninja Gaiden II buy. They really want me to play this game.

@justhesh: Ehh? Quite a lot of people think B3 was the best in the series.
And yeah, planes were actually coming for a long time. Rumor was around since the motorbike announce.

Does nobody here listem to the burnout podcast? They have been talking about the planes for months! It looks like the planes will not be racing, but will act as flying cameras for people who want to observe people racing and challenging. They will probably be able to crash into cars though, and may have some challenges of their own. Burnout paradise is awesome, and anyone who likes burnout and didn't get it is missing out on something special. The single player is just practice for the multiplayer, use it to earn new cars and learn the city, then just hop online!

@pylon_trooper: I share your sorrow. Burnout Two was easily my favorite of the franchise. I HATE traffic checking. So lame.

Diddy Kong Racing...?
By the way, this sounds familiar: First cars, then bikes, now planes... Then, the next Mario Kart will include planes!!!!

I like the burnout series (started with takedown), but don't care for paradise that much.
It seems like in their effort to create an open world racer, they left out a lot of the features that made the previous burnouts fun for me.
/at least now we're finally getting online road rage. That should have been a feature in the game at launch.

Regarding my earlier comment:
Hey, I'm not saying I believe that. I'm just saying there's one or more idiots out there who will.
Like I said, I think it sounds cool and would play it. Burnout on it's own is pretty cool anyway, but add jets? Damn.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Burnout Paradise is NOT a racing game. It is a driving game that happens to include racing. Much in the same way GTA has races, but Paradise is actually fun.

OMFNG... This is game is awesome even before the updates.
Since the played the demo, and picked up the game shortly after it debuted, I've never grown tired of it.
Now Planes....good god...I feel like that Rick Ashley song now...

only way you'll crash planes into the ground is if you're stupid. crashing in the air makes no sense either. now if there were a max height limit. like say the damn plane isn't allowed to fly higher than a trucks for some odd reason, then that'd be interesting to dodge traffic. i still don't see this working well.

They showed us some footage of planes months ago. Someone on the development team made it for fun and they decided to show the community just to see what they thought of it.
They still haven't decided if they're putting it into the game yet.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, everybody.
There has been *no* announcement about planes coming to Paradise. Not a single one. I'm one of Criterion's elite fans and I'm in daily contact with members of the team, including those responsible for the announcements.
The only thing that has happened with regards to planes is that the team has a prototype of a plane that was done by a member of the team for his own personal pleasure. Aside from some footage of it in one of the video podcasts and allowing some of the visiting fans to try it out, nothing further was announced about it.
The podcast also repeatedly stressed that it was a prototype and had a VERY good chance of not making it into the game.
Someone at Kotaku must have been itching to post and dug up this old nugget. Nothing to get excited about.

San Francisco Rush for the Dreamcast had freaking retractable wings(other versions lacked the wings), but you could only use them if you were already airborn. It was still insane fun though, especially with the stunt mode, trying to use the wings to float your way into tokens in the sky. If paradise let you retract wings and take off into the sky from the highway, it'd be insanity. Even if they only have one end-game bonus car that can retract wings, it will be intense. Would be so great to see separate race times for races completed entirely on the ground versus ones that took the aerial shortcut. So long as you can fly over the ocean a bit, it'd be pretty nice to be able to fly low enough so as to ski on the water, then hit a water ramp and launch back onto land.
Played GTA4 whenever it came out, but after Paradise, the cars and graphics in GTA4 just seemed a bit weak. Of course you can't run over people and steal their cars in Paradise, among all the other things you can't do in Paradise, but great things would happen if the driving element of GTA were to improve to Paradise's level.

This sounds just crazy enough to bring Burnout back from the dead.
