Ed Boon: We Scrapped Mortal Kombat 8
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:20 AM on July 18, 2008
At last year's Midway Gamers Day, Mortal Kombat co-creator and series overlord Ed Boon talked up the then-unnamed eighth entry in the franchise. Boon described Mortal Kombat 8 at the time as "very dark, serious" and "gritty" take on the series, a back to basics reboot that was free of "vibrant, saturated colours". It was said to be heavily inspired by the look of Gears of War.
Obviously, that didn't quite happen; Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe did. Boon said that the down and dirty MK8 was scrapped when the DC Comics deal solidified.
While MK Vs. DCU was met with mixed results, it wasn't an unexpected by the MK team. Frankly, we were pleasantly surprised by the game — despite our very much looking forward to the team's previous vision — and think that will show when we post our impressions of the Midway fighter later today.

Mortal Kombat doesn't need a reboot. It simply needs to be booted... out. Forever.
Who the hell buys these games?

WHY?! That would of been awesome. I know most games now I have the whole "dark and gritty" feel, but would it not suite Mortal Kombat? Its a game about violently beating your opponent to death in the most gruesome way possible! But instead they added Superman, removed gore, and removed fatalities. Yeah, the only good thing thats coming out of this is you get to beat the shit out of Superman, and who doesn't want to do that?

@CancerMan: You do know Sega is behind Virtua Fighter 5, right? Many of their games are questionable in terms of quality, but Sega can still do it's fair share of decent games here and there. Worst example to use.

Wow. Stop paying attention and you miss a lot!
MK1: Wahaha! Blood in a video game! This is crazy! (well ok, sweat in the one I rented, lol)
MK2: Huh. Well, this works.
MK3: Meh. Looks like they jumped the shark already...

I actually am a fan of MortalKombat. I've played/own them all. part 7 really wasnt tooo bad. it could have been better if they had only spent more time on it. but in the age of updates and patches anything can turn out decent. except if it has a sega name attatched.
It was a bit heart-breaking when ed poon said Armageddon would mark the end of the series' characters. And now to hear he was actually putting some thought into part8 and then had it scrapped for MK vs DC... it's just tough to digest. i cant see myself picking that one up.

@Archaotic: Don't knock the style that Epic has created with Gears of War. It suits the game very well, and part of its success is due to its artistic presentation.
Using it for UT3, well, that's another story...

That is my position.
After this Teen rated garbage, hopefully they'll do just that.

Honestly, making Mortal Kombat with a GoW style would be pretty nice. Get rid of the stupid techno-rave moves that they always have, and develop something fresh. It always had a lame-ass cartoony feel to it, and that just needs to change.
Make the fighters look bad-ass, develop a better storyline, actually give the game some sort of dignity, and it would do just fine.

*Sigh* Here we go again. There is really nothing that can be taken seriously with Mortal Kombat to begin with, much less to make it more darker or grittier, without becoming more laughable. Man, the MK crew are backwards. How about fixing, among many things, your stiff, dial-a-combo fighting system in an effort to at least attempt to join the ranks of the more respected fighters out there, and not worry about stylistic changes that have nothing to do with improving MK's generic...everything. What are these people thinking?

I thought this was a joke for quite awhile after it was announced...I mean, it's a little hard to believe.
Of course, I know now that it's real and having seen some of the videos out there it really seems like they're heading in a good direction.
Things like this that come out of left field can usually go either one of two ways:
1) It can suck just as bad (or worse) as everyone expected
or
2) It can be a surprisingly good game despite what people expected
Who here honestly thought Mario Kart would become what it is today when they first heard of it back in the SNES days?

@gameware: Tobias isn't with the team any more.
When he was doing "story" work and character design, all was well and all we fanboys had to think about was: "How cool would Street Fighter vs MK be?". Not that what he has done since was any good(read: Tao Feng).
Those days are dead and Ed Boon stuck around to help Midway ensure that MK died of exsanguination. Bastards.
I can't wait to see this game loading up the "discount" bin at Walmarts everywhere within 6-9 months of it's release.

I would have much preferred if they went back to the original formula of MK; but just spent some real effort & resources into making it good again.
That means no "custom" fatalities, no cheezy, clunky animations, no shovelware.
back to the basics. make chars have meaning & personality like they used to; & DON'T COMPROMISE on the gore/fatalities/grittiness/story.
Look at Street Fighter 4, they did it right. That's what MIDWAY has to do if they want to revive the golden days of MK. A lot of effort & resources & a strong purpose of reviving the original vision of the golden days of MK.
MK vs. DC i probably wont buy. It doesn't seem like a Marvel vs. Capcom; I have reservations about how well i think it will turn out.

Ok would people understand, don't bloody study games, play them for the fun of it, and MK games aren't sold on their story lines mostly, exception of shaolin monks, but they are sold on the fact that you can bash your opponent to death in multitudes of bloody ways.
I liked the last MK, could change a few things, i didn't really like the kreate-a-fatality idea, bring back the normal fatalities, but people your all missing the point of the games.
To let people know who don't know, there have been more then 7 MK games, there have been side stories and other versions.
With Mk vs DC, i agree it shouldn't really happen because ones about stopping criminals the other is about saving the realms and while your at it why don't you rip your opponents head off with their spine still attached.
If you got the game for the reason it was sold for, you wouldn't be stopping and examining colours. If you did actually play the last game there was bright colours in there, its just not as common as the dark grittiness because its a game about death and destruction, how can you have rainbow streamers going everywhere when your trying to rip a heart out.
I would welcome a new MK, like I would probably get MK vs DC, if not just borrow it out to see what it is like, could be good, could be bad.
