1942 Coming in Two Weeks
Posted by Brian Crecente at 11:20 PM on July 9, 2008
Capcom's classic arcade shooter 1942: Joint Strike hits the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in just two weeks, the company announced today.
PS3 owners get the game on July 24, while Xbox 360 owners get it on July 23.
The new 1942: Joint Strike will include 2-player online cooperative play, updated graphics and music by Backbone Entertainment and a new score by Norihiko Hibino, a composer best known for his work on the Metal Gear Series.
1942: Joint Strike takes inspiration and influence from the '80s 194X series of World War II-themed vertical arcade shooters. The art, sound and gameplay of the new game take cues from the original 194X games, but will stand out as its own unique entry. Gameplay will resemble the classic 2D style that gamers expect, but the game utilises a fully 3D engine. Set in a World War II-themed locale, stages, vehicles and weapons have the look and feel of WWII with some stylistic differences.

@dv8godd:
Well they were bloody smug that they got exclusive GTA4 downloadable content.
Which seemd rather sad.
I think they were talking about how GTA had to be compressed for the 360 or something and the guy was like "YUSS but we has exclusive contents!"
On a gametrailers interview if I remember correctly.

i really dug 19xx games, but commando 3 was....ok. it wasn't the awesome experience i was thinking it was going to be. maybe it was too cartoon-y for my tastes. hopefully, joint strike will be better.
yeah, and what happened to BC?

Dear Game Companies,
The war is over. Yes, that's right.
World War 1, and for that matter 2, are both over, dead, finished, concluded, past.
War games - just aren't fun anymore. Especially after the 300th one, where we had to command our troops into the same building as 40 games ago, only to have the same ending. We know what happens. We've played it countless times before.
Can you just let it drop? Once?
Maybe just give it a try? Please?
Let's stick to the future. It's bright, and has neon lights all over. Yum. <3

@fadecy: lol. yeah... never know what that bear will do. Deep pockets and a desire to see everyone else burn... I can imagine them throwing money at less.... just cuz they can.
It was much more interesting when they fought over big franchises... imagining them fighting over downloadable 194X rehashes would be kinda... sad and pathetic. Like a couple of old women in a grocery store arguing over who gets the last roll of toilet paper.

@Sanjo: What would games be about if not war? ;)
Besides, 1942 had about as much in common with the reality of piloting a Spitfire in 1942 as... well, absolutely nothing. 99% of the game was pure fantasy... the only thing WWII about it was a few graphical elements.
It's hardly a war game by any stretch, really. After the first 400 kills and a few mega-planes the size of a city, no one is under any illusion it's anything but fantasy wrapped in some of the style of the times. Think of it as an art choice, not a genre... Galaga on Earth, if you will.
_____________________
@fadecy: True... but at least GTA stands to make them that investment back. At least it's got a better shot than the stuff at the bottom of the pile.
And, to be fair, Sony's assertion at that time that they don't pay for exclusive content probably had more to do with their financial woes over the laptop battery fiasco than some ideological split... they probably just didn't have the cash at the time to counter.
In the end, none of the three console manufacturers is very short of smug pride when it comes to what they have that the others don't. Being a pompous ass seems to be par for the course for the lot lately. ;)
As for old women fighting over toilet paper... it's not that the TP isn't useful... it's just kinda sad in the grand scheme of things. Fighting over food if you're starving... sure... but arguing over TP? I suppose I just don't care about my ass that much. Maybe i need better priorities.

@Kyolux: SSHD and 1942 or similar in that they're both arcadey shooters. as much as i can't wait for this, it's not likely to be a patch on SSHD. if it's trophies you want, you could do hell of a lot worse than stardust, that game is great.

I really, seriously hate this generation. It's filled with choosy motherfuckers who are unable to take responsibility for their choices, and are unable to accept that others have chosen otherwise.
360/PS3/Wii "battle" has been the most unpleasant time i've had being a gamer, EVER, and it's 100% because of the child-men who are completely incapable of using their brains for other things than wail for their mom whenever something doesn't go their way.

Anyway on 1942 VS SSHD.. I tried SSHD demo, and I just didn't hooked for some reason. I want trophies as a bonus for 1942, but in now way its a priority.

@PumpkinPieman: agreed, i guess a lot of the people buying games dont know much about 2d games. Megaman, Castlevania, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage... the list goes on and on.
Its a shame because 19xx had very nice rendered graphics. Drab desaturated graphics have no place in a game where twitch control movements mean the difference between getting shot and getting shot 23 seconds later.

@dv8godd: I totally understand that, and I admit I did jump the gun. But when I hear/see/think of war games like this..It's -really- being dragged on, really..really.
Opinion, but im not hiding behind that. I really believe these games have gone on long enough. War games about wars nobody knew, and will never know are okay. You can add a nice spin on that, but WWI/WWII, it's become less of a historic war, and more of a profit.

@Sanjo: I think the big problem with WWII games isn't necessarily the WWII theme itself... it's that the plot is largely the same. We typically get (insert allied soldier) facing (alone or with small squad) against the evil (Japanese or Germans) while acquiring better guns along the way.
I could take another WWII game if it was from the perspective of a German or Japanese soldier, or anything outside the usual mold... just not any more of this cheap/easy "Axis is teh evil" plot where you know the score before you even install the game.
In other words... it's not necessarily that WWII is completely played out... but that the regurgitated allied hero plotline is.
But that said... if someone came up with a WWII game where you played a conflicted German soldier in a psychological story of how he loves his country, but disagrees with the politics, in a personal struggle to find his place in the world... I'd be down with that.
They just need to start avoiding the cheap route to defining who the bad guys are. I too am tired of shooting Nazis, even if they're vampire zombie Nazis. Hell, I'm tired of shooting vampires and zombies too... the "other" easy evil in videogames.

I'll definitely be getting this one when it's available. Now they just need to bring a couple of more like it to the PSN. Such as Death Smiles, and any of the TouHou games. SHEESH!
Why does everything have to be in sepia? Most games need colors so it doesn't mess up the gameplay.
I was playing Burnout paradise yesterday (at a friends house; I would never buy that crap) and it hit me that with the desaturated colors of the game it ruins the racing and avoind of cars. It makes it harder to see ahead of you becuase all you see are small black blobs. And also it reminds me of crazy taxi.

@dv8godd: Spitfire? What Spitfire? Last time I looked, 1942 and 1943 both featured the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a twin-boomed American multi-role fighter that saw most of its active duty in the Pacific Theater. The name of the plane gives you an idea of where the special lightning attack comes from in 1943.
The Spitfire was a smaller British interceptor that saw most of its service in the European Theater of Operations.
Both were very worthy aircraft for their time, but they have almost nothing in common besides being prop-driven fighter aircraft in the combined Allied arsenal.

@Vipre77: Spitfire, P-38... whichever man... don't get your knickers in a twist, I was trying to make a point that this isn't a realistic WWII sim. ;)
I didn't research it, I was just commenting off the cuff to make a completely different point, and honestly... I don't really care all that much either way. I'm sorry if I offended you with an inaccurate accounting of an inaccurate game... but it wasn't my intention. I just had Spitfire on the mind because I'd been listening to Prodigy or something.
My point wasn't to discuss the specifics of 1942 beyond the fact that it's not a realistic WWII war game by any stretch. I mean, last time I looked, neither Spitfires nor P-38's shot lightning either... or 99% of the other shit in the game...
... so, technically, I can call it the Walrus MX-666 Mutha-Smacka for all it really matters. ;)
I mean... if I'm going to get the smack-down for flubs on WWII aircraft, then that's cool... but at least let it be in a real WWII flight sim. :D
