Gary Oldman Confirms Dark Knight Game
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 PM on July 23, 2008
The Dark Knight is out. Where's the game? In an interview with G4 TV, thespian Gary Oldman let it slip that a Dark Knight game is "in the works". He described how Lieutenant Gordan is in a small scene on top of the Major Crime Unit building when Batman "jumps off the building and opened his wings to fly away and save the day" — "so it doesn't stop and start", says Oldman, "like you're watching a movie". In the now since pulled interview clip, Oldman did not mention the developer or release date. Rumour has it that Pandemic is working on the title. Neato.

I am 100% certain Pandemic are developing it.
I heard from an inside source that they are devving it and have been for quite some time.
I'm fairly sure as well that it is getting devved by the Brisbane team entirely.

I've always kinda hoped that any Batman game would incorporate some sort of Sierra/Lucas Arts style puzzle adventuring.
Don't get me wrong I'm not looking for a Kings Quest style Batman game, I just want something that reminds people that he's supposed to the "The Worlds Greatest Detective" instead of "The worlds greatest guy at punching nameless goons in the face and then having a few boss fights."
Give me an open area to explore and search for clues that will advance the story while I'm punching faces in.
Sadly I don't think I've ever played a game based in the DC universe that was worth the time it took to load it up, to say nothing of the mediocre Batman games.

@TurtleSoup: "I was surrounded by people who fell asleep to it in the cinema as well!"
I think the atmosphere at the movies has a lot to do with how much you enjoy the movie.
A lot of us went to midnight showings where the people in the theater were out of their seats cheering when Joker did his "pencil trick".
If I went and saw it with a bunch of sleeping people, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it for that fact alone.
(Also, I think you are one of the first people I have seen who didn't like the movie that actually gave meaningful reasons instead of just saying "Uh, it was ghey".)

@gothamdarkknight: Wah it would be awesome as a Sandbox game!
Better choice of Random missions then Spiderman stuff. Strong AI driven gangs rather than all scripted stuff - I can but dream!
And the wanted level thing is the thing that would be most awesome to base the game around - as said in the movie that he doesn't have to be a hero - he can be whatever Gotham needs.
That concept alone done properly could turn it into an awesome game!

@Miksho: I'm surprised I'm in the minority for this but no I really didn't actually rate the movie as much as I did Batman Begins.
I found it was overly long for the material it presented. I think the percentage of action scenes was a little low compared to everything else (I'm surprised to say that!). I preferred the look of Gotham in Batman Begins. It maybe needed some more light comic relief at points for its length as well.
The whole stupid voice that Bale puts on when he is Batman just got out of hand and I expect him to become good fodder for adverts for sore throat remedies. Its like Nolan and Bale have this thing since Batman & The Prestige that he must talk in a strange voice when they work together!
Maggie Gyllenhaal looked like she needed so much sleep she had turned into an old woman - not that her performance was bad but just because as an object of desire I expected her to look attractive. Strange as she is usually quite hot and maybe its just shallowness bred into me by other typical Hollywood movies.
Ledgers performance was good and as I said I liked the ending. The bit in Hong Kong was amusing when Edison Chan appeared everyone laughed - I watched it in Hong Kong and you'd have to know who he is etc.
I think the main issue I had with it is that it totally lost any air of 'mystery' to him the other films have. One friend described it as it just made him feel like James Bond in a silly suit too much which probably has some truth.
For example scenes like when he is sky hooked from Hong Kong they could have done more like the scene at the end in Batman Begins when he opens his cape leaving Liam Neeson to fall to his death. I think a lot of the camera angle and position choices weren't that great.
I didn't think it was a bad movie just not a great movie. I was surrounded by people who fell asleep to it in the cinema as well! I think tighter editing would have gone a long way.

The other problem would be if they did The Joker in it or not. I mean, a voice actor mimicking Ledger is possible... but it would feel cheap I guess.
@Touy:
But if the game played liked this, I don't think I would care.

I was just thinking about where a Dark Knight video game was while playing some Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Lately, almost all the big comic book movies seem to arbitrarily have a video game come out within a month of the movie's release.
Granted, most of them were crap, but they still came out. Hopefully they do the game justice. If the game developer devotes as much effort into the game as the movie's staff did, then it should be amazing.

@gothamdarkknight: Here's my pitch:
Runs on the Assassin's Creed engine, set in Nolan's stylized Chicago version of Gotham. Locomotion is handled with a combination of grappling gun, climbing, batmobile/pod and base jumping/gliding. Players are encouraged to use stealth, but can play it loud if they'd like/need to. Combat is much more fluid than Assassin's Creed, but still partially reversal based. Think along the lines of the finishers, but requiring more player input.
If you could do a better version of Spiderman's random crimes combined with, say... assassin's creed's interrogations (set up traps to dangle people from rooftops?), I would be all for it.
Then if you could do a sort of x-com style thing where you manage where the waynetech staff goes and what they're working on? Wow. I would buy that.

Well, it wouldn't take much to be better than the Batman Begins game that was basically just one long tutorial. You just kept waking forward until text came up telling you which button to push next THE WHOLE GAME, and they give you a batarang that you can use when a reticle pops up on the screen telling to to do so. So awful, why does DC still allow games of it's characters to be made by EA.

A Dark Knight game? I don't know if I should be pleased or disgusted! The movie was amazing, and I would give a lot to play a game based off of it, but the ratio of good movie games to bad movie games is bad. Out of 15 bad ones, there's like 2 good ones. I hope this is one of those 2.

"Batman: Non-Superhero who uses stealth and refuses to kill his enemies."
So Kojima Productions should make it.
Let's compare Batman and Metal Gear:
- Tons of crazy gadgets: check.
- Long, drawn out dialog: check.
- Sneaking and CQC over gunfire: check.
- Epic villains (Joker, Ocelot): check.
- Overly scratchy main character voices: check.
It's perfect! Sorry CliffyB.

Oh, this just reminded me that I haven't seen The Fifth Element in a long time. Gary Oldman is an excellent actor. Léon, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lost in Space, the Batman films; even if the movie he's in is mediocre, you can at least know his performance will make it semi-viewable. Truly, a very talented man.
As for the game, well, at least we know it exists. Will it have a Burnout inspired chase scene featuring Batman on his motorcycle chasing The Joker? By the way, that chase scene was great in The Dark Knight. I have to see that film again.

@Gunloc: How the hell does Batman fit Epic?
Epic's Portfolio: Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, etc. Games about big guys, big guns, chainsaws, and chaotic battles.
Batman: Non-Superhero who uses stealth and refuses to kill his enemies.
Unless this was a Pinball Batman game, I don't see how Epic would be the right choice.

Oh yeah, did anyone notice at all that maybe some people who worked on this movie had played MGS3? The end is tonally very similar, and former Media Ventures composer Gregson Williams can and does sound like Hans Zimmer sometimes. But from the skyhook bit to the last final moments which seem to be oddly emotionally similar to MGS3 to me...

I don't care what the reviewers said, I thoroughly enjoyed the Batman Begins game, enough to beat it four times. If Pandemic is attached, all the better.

@Sammo21: Disagree. G4 is a welcome channel on DirecTV package solely for showing Ninja Warrior and other, more bizarre Japanese gameshows. I challenge you to find better drunken viewing material.
A decade ago, the women of G4 would have provided an adolescent Jonaconda with some top-notch masturbatory material as well, but that was in the dark days before internet pornography became widely available and stealing black-and-white underwear ads in the newspaper for prurient pursuits was commonplace....
...Kids these days don't know how good they got it.
