Mega Man 9 IS Coming To 360, PS3
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:40 AM on July 11, 2008
It is, it isn't, it is, it isn't...sheesh. Yes, it's been confirmed that Mega Man 9 will be making its way to the Xbox 360 and PS3. Despite WiiWare-only claims - from Capcom, the scamps - to the contrary. Above is the closing screen from the game's first trailer, showing the necessary details. Thanks for the confusion! Perhaps as a tonic for your Mega Man dizziness, they've also announced that Mega Man 1 & 2 will be appearing on the North American Virtual Console, and appearing "soon". Full (and excellent) trailer's after the jump.

Heh. So, PSN it is? Was going to happily purchase this on the Wii, but since I prefer the pad on the PS3...so be it.
Unless, you know, Capcom come out and say that the trailer itself is fan made...or something like that.

Too many trolls here really, CAPCOM is not lazy but of course you wouldn't understand because if it has not shiny graphics then the hell with the game.
Miss it, still many people will buy it and show CAPCOM they made the right choice.

Yeah, they're gonna make a ton because the game's likely taken a twentieth of the time and effort it would take to make a modern-featured MM game, even just in 2D.
Not that I don't approve of keeping your overhead low. Just not so sure I feel so great about keeping your overhead low this way.

@jbiller: I agree. This is a big letdown, I was expecting something like Megaman 8: beautifully drawn and animated sprites.
But seems that Capcom covered their laziness throwing the word "retro"... "Look, we haven't put any real effort on it, we just want you rmoney. But hey, look at this side: IT IS RETRO!! See? Looks like the game you loved on Nes!".
It's just a shame that so many people actually bought that idea...

It would be better if they took the old school pixel aesthetic but increased the frame rate so you got this combination of old school antiquated look but with much better modern animation. As it stands... well, I played this game already a very very long time ago and don't plan to do it again for $10.

I would have liked to see them really take advantage of the hardware while maintaining the 8-bit sprites and colors, but I can't really fault them for "keeping it real."
One odd thing, though. Doesn't it feel a little strange to be celebrating the return of a game that was dogged by indistinguishable sequels on the NES?

I really think in time this game will show up on both PSN and Live at a later date. I just think Capcom wants to see how MM9 sells on WiiWare first. So this will let Capcom see how many people really want games from Capcom to be made for the Wii.

I would actually still get this one on the Wii. I don't know how HD they can really make this, and I don't like the PS3's or 360's dpads, so I guess I'll get the Wii version. Huh. Until now, I thought the Wii would always get the short end of the stick when it came to multiplat games. Guess I was wrong.
Oh, and I don't give a shit about achievements. Real Megaman players make their own. But, if there are achievements awarded for not using special weapons in levels or against bosses, that would be pretty cool.

Maybe it's possible to translate the true "Mega Man experience" to a newer, shinier modern presentation, but I (and I think many others) feel that that hasn't happened. While the SNES and PSX entries were nice enough, they didn't quite feel the same spiritually. Inafune himself has stated that rewinding to the same place they were when they made those classic six NES games has put him more in the mode of creating a classic Mega Man game. From what I can see, that looks like it's the case.
This and Tales of Symphonia 2 are my Fall.

Why can't a Wii Megaman game look like this, and play like however you want it to play?
Many fans consider Super Mario Bros the best game ever, but you don't see Nintendo going back to 8-bit sprites and repetitive backgrounds, do you?
Ashurahori
Zerbrechen
Posted 11:47 AM 11/7/08
@Ashurahori: Because it's not in a way that you like it's "improper"?
Few companies even think of doing something like this... why? Because it's ugly?
Or is it because- at least for Megaman, most people seem to think 2 was the series' highest point?
Maybe you prefer HD sprites, but limiting what's "the right thing to do" to one path only perpetuates stagnation.
Besides, you've got to admit that, in the current state of video games, it's actually innovative to use NES sprites when everyone else is using high-quality ones.
In fact, to those saying "Oh, this is just a fan hack, basically" and "Capcom's lazy"- really? Have fan hacks reached the level where the only way professional companies can compete is by making the graphics better? Have they surpassed the quality of Mega Man 2? Because many of you seem to be doubting that we'll get an authentic, quality entry in the Megaman series based on the graphics alone.
Go screw, please.

The only thing that bugs me is that they din't create any new sprites for the game. It looks like they have a bunch of the old assets and used them for this game. Wich they did for 1 through 6 but at least you had new dynamics and levels. This looks a lot like 5 or 6. @LionheartAce: Because, as much as 8-bit might be all the rage nowadays, the game simply looks ugly. Yes, I understand that it's an artistic style, but making a true blue NES game nowadays seems simply... useless. People have said that Megaman 2 had great gameplay, but I just don't see it. When I played it, I had to align myself with awkward jumps in order to be able to shoot at enemies. The effects are quite limited, as we can see here. I might be missing something crucial, but I'd say people who never played a Megaman game will be quite confused.
Lemme give you an example. Nintendo made the Zelda: Four Swords game for the Gamecube awhile ago. It featured GBA graphics, but with some beauty included, effects, some shine to make it look prettier. It looked pretty good. The 4-player mechanic meant you NEEDED 4 players to actually make the game fun, but it was a good game.
Check the new Wario Land. It's exactly like the old games, but it's got fully drawn levels, so people know they went the extra mile to add a little something to the game.
Look at Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD. An old game, released as a great-looking one.
Why can't Inafune make an 8-bit game with current technology, and add in stuff that we couldn't even dream of putting in 8-bit games way back? Why can't he improve upon the formula, make the game LOOK GOOD, instead of making Megaman look like the bald midget on the boxart? Why can't he make the guy friggin' shoot up or down? Limiting gameplay for the sake of "the experience", isn't my idea of enjoying a classic.
Inafune is taking a very illogical step. There's a reason Ikaruga doesn't look like Xevious. There's a reason Nintendo have never released a new 8-bit Super Mario Bros again, even though many still herald it as the greatest game of all time, and its gameplay is still proven to work quite well.
Because we're on 2008. We no longer need to rely on 8-bit graphics. We can make something play good, and LOOK good.

Mega man, the character, the whole series needs to be put out to pasteur. '8-bit' has gone the way of the dinosaur so there's really no need for this now. This would be far better served on DS and Wii, even possibly a PSP than PS3 or 360. What would make it more atractive is include the entire series this, all with updated graphics and call it an anniversary game or something.

Those suggesting Capcom is "being lazy" with this entry: try making an 8-bit title with your own team of twenty . . . and also make it compelling.
True, I haven't played Mega Man 9 to know it's not up to par with the best in the series . . . but neither have any of you to know it's an uninspired rehash.
I'm very excited. The height of technology can make for excellent art . . . but I've found that quite often the height of art isn't completely aligned with that of technology. I think Iga knows what he's doing, and don't think it's just about money to him.

The former is a downloadable title done entirely at Inti Creates. It will sell for $10.

Now i'm a firm believer that 8 was the best megaman. I have it it's the shit. I also have most of the other megamans and i put x5 as second. While the 8-bit thing is kind of a cool novelty i would prefer mm8's art style rather than anything serious.
And depending on the game. Graphics do > gameplay. Some games just entirely revolve around being pretty to look at and fun to watch art direction and quality of art is massively important and seriously underated in a games importance. Would you enjoy oblivion nearly as much without audio and looking like Adventure for the atari does? I wouldn't.

@Ashurahori: 1- It's not; However, the creative direction that Inafune picked is for his personal fervor, dictates that he wants the game to play on your nostalgia and how freaking hard Megaman 2 & 3 were.
2 - Again, it's based on his creative direction.
I don't mean to direct this in a mean fashion. I was just saying it's a creative direction and won't deter the game from playing how HE wants it to play.

2- How can making a game look good be any detrimental to how good that game is going to be?

Nice job giving Nintendo the shaft yet again Capcom. Wii owners plunk down oogles of cash for RE4: Wii Edition and RE: Umbrella Chronicles, giving your precious stock a nice little bump. So how do you repay them? By giving RE5 to Sony and Microsoft, with no version, even a gimped version, for Wii. You give Microsoft a brand new Bionic Commando, and a revamped classic version in ReArmed, which has "Wiimake" written all over it.
Now you give Wii owners Mega Man 9, in all its retro glory, only to pull out the rug from under Wii owners feet once again.
Sure, maximize profits, reach the most people. I get it.
But as a Nintendo fan, I gotta say, I'm not feeling the love Capcom.
For what it's worth, I am totally buying this game. For WiiWare in case it wasn't obvious.

If one pauses at the right moments in the video, one can see the lower halves of the robot masters colored in, though still somewhat transparent, before they become full silhouettes. I discovered this purely by accident.

@Ashurahori: You raise very good points, and understandably. I'm not refuting that I wouldn't like some polished visuals myself. I just hope I don't sound like I'm arguing, I'm not.
My guess is he just wanted to gauge the reaction. He's already redone a game on PSP, which by the way was good with an interesting art direction (Chibi?). He's either in a retro mood or he just felt like experimenting again. Or he had about a month to put together a game.
Like it or not it's the final product. Personally I would have loved to see it with hand drawn animations like Wario Land. It's a toss up though. Unless someone interviews him about his decision we'll likely never know.
Here's hoping Kotaku does an interview and asks that very question.

Honestly...I feel this too much of a cop-out on Capcom's part. I mean Mega Man 8 was a masterpiece imo, I love that game with a passion. They should of touched on that with new technology it could have been even better, going back to 8-bit with some new bells and whistles and really taking a step backward in development and it's pretty much Capcom playing on the Mega Man name than making a high quality game. Don't get me wrong I love all the original Mega Man games I own them in their original cartridges still, but...something just seems off.

@Sammo21: It could simply be market research. For all we know, Capcom polled fans and asked what their favorite Mega Man style was. It does seem 8-bit Mega Man fans outnumber non-fans here at least.
I wonder how many PS3/360 owners just flipped their opinion of MM9 after this announcement... hmmm.

@ChadWardenn: How was 8 the worst? Seriously. It looked good had good level design fun weapons.
@Zerbrechen: Think of it this way. The higher a game gets in complexity the harder it is to make it good. Some things can be so deliciously simple but have myriads of strategy behind them. Chess. You wanna know my 2 favorite games? Doom and Ikaruga. I love simple fast paced no-fuckinground games. When a genre is stripped to it's bare simplicity it's ALWAYS at it's best. When you make it over complicated it becomes difficult to manage and maintain the same quality. Imagine this do you play better with a 5 string guitar or a 12 string? In case some people were lacking points for these simple graphics being better than more complex ones that's one. But on the other hand if we didn't move up to more complex titles we wouldn't have the MGS series always pushing limits and being as unique as it is. Or games like Morrowind and Oblivion or hell Fallout. There's a reason i play pen and paper rpg's. This game would not be right with such simple gameplay and great animated sprites. It wouldn't feel the same. As graphics have evolved so have platformers look at the Sonic series. Some games have manage to keep the same simplicity but make the transfer to 3d elegantly like Mario did. I have to tell you guys the art of game design is difficult and by limiting themselves like this they aren't tempted to do something like Sonic Heroes.

I really fail to see what you're trying to get at.
Also, you put up a video of Mega Man 8 earlier praising it and saying you've (obviously) never played it. 8 was by far the worst in the entire series of games. I'd rather play X7 than 8, it was that bad. 8 was the nail in the coffin that killed the original series 12 years ago.

@Ashurahori: Yes, they could have added effects (they'd look nice, too), and they could have made the sprites beautiful (I love the way Wario Land looks), and, yes, they could have added 8-way aiming (Metroid did it!)- but they don't necessarily have to.
One of the main aims of making a game, other than supplying "fun" or procuring huge loads of money is to make it "good". Some people consider Megaman 2 to have "perfect gameplay" (not me, though it is fun), even though there's no 8-way aiming and it looks "ugly"- to them, the inability to aim upwards not only doesn't get in the way of the fun, but actually adds to the experience, with the series' reputation of being incredibly hard, but incredibly fun. You can't say a gameplay feature is necessarily needed unless its inexistence actually hinders the gameplay, and many (based on the intense, burning love that MM2 invokes) don't think it does.
You also have to consider that, for some series, avoiding the cutting edge of technology actually helps preserve its charm and quality- Sonic, Contra and Megaman, to name a few. They tried a 3d Megaman, it wasn't as good as MM2; they tried to continue the series on the Playstation, no comparison to MM2, they continue to spin off, but still no luck. People like to suggest that companies try something different- well here it is. If you don't like it, hope it's not successful- then maybe they'll come around to what you want, but if you're in the minority, why should they care what you think? When the vast majority of old school Megaman lovers orgasmed at the thought of a "new MM2", why shouldn't they try it?
You've also got to consider that we live in a different "era" then that of MM2 or even 8- is Wario Land better looking at $50? Yes. Is Megaman more likely to do much better at $10? F#%k yes.

I knew it had to happen. I couldn't take it anymore. That robot master had the best power ever, and Mega Man couldn't get it. Getting jipped on the Top Spin in 3 was NOTHING compared to getting the power from Astro Man. Being able to do Astro Crush compared to the ability to suck the souls of anything within earshot? Lame.

OoT was $50 when it first came out, not $10. They've made all of their retail money already. Megaman 9 is all new. Sure prices all around (not just for this game) are debatable (is Gyrostarr worth the $7? Lostwinds is 3 hours long, is it worth 10?), but for a game that will most likely be incredibly fun, it seems, at the very least, that you're asking too much.

Would new graphics have improved the game? Not for me.).
IMO the best FF was 6 (3 in the US). As nice as 7 was with it's "immersive" cut-scenes, IMO it can't hold a candle to 6 and it's far more immersive story and gameplay.

I am happy with the direction that Inafune chose to go with this one, from 8-bit, to multi-platform, to leaderboards.
The man's no slouch as a producer, and I'll bet that, aside the legitimate backing of doing something with the old medium, getting back to basics, giving fans (a vocal portion of which have usually claimed that Mega Man 2 is the best of the original series) what they say they loved, Mega Man 9 will serve as something more.
MM9 will give Inafune what Miyamoto and Kojima have and what Jade Raymond and Igarashi wish they had:
Leverage.
full generation sales numbers for a digital distribution product? If that doesn't give him a big sign to point to and say "SEEE!" when it comes time to let him choose the next big budget Mega Man production ("Legends" with the Lost Planet engine?), I don't know what will.

Normally, I don't comment on much anymore. But I think this time I'll make an exception...
Honestly, the people hating on the 8-bit style are baffling the living hell out of me. The only thing I can figure out is either:
1) You just don't like the "retro" style or the old Mega Man games, period.
or
2) You were introduced to video games well after the 8-bit era of gaming, and therefore don't understand it or it's significance for many gamers that have been around that long.
First of all, you need to stop trying to compare this game to todays standards and understand that this game was not designed for you, but for the legions of fans of the classic 8-bit Mega Man games that appeared on the NES when we were kids.
It was a design choice chosen by Capcom because this series will not sell to anyone BUT those fans(even with updated graphics) and they knew that when they made it.
Secondly, that being said you also have to understand that this series as a whole was built on these graphics. This is what those fans remember and love and Capcom was gracious enough to accommodate. Which, to be honest, business-wise is a genius move.
Was Mega Man 7 a good game? Most of us would agree that yes it was. I actually liked the gameplay and graphics for it. It was an interesting update, but I still prefer the older games.
Was Mega Man 8 a good game? Most of us will say no. The graphics were waaaay to kiddy, the sound effects and music were awful and there were points in the game I just wanted to throw the controller across the room because of how awful the gameplay was.
Mega Man 1-6 was what made the series popular to begin with. Those graphics, that kind of music, that gameplay... that's what we want. Not more updates like Mega Man 8. If the game just doesn't appeal to you because of the style the game was made in, then just move on. It wasn't meant for you anyway. There are plenty of us that will buy it and love it.

I just don't get people calling capcom lazy. This is an extremly risky move that noone has really done before (though admittingly they're not risking a whole lot of money). I'm sure that for just a little more money they could have made adequate modern graphics, it wouldn't be a huge difference for the gameplay programmers and a lot could have been reused from MM8 and they would have a lot fewer people complaining. But they choose to make it a fullblown nesgame because it's awesome and it's what the fans want deep down inside; and I'm pretty sure some of the developers really wanted to make nesgames as well; I know I do.
I hope it does well and open up for other retroish titles.

It's not about those things its about being right royally ripped off. This game required low development costs and yet still gets a rip off price tag.

I dont have a 360 per se, but I have an Xbox 360 controller I use regularly for PC games (mainly when I used to play FFXI and now emulated games). And after countles hours with the thing while playing 2D platform games I've come to this conclusion:
The Xbox 360's D-Pad sucks BALLS for 2D games. I strongly sugest not getting this game for the 360. Sorry but that controller kicks ass except for that D-pad and this game does ask for it, no no, demands you use it. Its either PS3 or Wii for me, haven't made up my mind.

The 8bit style is a bonus for me, since I never felt that the SNES MM games really had the same "tight" control. The NES versions, to me, always felt rock solid. Tight and speedy, which was something Capcom was known for. The 16-bit games always felt a bit floaty to me, although Rockman and Forte came pretty damn close.
As for the choice to make the game 8-bit style, why not? They specifically mention the "fans" asking for it, right? So Capcom whips off a "true sequel" that costs them nothing as compared to today's games. They release it on all the systems they possibly can, maximizing exposure, and only charge a 1/5 of what most games cost nowadays.
Capcom wins, the hardcore fans win, and maybe someone who never played the originals discovers how awesome they were, and goes back for the other schmillion original games.

I'll still probably get it for the Wii since the game was built for a two-button controller.

Oh, by the way, I always add a wierd dream, that someday, the SNES would come back and current gen producers would make new games for the system. This is not quite what I was hoping for, but its preety close. I hope this "trend" picks up with full steam, I wanna see some more new old games.

(unlike most hardcore blind fanboys) Im glad this one is confirmed for everybody. Gamers should not be deprived of stuff like Megaman just because of their console choices. Everyones happpy, Capcom does tons of money, rejoice!
Im just really, really curious what theyre gonna put up for extra DLC and at what price...

@Kazama Sogetsu: 8-bit spritey style games do not mean "lazy" they mean "small dev team" and "decreased dev costs" and "low overhead" and "lower price point" and "more likely to be profitable" and "profitable cheap things get sequels with higher budgets" and "mega man 10 requires a classic controller" so please, pretty please, get over it and try it. we have NO IDEA what's in store for us. you haven't seen any stage bosses or weapons!
@bobtheduck: I'm sorry the bad Nintendo touched you, really.
This RULES.

Am I alone to not be excited about this game? I haven't even played Mega Man beyond the 4th game and I only played the first X-game for SNES. The platforming was always solid, but the innovation and music steadily got worse with each new title. The series reached its zenith with Mega Man 3 imo, so I don't see any reason to be excited by this.

yeah, that's it Capcom, stay true to yourself, make exclusivity statements and then fuck those suckers over who, although a bit cautious, wanted to give you another chance believing you
and while at it; keep releasing more of your cool retro/arcade remakes for HD consoles only
talks here about "hd graphics" just shows on what level some of these whiney HD fanboys are, seriously HD GRAPHICS on an 8-BIT MEGAMAN?!

@Kenninator:
So this means you haven't played any expansion to any game.
Oh and not only that, you only played megaman 1, and skipped the rest of the series, as it's just the same.
Well that's sad for you.

@Ashurahori:
I'm sorry but Megaman 2 is probably one of the greatest games ever created. If you complain over Megaman 9's graphics then you are nothing but a graphics whore. The gameplay is perfectly okay, in Megaman games you have more control over the character than in MANY of the new games. Sure, there's an aiming issue, but then again, you get different weapons for shooting enemies above you. The controls of Megaman is perfect if you don't agree with this, then I'm really interested in what of the controls which makes the game unplayable. I would also like to know which game has better controls.
Don't complain over Inafune's step, if you don't like this game and want something which looks more beautiful, just play the Megaman ZX games. Both ZX and Advent are great games which I highly recommend.
The music and effects the 2A03 chip produces are so great, and melodies are more in focus than hefty samples.
The first time I played a Megaman game I was anything but confused, so don't make things up.

I've got to say. I'm a little heartbroken. But i can't really figure out why. I guess part of me still associates Megaman with the NES exclusively and seeing a classic megaman title on a nintendo console makes me tear up a little.
Oh well. Achievements at least.

The 8-bit graphics are no problem for me, I have been playing the MM Collection in PS2 all the week, f****ng GutsMan stage.
About gameplay, if they are aiming for MM2, then will not be slide nor Megabuster... from the trailer, it appears to be true.
Then, in the trailer it was Rush and Beat.
So, we won't have slide/buster but have Beat!!!
The slide allowed interesting layouts in the stages and better tactics to kill the Bosses, the buster... All of us play Megaman games with the B(NES), Y(SNES), Square(PSX/PS2) button pressed all the time.
@ALL MEGAMAN 8 HATERS: I understand your hate, the dubbing in MM8 is the worst of all games I've played, makes almost unvereable to play the game. Also some gameplay elements(JUMP!JUMP!SLIDE!SLIDE!) were annoying.
But the rest of the game is a precious rendering of the Megaman Universe, the designs of the bosses, and the stages are very good, the music, changed a bit from the classic themes, but I consider it good also. The anime cutscenes (destroyed with the english dub) are a dream for a Megaman fan, I just wanted a series with that style.
Sorry for all of those that not played the Japanese version of Rockman 8 -Metal Heroes- and its incredible intro "Electical Comunication", posibly my first Nerdgasm!.

What have you done, Capcom? You've resurrected the imbeciles who throw out the 'Gameplay > Graphics" argument? What have you done!? WE WILL ALL BURN IN THE FIRES OF THEIR STUPIDITY!
IT BURNS...
Not realizing...
That's it's better to have both than argue over which one is better...
