Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet Managing Producer Answers Questions
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on July 11, 2008
Kyle Shubel, Manager Producer on LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 plus "massive damage" and "giant enemy crabs" dude, answers a bunch of questions about a bunch of stuff. Shubel's an excitable guy, and his enthusiasm makes the clip enjoyable. We like his shirt slogan: "Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?" Yes, yes it does.

@Syphurous: I think he meant it more as a compliment than a idea stealing technique.
As in, "Wow, those guys did something really awesome, we should try and one up them and do something even more awesome."
Instead of, "Wow, those guys did something awesome, we should steal that idea and just throw it in our game."

"Hey those guys are doing something we're not, we should copy them" ( he said something about flying cars, & having to copy them )
This is why you see so many crap games, no one has a inch of self respect or creativity.
I find myself playing more and more indy games because thats the only place I can find some originality.

I didn't mean to insult him. I can't say I'm the living picture of health. I merely meant the camera shot was framed in an unflattering matter. He had some very interesting things to say, and his earnest passion for the industry made the video well worth the watch. Really, I meant no insult.

@Scazza: Also to add, incase you kids didn't realize, he works in the gaming industry, the same industry thats famous for its sterotypical overweight nerdy programmer guys. They can't all be Cliffy Bs, and I wouldnt want it anyway. These are the guys and gals that make the games that give you the ability to come online and whine or cry or piss on any game you dont agree with. Without them you would have to, you know... go out into the sun and stuff... Imagine the horror....

Right?
Not that this wasn't interesting -- he seems like a cool guy. Just not what I was expecting.

Lol, Kotaku posters are so harsh. Who gives a darn if the guys a little overweight? Anyways, it sounds like he's passionate at what he does and that's cool. I bet if more of the harsh Kotaku posters were trying to bring together LittleBigPlanet, then they'd gain some weight, too. Kudos to Kyle and keep doin' what ya love, man.

@MykalBloom: @Bugged?: @MadExponent: Wow, way to take the high road on that one. Its like every ****ing topic nowadays on kotaku starts with the same group of douchebags talking about ploughing jade or mocking the fat guy, seriously, how old are you kids? Why does mommy and daddy not monitor your internet? The way you acting it seems like you guys should be playing with some lego or sticklebricks, instead of spraying written diarrhea all over the internet.
As for the clip, I think this E3 is going to be pretty damn exciting, where hopefully some real meat can be shown on LBP.

It's always good to see people who are genuinely passionate about what they do up for small interviews like this. I really didn't learn a lot, but it's always good to see that people are in the industry who aren't necessarily the face of their company, but still able to come out and say what they love about what they do without selling their product.
Hearing that sentiment about "seeing your game on the shelves" being one of the more rewarding parts of working in the industry is something I'm hearing more and more. Even on the games that people consider awful, sometimes having that in your mind that someone is really proud to just see their work being put into the hands of players makes you think a bit more about what goes into it. At least it does for me.

In before the super-model-esque ranks of Kotaku commenters make fun of this guy's physique.
I trust him. He wears his gamer pedigree on his sleeve within the first minute, and I enjoy it when people working for a specific publisher acknowledge that their competitor's games exist. He's charismatic, and his off-the-cuff anecdotes brought me into the video.
As you were, commenters!

Seriously though making fun of gamers for being overweight just goes to prove how far we've moved away from where gaming started.
On topic though, its always great to see the industry people so jazzed about their jobs I just really wish he would have talked a little about what was on the screen behind him.

@Amazon_Chris: I only hate the fat people who are very obese, and fat deliberately because they eat crap and don't take any care of themselves, which causes them to go on disability or get diabetes and have tax-paid medicare help them, all because they couldn't be sensible. But I truly hate the parents who let these things happen to their children. People who're genetically chubby or have things such as a hypothyroid I don't hate or anything. My ex had a hypothyroid and it sucked for her.

I'm not it does necessarily make it expected, Bash. I think expecting the unexpected makes one more prepared mentally to deal with (whatever that might be in context) with the event/thing, but it doesn't identify it before it comes. Lacking that, I think it remains unexpected.
