Cannabalism, Slavery and Sex in Fallout 3

Posted by Brian Crecente at 11:20 PM on July 8, 2008

Fallout 3 maybe the game I am most excited about going into this E3. I say maybe, because there are some other titles up there that have me pretty psyched (Left 4 Dead). But Fallout 3 for me is a wonderous mix of nostalgia and clever game design.

I can't talk about what I saw yet while playing through a chunk of the game last month, but the Bethesda folks took the time to throw together a massive fan-driven 25 question and answer post. In it they touch on everything from child killing and drug addiction to AI and dialoguetrees. Here's my favourite question. Hit the jump for one on the AI and two more screens. Make sure you check out the full post if you're interested in the game.

At a press conference held yesterday in Japan, Namco Bandai's Makoto Yoshizumi has apparently announced the development of another Tales game. This time for the Wii. And no, he's not talking about Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, he's talking about another one. With Dawn of the New World, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Hearts and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 all on their way, this makes the currently unnamed title the fifth Tales game currently in developmenti. Leave no stone unturned, Namco Bandai!

Balance Board Skateboard Add-on, Bwah?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on July 8, 2008

As posted earlier, Kotaku's own Mike "Michael" McWhertor was impressed with Skate It's straight forward incorporation of the Wii Balance Board. But for some, maybe just the regular Wii Balance Board isn't enough to get them in the mood for skating. Maybe they want something to sexy the board up. You know, like some sort of snap-on peripheral. Nothing's been announced by EA, but rumours persist Skate It will ship with something like that. When asked if such Balance Board peripheral exists, EA replied:

That's something I haven't heard. So... Our focus is just working with what is provided by Nintendo. So there's not an extra piece. You know, it's really about working with the Balance Board. So if you have one, this is another game you can play with it. It's not about fitness, it's about skateboarding and having fun.

There's a video after the jump. Watch it if you like.

Nintendo, SEGA, Ubisoft, EA All Back PEGI Over BBFC

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 9:30 PM on July 8, 2008

After the Bryon Review suggested a new system requiring games that would normally receive a 12+ Pan European Game Information (PEGI) rating be subjected to review by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), publishers like EA started to worry about even longer UK game release delays. Both the BBFC and PEGI are trying to carve out control in a UK game ratings power scramble. Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association head Paul Jackson explains why PEGI is superior to the BBFC:

Tthe Platinum Trophy icon on the trophies page has gotta a lovely makeover. It was previously a crown (as seen on this post) and now it's very nice. Hit the jump for a closer look.

Relax, Codemasters' F1 Game Is A Sim

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on July 8, 2008

Despite the fact the last few Sony F1 games were fairly forgettable, some people are worried now that Codemasters hold the Formula 1 licence. Worried they'll make a forgettable game. Worried that, being Codemasters - the team behind Grid and Dirt - their F1 game will be some kind of arcade racer. Well it won't! Responding to such fears on the official boards, the official response from Codies is:

GRID and DiRT are aimed at an arcade audience and they do that very well. F1 has different requirements and will get a completely different treatment from our in-house team, including full on sim options, physics, rules and regs etc. We will also have arcade requirements catered for as well. How this will be split we do not know yet, but split it will be.

No word on whether they'll also include team spying and nazi sex dungeons, but we can only hope.

Epic STILL Not Interested In Making Wii Games

Lots of people have the Nintendo Wii. For example, I have a Nintendo Wii and, yes, maybe you do too! With such a high install base, making Wii games would seem like a valuable part of any developer's arsenal. Not Epic's, no sir-ey. The developer has stated in the past that it has no intentions of making Wii games, and Epic honcho Mark Rein still is sticking with his nothanks.jpg for Wii development:

New Tales DS Footage

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on July 8, 2008

Announced earlier this week, here's some footage of the latest Tales game for the DS, Tales of Hearts. Glad they went to the trouble of including some CG stuff for a DS game. Also glad they've gone to a lot of trouble for the rest of the graphics, because for a 3D game on the DS, this is looking nice.

GfK Buy ChartTrack, Good News For European Sales Charts

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:30 PM on July 8, 2008

While we're treated to precise sales figures from Japan, and decent approximates from the US market, it can be a difficult thing to nail down European sales figures. And by difficult, I mean largely impossible. Not only is the continent split across dozens of nations and languages, but there have long been two companies collecting sales data for the region: GfK, who handled most of continental Europe, and ChartTrack, who were largely responsible for the British market. Well, as of yesterday, GfK now own a controlling interest in ChartTrack, bringing the companies together under the new name GfK ChartTrack Limited. Fingers crossed this means we can start getting not only some decent European sales numbers, but also regular pan-European sales charts as well.

Nintendo Says DS Redesign Pics Are, Yes, 'Rumour & Speculation'

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on July 8, 2008

That DS redesign concept in the Disgaea DS ad sure is nice, isn't it? But is it real? Who knows. We have our doubts. Redesigning the exterior of a DS is an "easy" thing, but adding widescreen would create a 16:9/4:3 gulf in DS gaming that we just can't see Nintendo going for. As for the official word, Nintendo are saying it's "purely rumour and speculation". Which, hey, we knew already.

More characters join the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom fray! Previously, it was announced that the Capcom side was getting Street Fighter III's Alex and the Tatsunoko side was getting Gan-chan from anime Yatterman. The latest brawlers in this gaming characters versus anime character fight: Darkstalkers' Morrigan Aensland, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams' Soki, Hurricane Polymar and Golden Warrior Gold Lightan. As game site Arcade Renaissance points out, the game's button layout seems similar to the Sengoku Basara X one. Something to keep in mind as Japanese arcade location tests kick off this weekend! That, and the possibility of even more new characters.

Dick Smith Games Sale Comes Complete With Fluctuating Discounts

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 3:30 PM on July 8, 2008

dse_sale.jpgBattlefield 2142 for $10? It sounds crazy, but that's how much it's going for in Dick Smith's massive sale. If this wasn't reason enough to grab your wallet, pack some sandwiches and head down to your local DSE, the retailer had many other quality titles discounted by 50% or more.

However, according to EcoGamer, DSE has been less than consistent with its pricing:

At the same time as pleasing many bargain hunters I believe Dick Smith has also angered a lot of gamers by not keeping their prices consistent during the sale period. I believe it's the first time a store has changed prices on their games on a daily basis in several instances. Take Conan for example, it was just $25 at one point but then suddenly jumped to $50 shortly after, and now rests at $70.
A huge swing indeed, but it seems to me someone just got their new and old titles mixed up and simply made a correction... to the chagrin of bargain hunters.

Even with the discount confusion, I'm sure plenty of gamers got their fill of great games at even better prices.

Great bargains or great disaster? [EcoGamer, thanks Fredi]

Oh Look, Another Patent Lawsuit Filed Against Nintendo

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on July 8, 2008

Yes, another nutty lawsuit. This one gets the "nutty" tag because of the timeframes involved. A Mr. John R. Martin, from Illinois, claims that the Nintendo DS infringes upon a patent he holds for "touch screen and pointing device gaming technology", filed in August, 2005 (pictured). Only problem? The DS was released in 2004. Bonus problem? While his patent applies to a touch-screen gaming device, it's for a gambling device, one more concerned with GPS and gambling laws than with male cheerleading or phantom hourglasses.

Led by King Duvroc, he "wishes for everyone in the world to be happy" and "thinks it's Mardi Gras all year round". Duvroc has a daughter, Princess Bouquet. She loves science. And is trapped in a pot. Does Metal Gear Solid Need A Movie?

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on July 8, 2008

They're making a Metal Gear Solid movie. And since David Hayter knows both Hollywood as a big time script writer and Metal Gear Solid as the English language voice of Solid Snake, he's probably a good guy to ask about the movie version -- even if he's apparently not writing the movie. And what does David Hayter think?

Does it need a movie? No. Do people want to collect the money that would be made from a movie? Sure. [laughs] I think that any time that a property is as valuable as this one, they're going to do it. It's not a question of if there is a need for a movie, it's a question of how do they insure that the movie is good, and worth watching.

And how would Hayter make Metal Gear Solid a movie worth watching?

How's Wii Skate It? We Skate It To Find Out

We hope you're ready for a world in which all games are controlled with your feet, because following the success of Wii Fit and the welcoming of the game's Balance Board peripheral by third-party developers, it's only going to ramp up from here. Fortunately, in the case of the Skate It at least, playing games with your feet may not be such a bad thing. It has the potential to be about as awkward as any attempt to ride a skateboard, if it's your first time, but you might be surprised at how easily one can pull off nose manuals and nollie kickflips within minutes.

Normally, we'd expect to see a Flash-driven countdown clock to ratchet up the anticipation, but sadly we don't get one.

Hopefully, we'll get to play it at E3. Talons crossed!
