Balance Board Skateboard Add-on, Bwah?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on July 8, 2008
As posted earlier, Kotaku's own Mike "Michael" McWhertor was impressed with Skate It's straight forward incorporation of the Wii Balance Board. But for some, maybe just the regular Wii Balance Board isn't enough to get them in the mood for skating. Maybe they want something to sexy the board up. You know, like some sort of snap-on peripheral. Nothing's been announced by EA, but rumours persist Skate It will ship with something like that. When asked if such Balance Board peripheral exists, EA replied:
That's something I haven't heard. So... Our focus is just working with what is provided by Nintendo. So there's not an extra piece. You know, it's really about working with the Balance Board. So if you have one, this is another game you can play with it. It's not about fitness, it's about skateboarding and having fun.
There's a video after the jump. Watch it if you like.

I was thinking the same thing. Custom trucks, grip-tape, and decal accessories.

Until people stop buying them I suppose. Seriously though, I think that companies should really stop with this peripheral surge unless they are going to have a significant amount of use for them, without having to buy another peripheral for your peripheral. Games like Singstar, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band do this by planning to have future installments compatible with previous instruments not to mention that they all include DLC to extend the life of their game. Nintendo needs to do that a little more in my opinion.

Peripherals for peripherals. How far into the periphery can we go?

Nintendo is very crafty. $250 for a console (way cheap) but many games also have these add on peripherals that add up to big bucks. Kudos to them, just not my style.
In related news, the Best Buy in town had some Wii's this Sunday and people were going batshit insane over them and carrying them around the store clutched under arm. I saw one guy with them but they were mostly women in their thirties or 40s who also had a copy of Wii Fit. Look out for "Wii Fit Girl: Middle Ages" at a youtube near you.

So, with all this talk about skateboard this and skateboard that, when on Earth is SEGA going to port Top Skater to Wii?!
@Mutton-Chops: ROTFLMAO

I'm not much into skating games, but if I had a balance board I'd probably look into this game. Could be fun.

it would be cool to see a side-by-side of someone using the board while playing the game. One screen of the feet on the board and another of the screen play itself. I think that way we can get more of a feel of how the board actually interacts with the game.
Sux about not getting an actual skate board peripheral for it though. I think that more people would be willing to try that out.

I just got wii fit this morning, and i'm glad to see some alternative gameplay for the balance board. But if they don't make some kind of add on skateboard, i'm doing it myself.
Oh and in related news, there are Wii consoles on the north side of Indianapolis this morning at Target in nora and target in West Carmel.

@InvaderPhlegm: I wish they would let you use the arcade Top Skater board for this game. I loved that thing.

Hmm I'm glad they are supporting the peripherals...but is the Balance board generally available?

@Poochy: I try to provide feedback on a model that doesn't suit my needs but acknowledge that it works well and you mock that? I've read through your comments and it seems you've never had anything constructive to say and just try to draw humor (for own self?) out of your mockery.
I'm sure the winner of the Komment King contest will wield their hammer just and true.

@dArk_stAr: Not really applicable to the topic at hand, but nice to see another Indiana resident ;)
I'd love to see more games utilizing the balance board, it's a really interesting peripheral; skateboarding is a really fun start :)

@Yin: I also include various games that have Wiimote attachments and other peripherals. I'm really not bashing Nintendo. I respect the hell out of what they do and applaud them for taking the mystique out of gaming for the general public. Plus Zelda rules. I'm just saying they are crafty with how they make money. It's kinda like the micro-transaction thing.

@dArk_stAr: I was thinkiung the same thing, a cheap walmart skate deck (maybe a mini one just so it doesn't hang over the edge too much)acouple of clamps and some padding so the board doesn't get screwed up...how hard can it be?
