Some Guy Went and Built a Sentry Gun
Posted by Owen Good at 2:00 AM on July 14, 2008
No, he didn't assemble it by whacking a large wrench against a pile of parts either. But this guy is a serious engineer, cooking up an auto-fire paintball sentry gun. And although this isn't necessarily gameplay footage, you can watch as some poor test subject wearing a BMX helmet gets pounded in several tests. So I'm gonna say its germane because, shit, it's Sunday, and sentries are a treasured friend/loathsome foe in Team Fortress 2, Perfect Dark, and other games. And this is PC gaming, if getting shot to shit by a PC is a game.
Note that this weapon is not being fired by remote control. It's recognising moving objects and firing on them automatically. The distraction test is a pretty good measure of its abilities.
Of course, having the laptop that operates it right next to it probably would not do well in a real firefight. Maybe it'd be a good burglar-blaster, but then, forget your keys, step in the door, and you're taking a paintbath in the living room.

Nice little project. It does seems very simple, just scanning any movement at all, a bit like Eyetoy. There are standard off-the-shelf free APIs that allow you to do this kind of thing with any cheap webcam.
Would be more interesting if it compared an image of the scene empty with the current scene, and if it kept track of recent targets and where they disappeared behind cover. Wouldn't take much code to make that happen, and you'd get a more effect sentry.

I think the flame thrower would work better because you woulden't need a scale you could just see how burned there skin is to see how much damage they or if they died then well ya know there out of the match, well I guess one problem with the flame thrower would be the whole disfigured and or death thing I guess that woulden't be good.

@lightweaponx: Only the cost of the paintball gun, mount, and laptop. The coding he did to make it work is probably worth a lot though.
He is trying to sell them, didn't specify his market though... As you can gain from the video it tracks motion to a certain sensitivity. If you look through the website it tells you that if you moved real slow, at a steady pace, and didn't make any mistakes you could get by it. He also says you can equip it with an infra red sensor so that it can work in the dark. Scary shit.

Wow, very impressive as others have said, and I'm sure it will be even more terrifying as he improves the software. I liked the nervous laughter at one point as he's crouching behind that barrier, probably thinking to himself, "Damn, this is eerie - I really feel like I'm actually in TF2 now."
I bet his neighbors love him too (house splattered with paint, barriers and trampoline in the yard, driving a jeep all over his lawn).
the-hypnotoad
DaveKap
Posted 4:49 AM 14/7/08
@Witzbold: I was questioning the safety factor too until the final clip of the jeep showed someone else was obviously up on the roof to ensure nobody was around to get shot.
However, I personally question the sanity of anyone who purposefully gets hit with paintballs. Considering he mounted a camera to the tip of the gun, there was no need for paintballs to track accuracy or, I dunno, actually shoot and hurt the guy. But hey, that's the kind of crazy you get when you get military family crazy. ;-) (Not really a bad crazy... just the kind of crazy where you hope you don't get on their bad side...)

Imagine if a cult/terror group/militia got hold of three or four of these. The ATF would not likely be happy.
On the conspiracy flipside, it'd be easy to mount these near where a government wouldn't want people to approach or congregate. Pepper-spray paintballs to keep the insurrection down.
Hell, it'd be pretty easy to mount several of these on a pickup truck and have "fun" on the Interstate.

You guys who are all like "oh noes!" should realise that implementing something like this is trivial. If the US military wanted to implement an autonomous turret which would fire at any moving object, they would have. The problem isn't building the thing, it's keeping it from shooting friendlies.
Consider if you have a base to defend. Are you going to surround it with auto turrets and have everyone go to sleep or are you just gonna have a few guys stay up, who won't be fooled by slow moving enemies?

Calavera302
Posted 10:07 AM 14/7/08
This is why I got into computer engineering.
With a little work, this could be implemented on an ARM7 or ARM9 core, running embedded linux or QNX, or even a DSP if you know what you're doing. There are open source image and video libraries that provide functionality to do just this kind of image tracking.
If anyone else is interested, check out the OpenCV computer vision libraries, and various methods of Blob Tracking (which is what it looks to me like this thing is doing). The algorithms are relatively simple when using a fixed camera and stationary background (sadly, mounting one of these on a moving vehicle would be a much larger undertaking).
Still, it's one hell of an achievement to do all of this on a shoestring budget, and in your free time. (Since generally, having the know-how to do something like this means you have a job, which takes up all of your time, preventing you from doing things like this).
