Of Course, Capcom Wants Mega Man 9 Hard
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 8:00 PM on July 22, 2008
When we were kids, Mega Man was a hard game. We died all the time. And when we were dying in Mega Man, we were dying in Mega Man. It was that hard. So when Capcom decided to make the multi-platform Mega Man 9, the company knew it had to make it hard. Says the game's producer Hironobu Takeshita:
Mega Man 9 is very hard. We didn't want to do Mega Man, but easy. We want players to get better, we want them to remember. I've always tried to challenge players, and I think there are gamers who miss being challenged by games.
We'd like to think so as well. Takeshita also expressed his interest in making more Wii titles, which is good news for Wii owners looking for a challenge.

@shrek187: I'm all for great gameplay but their descision to go 8-bit and take all the technical limitations associated with it killed it for me. I don't understand why they can't offer the same classic gameplay with a few more colours, high frame-rate, smooth scrolling, non-flickering sprites and higher resolution.

I'm not exactly fantastic at video games, but I've never had any trouble with any Mega Man games after I was about 14 years old. Do people REALLY think they're that hard? I can cruise through the ones like 5 or 6 (which I've played the least) without continuing, and I can do 1, 2, and 3 pretty much in my sleep (but that's cuz I've played them so much)

Of course Mega Man 9 is hard. When was the last time a Mega Man game was easy, anyway?
I just wish they made it hard by using something like enemy routes or bullet hells to get you in a tough situation, instead of making it hard by gimping the controls to a "shoot forward" position.

@Knaaks: I think you've pretty much explained the reasoning on why Mega Man 9's made this way. In 5 or 6, you have the charge shot, the slide, etc and it can pretty much be used on all enemies. It's sometimes more effective than the weapon weakness.
In the first few games, you were almost completely reliant on memorising levels and weapon weaknesses, to the point that you'd have to play them a ton of times.

So the game is actually hard? I just thought the guy playing it on those E3 videos sucked at it, which is why it looked so difficult.
Here's to hoping they don't make it harder by swapping the A and B button functions like they did on the GameCube collection. Playing games for 20 years one way, becoming accustomed to that control layout, and suddenly I was running into pits shooting away like an idiot and jumping around when I wanted to kill things.

Yeah, well as far as I'm concerned (and only partly because I like to be contrary to general opinion), bring on the easy games.
I mean don't get me wrong I play games in 'normal' mode (not easy, and not hard; except very very occasionally if I've already completed it in normal). But I'm really pleased that the 'normal' mode in most games is now easy enough that you can generally, with some effort, make progress and only rarely get stuck on trying something dozens of times.
I downloaded the Contra demo for DS yesterday (it's on DS download service now, if anyone hasn't noticed) and wow that is a reminder of how games used to suck. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it is great example of that type of game but I played it about 10 times and still didn't get to the end of the demo... The first few times, it was fun. After the tenth time I'd had enough of replaying the same two minutes of game.

@JakeDunn: from what I remember, Mega Man has never been cheap hard, it's been memorization hard. Enter the screen, remember that this particular enemy has this particular attack/shooting pattern - dodge the shots and remember to shoot the enemy during the half-second they expose themselves. Climb the ladder, and be careful of the gun turrets on both sides - you do remember how often they fire, right?
Also, every boss has a weakness that makes him much-more-beatable, but the weapon you must use against them (usually) comes from another boss, who was naturally weak against another weapon gained from another boss, yadda yadda yadda. Figuring out what the boss is weak to usually eats up your first two attempts.

I'm fine if it's difficulty is similar to that of the older MM games. They were difficult, but not overly punishing. As long as you picked up the occasional extra life, you should be fine.
If they make it horrendously hard though, I won't be happy.

I'm looking forward to Mega Man 9. The decision to make it very hard may result in a lower metacritic score since this generation of gamers have been babied since the early 90s with a flood of easy as fuck games, and Mega Man Battle Network players will piss and moan to no end, but Capcom wants to give us a real Mega Man game, and I'm ready to throw down in Wutaitown.

Megaman was hard because it was cheap, like forcing you to memorise the sequence of appearing/disappearing blocks with a drop that would kill you if you made one mistake. It also sent you back to the start of the level if you used a continue, requiring you to do all the shit you'd already done again. It was an artificial way to lengthen a short game, and really I don't think that those sorts of things need resurrecting or that many players outside the very hardcore will respond to it.
I'm happy to be proven wrong, but even if it is a flop, 8-bit graphics and 2D levels won't have cost Capcom much.

@photoboy: It's not as bad as you make it out to be. Those disappearing block segments don't require trial and error. @Ashurahori: I would LOVE to see some bullet hell in my Mega Man!
Shooting forward is fine, imo. Aside from the weapons that end up giving you 8 direction fire, I think setting Mega Man to a straight forward fire just isn't as negative as some players make it out to be. It adds a decent indoctrination of strategic avoidance that becomes comfortable standard fare as you play more of the titles.

Here's the problem. When I was a kid I had a short attention span and didn't mind dying and replaying the same seciton of game over and over again for a whole evening. Now that I'm 28 have a job and have a life, I want to be able to play a game that fun and enjoyable. I want to be able to play a game and feel like I'm making progress, advancing the stroyline or just seeing new areas. I loved the game play of Ninja Gaiden but hated the fact that they set a mandatory difficulty level on the high end of the difficulty curve and made you play it that way. I loved that game so much I struggled and almost beat it but by the end when they throw you in a room with about 6 freaking huge dinosaurs and a crappy camera I just gave it up.

@IronsUK: Riiiiight. Even games like MM9 have more than a 6 month production cycle today. I kinda doubt that there are any other publishers crazy enough to do 8-bit games. Crazy awesome!, but still crazy.
I am so looking forward to this one! Mmmm... difficulty, and real difficulty too. Since its 2-D, there's no artificial difficulty added due to bad cameras (a la Ninja Gaiden). That said, I would love to see a 2-D original MM series game with exquisitely detailed animated backgrounds and such. Games like Lost Winds show there are programmers out there with 2-D artistic chops that can do it.

This man is my hero. If only there were people like this powering the machines behind the triple A titles that turn out to be casual mush. I think this especially applies to the Wii, the only game that I've found moderately challenging on the console was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
And even then, it wasn't the type of difficulty that made you collapse on the floor in joyous exasperation upon completion - I miss those games.

I remember how hard Mega Man was and in fact, it was the difficult entry level that put me off the series as a child 10-12. These days however I like to challenge myself by playing through games on the hardest settings, this is for two main reasons. Primarily I really enjoy the accomplishment felt from having beaten something that was genuinely tough, and secondarily I always feel that I get more value for my money rather than blasting though the game on easy and then trading or what have you...
So, if Mega Man is going to be hard then good, Im all for it. Games in general could do with more challenging.
