Killzone 2 Online Multiplayer: 'Fast Action! Lots of Explosions!'
Posted by Maggie Greene at 3:20 AM on July 18, 2008
![]()
After a slight delay due to internet issues in the prior presentation, a pack of media people shuffled into a little room to hear all about Killzone 2. Guerilla Games' managing director, Hermen Hulst, looked slightly horrified that the horde of journalists had left the two women in the room to sit on the floor ('Someone please get her a chair!'), but Kotaku writers getting stuck on the floor be damned, the show will go on! Eric Boltjes — senior online game developer — launched into a presentation and explanation of Killzone 2 online multiplayer's unique features and mechanics. After, of course, a nice video showing ... fast action, and lots of explosions! Boltjes underscored the fact that everything we watched was shot in real time on the PS3, and everything still looked nice even with 32 players in a game. We got a long laundry list of features and mechanics, which all seemed to come back to one word, 'customised.' For more from the presentation, hit the jump.
Boltjes laid out four goals for the game: 'everyone can enjoy Killzone 2 online,' 'play just the way you like it,' 'inspiring team play,' and 'create community beyond the game.'
Under the 'everyone can enjoy Killzone 2 online' category, Boltjes mentioned they wanted the hardcore and uh, less hardcore audiences to be happy and have fun, and noted a few features. The quick join feature will ensure that players can just hop into a game suitable for their ability level, but pickier players will be able to search for specific criteria before joining a game. The game will feature a 'slow introduction,' working up to advanced features; the advanced features will hopefully keep the hardcore audience chipper while not demoralising those who aren't ready for a really steep learning curve. Along with that, there will be transparency in the progression of the game, with twelve military ranks to progress through as you play the game (unlocking more features along the way), with an additional 46 badges and medals to be won for completing specific goals. Stats junkies will also be able to track 'over 100 statistics' regarding their progress and performance.
Boltjes seemed very proud of the 'play just the way you like it' features, which meant customise, customise, customise (within reason). Players will be able to select from six badges; each badge has a primary and a secondary ability. Decide you're really more of a medic-engineer than just a medic? Combine the two to take the medic's primary badge and the engineer's secondary badge (and vice versa if you decide to play as an engineer-medic). Custom games will allow players to select everything from the maps played, types of missions, weapons available, types of badges allowed, and variable settings (how long it takes to revive a player, how long it takes to set/defuse an explosive, etc.)
Under 'inspiring team play,' Boltjes discussed the benefits of having a squad, including the ability to see the stats of other squad members, a squad-only headset channel, and a 'spawn on squad leader' feature. Also under the spawning mechanics is the ability to cycle through available spawn points and check out what's going on in real time. Dynamic missions will also allow several missions to be selected for a game, with another mission starting after one objective has been won (there is also the option to switch in the middle of a round). There can be four members per squad and eight squads per faction.
Boltjes finished up by discussing the clan system and how they want to 'create community beyond the game.' Clans can support up to 64 players, and clan vs. clan matches can handle 16 on each side. Clan matchups will feature a 'valour' betting system, with winner takes all of the predetermined 'valour' bet. It is possible to run out of valour, but by participating in entry fee-free competitions, clans can rebound from a lack of valour. Clan tournaments can be set up in a tier-based system, with a maximum of 256 clans. On the issue of community more broadly, Boltjes talked about the leaderboards — including individuals, friends, clans, and clan member stats — that can be sorted on an all-time, daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The Killzone 2 website was also brought out as a more in-depth companion to everything available in game.
During the Q&A, a few more things came up: no, graphics were not downsized for multiplayer (and the game did look nice, at least the parts we were shown). A public beta will be open later this year, and they will be closely monitoring for exploits and vulnerabilities. Killzone 2 will also be functioning on a global server system. Further, more single player news will be out later this year, and while they have some interesting ideas to go with Sony's Home, "we're not discussing it right now".

@Candlejack: DING DING DING YOU ARE A WINNER.
Almost overnight, the entire 360 forum became BFFs with Square Enix, which really caught me off-guard because I thought prior to E3, JRPG's just aren't "cool" to play anymore.
GEE I WONDER WHY THAT IS?
I just hope people aren't hating the house that Final Fantasy built because they did go multi-plat. That would be the making of an uber-fanboy.

@Jimbuck: What happened to chivalry? Well maybe:
Starbucks, bluetooth headseats, "Mac guy", GPS navigation, Princess Diana, Andrea Dworkin, 1965-2005, revolving doors, Japan, the Clinton administration, 'weblogs', L. Ron Hubbard (maybe?), Hawking radiation, Bart Simpson, the PS3 and bluray, Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, Solidus Snake, "Snakes on a Plane", Billy Joel, Vin Diesel and The Rock, "lol" cats, 4x FSAA, hybrid synergy drive, 'rofl' Mao Zedong (Tse-Tung?), Philo T. Farnsworth, Tim Burton, laser washes...

chivalry died when ff13 went multiplatform. that shit turned the world a little bonkers for a day or two. on topic: this game continues to impress. i was afraid that the multiplayer would suffer as a result of trying to make the best possible single player expierience, but this news gets me all kinds of giddy!

@macr0planet: And that's good. Nobody should have to justify why he doesn't want a PS3, 360 or Wii to me. Or why game X doesn't appeal to him. But ever so often is a game shit talked because...it's exclusively available on one platform that someone doesn't own. Or doesn't like I don't know. I guess that's called a fanboy? :P

I would one day hope to have a PS3, but for now there are very few games that grab my attention that are not already on the X360. I agree with you though, it is stupid to dis something just because you can't play it.

Yeah, as i said before, I'm both looking forward to this probably more than i should be, and very apprehensive at the same time. I played through the original Killzone and while it wasn't the worst FPS I've ever played, it was a long long way from being the best.
That being said, the original game is now several years old, so hopefully they have looked at what the FPS genre is doing at the moment and upped their game.
I do think it looks STUNNING though!

@Pbombas: I find that interesting because COD one, two, three and four all had respawning enemies.
Yes. I am 100% certain. I've been playing that franchise since it started out on the PC and you probably still were toying around with MS Paint (no offence).
But of course that doesn't mean Killzone 2 won't be lackluster. I'm not saying that. It is way too early to judge the game though. I think the graphics will be benchmark, and the rest will be "solid", scoring the average "8". Unless something is terribly broken, shooters easily score that these days. That's just my prognosis so don't mind it at all, it means nothing.

One blogger on the floor complained that the whole game was full of warehouses and monotone, that amazed me too seeing as how the demo on the floor was about 10 minutes of a single part of a mission that took place around a warehouse. Maybe he talked to someone on the dev team that told him the rest of the game would take place around different warehouses around the planet.
Pathetic how all you people just hate on something because you cant play it or you prefer playing games on another console.

@TheBrainNinja: Yes, it was a joke. Obviously the topic (male civility towards women) is more complex than can be addressed by any specific event, person, thing, or movement--I was making a parody of attempts to ascribe changes in complex social dynamics to simple and singular things. That's why some of the things in there are vaguely applicable (Andrea Dworkin didn't help, for example) and some are nonsense.
If I had to take an actual guess, I would say that 'chivalry' as we know it was mostly a substitute for actual human rights. A bit of a social consolation prize for second class citizens.

@Murmaider: And subsequently, the PS3 forum deemed Final Fantasy 13 "insignificant" in the modern JRPG world. -_-
To tell you the truth I'm happy for 360 gamers that they get this game (hoping that it turns out awesome); but I'm even happier that the PS3 iteration will be completed the way it would have been completed if it wasn't multi regarding console differences. So there's no change except more people can play it. I'm always looking for the titles that use a console's potential and focus on it. I love how they trick out the hardware and make a game seem eyes bleeding beautiful but in reality it's just a clever placed effect which coats it, like the Motion Blur in Killzone 2.
In conclusion whenever you see me excited because of an exclusive title...it's not because I'd be happy another console doesn't get it but it's because I'd be happy it might turn out to be a technical marvel that I can play and go "ZOMG" at (see Shadow of the Colossus & Halo last gen, Uncharted & Mass Effect this gen) :)

@DrkBgrk: I doesn't look like there is any vehicle combat, or did I miss something somewhere? @lc204: some would argue that's exactly what happened to halo. Bungie themselves said MS helped them improve their processes, and Halo did turn out very different than originally intended.
Yes kz2 is rumored to be one of the most expensive games ever made, and no I don't expect it to have amazingly inventive gameplay. GOW, KZ, Resistance, Halo are not breakthrough games or reinventing the FPS, and this I think accounts for at least a good portion of their appeal. Pick up and play and polished.
I think KZ1 is very underrated, and was over hyped, but overall solid game with some minor issues. Pretty good game for a first time effort. I really enjoyed the combat because the weapons were so well done. I hated the lead character and the 'urban' guy. Played as the Urban guy just to avoid hearing his annoying wisecracks.

I can't understand how people can criticise an FPS for it's gameplay based on what they see on-screen. In FPS, you shoot and run - although beit with a tactical layer depending on the game.
But some Internet Big Guys just want to hate because it's not coming to their console, complaining that the game plays boring as if they're expecting something other than running and shooting in a damn FPS game; maybe they want a Ferrari from PGR4 to appear, or an RPG element from Fable 2 to make KillZone 2 a respectable FPS.

@macr0planet & Candlejack: Somewhere I remember reading (industry news) that the tables have turned this generation so that instead of the the software being the deciding factor, it's now "the hardware, stupid". Due the BD drive or what, IDK.
I think a lot of it depends on your age. Older gamers are drawn toward the PS3 since it has a more serious audio-visual-multimedia-convergence sort of a presence (remember, it's the hardware, stupid). And the shortage of available AAA games can't be drawback since a more mature gamer usually has less leisure time that she* must divide with other activities as well. Controller preference is viable issue, as well.
KILLZONE 2 is gonna rock my world. I hope they take forever polishing the bejesus out of it. When GTA IV was delayed I was delighted, since I knew it could only make that much better.

After playing the original Killzone i started to get into how the game worked, eventually leading me to a paper written on the AI entitled "KIllzone's AI: dynamic procedural combat tactics". It was quite an interesting read, and the paper impressed me when it came to how deep of a thought process was put into the AI. I hope they kept the same AI in this installment. Now the game does look amazing, that will not make up for too many scripted events and poor AI.
