Hands-On With Fable II, Molyneux's 'Biggest' Game
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on July 23, 2008
Getting a proper impression of a game like Fable II, one that spans the lives of multiple generations, is almost impossible at an event like E3. And if Fable II lead Peter Molyneaux is being accurate when he calls the game "The biggest, most complete story of any game I've ever created", we haven't seen, well, anything yet.
That's why it's helpful that something like Fable II can be broken down into digestible, feature-focusing chunks. The game's dog, for example, with its ability to help out in battle, its nose for hidden treasure, we know is going to be A Big Deal. We won't be surprised if Man's Best Friend plays a more important role than Molyneux led us to believe in our sit down preview of his Xbox 360 game.
We just know he's going to emotionally manipulate us with that lovable digital mutt.
We were about two hours into Fable II's storyline, Molyneux says, when we got our first hands-on experience with combat and dog-play. Combat has been a big focus in the Fable sequel, and while it may not have Ninja Gaiden calibre aspirations (or animations), it works. It's fun, especially when the dog comes to your aid, gnawing on the limb of some recently dispatched foe.
The hero in Fable II had access to limited combat options at this point. He was just getting his hands on some rifles and a little bit of magic. Sadly, we didn't get to take on that lovely looking Treant beast, just some rank and file pirates, but left the combat experience feeling more than satisfied.
If there's one thing that Fable II looks to achieve, it's painless action RPG combat. It may not have the cinematic flair of Nintendo's 3D Legend of Zelda games, but Lionhead Studios title has so much more depth, we can forgive a few rough edges.
And being the graphics snob I am, those rough edges come across in some occasionally homely character models. The hero's wife in Fable II may be a busty beauty, but the game may get some flack for its sometimes ho-hum visuals.
That will most likely be forgiven with the impressive amount of depth the game appears to have. The ability to upgrade your career skills via mini-game diversions looks better than grinding and cold, hard stats arrangement.
When we got into town, we met Fable II's bard, the singer-songwriter who will belt out tales of your heroism. He'll also sing songs of your cowardice, adding comic relief and occasional annoyance to your journey through the game.
Molyneux showed off some of the game's Expressions, the silly jigs and smooth moves that let you woo ladies and forge new friendships, prior to our hands-on. You'll pick them from a radial menu when you want to take a wife or receive a gift. They were fairly limited in our demo of the game, but look to provide some welcome options for adding variety to the game world. You'll see non-playable characters throughout town that you can interact with using Expressions, each with icons over their heads indicating their disposition. Wow them with your moves and you'll reap the rewards.
It's difficult to tell if Fable II, with its pub games, combat system, intelligent canine partner and career skills, will be more than the sum of its parts. We'll know when the game ships this October, as we start focusing less on the features and more on the game itself.

The next one to state the overly obvious (and beaten into the ground) Peter Molyneux paradox...

Peter has said this about every game he has made. All of them went on to not living up to his promises.
Sorry Peter, but your epic fails have driven me to get your game off Pirate Bay to see if you are lying to me again.
It better finally have the real time tree growth you promised.

One of my friends picked up a copy of Fable: TLC for me around my birthday. I hadn't played the game in ages - but man.
I forgot how fun it was. It might not have lived up to all the hype, but it was entertaining and full of charm and style, with an entertaining gameplay system to boot. The only thing that was disappointing was the story.
Honestly. This will be a GREAT game. Just don't get all snubby if it's not the second coming or something.

@Diddy_Mao: Pretty much every thing that has been announced for this game has been shown in gameplay demos. Every thing you expect to be in fable will probly be their.

@jigglypoofs: Yes, but too bad Morrowind and Oblivion did everything else Fable 1 was supposed to do 1000X's better (except for combat, obviously).
'Course, I still don't like Morrowind or Oblivion that much. Too much uninteresting and fake history of the world... and definitely very little gameplay that was actually FUN. Plenty of good ideas in the game.. just not a whole lot of good implementation of said ideas.
Both games are lacking greatly in a good system with random NPC interactions. Getting people to love/hate you in Fable was lame. You just had to be fairly good or fairly evil and people pretty much acted the same. And getting a girl to marry you was lame... get her drunk, buy her gifts, propose. Lame.

Hmm... this hands-on impression is fairly lackluster. The only thing I got out of it that I haven't already gotten out of the couple of articles I've bothered reading was that you, Michael McWhertor, left feeling satisfied about the 1-button combat.
And that you care about graphics a little too much (though, I do understand mentioning the potential let-down for similar graphic-whores).
But seriously... if I was getting a hands-on impression from Peter Molyneux himself and he just started showing me the stupid jigs and expressions your character can do... I probably would have just stood up and walked out.
Or just asked "who cares?"
Seriously... why would this be something he wanted to show. "Hey look at this canned animation the artist made that you can assign to a button... Isn't that awesome. Oh haha, he belched... oh now he's flipping the bird. Oh, what a wonderful, magical game."
And I still think the dog seems stupid... and not really all the original, remembering Secret of Evermore.

@Scorpinox: Oh they'll most likely kill the dog. It will probably the main villain that does it, most likely before the final boss fight. That's most likely what will happen, but I hope they avoid it. It's just too predictable.

although fable 1 was a bit of a let down, it had 10x more charm and fun than oblivion, and the AI was 1000x better, you could actually interact with NPCs and make them hate you, love you, follow you, fight for your, marry you etc.
Fable 2 looks like a charming emersion in a Tim Burton type world, with even better AI and quests. This is second on my most wanted of 2008, just behind fallout.

I can't understate how mad I'll be if they kill the dog, and especially if they do it badly. It's such a cheap trick to get people to feel emotion, and even from the snippet about the dog chewing on recently died foes, I can already tell he's my favorite character :P

Thats a direct rip off from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Still, it'll be fun.

Yup, I loved Fable.
It's a love/hate thing I found though. There's no other game with such glaring problems and issues that I love as much as Fable.
Hard to explain, but I felt like it had such missed potential even though I loved it. If those problems weren't there the original would be one of my favourite games, ever.
That's why I'm incredibly excited, yet nervous for Fable II. Fingers crossed.

Peter Molyneux has always impressed me with his enthusiasm. More times than not he is so excited about his games, and is so good at convincing us to be excited we're let down.
I hope this is the game that pays off for him. He seems to have a heart for games and game design. I really hope this is a great one!

Grrr I think my comment got eaten. From the hands-on could you tell how open the game is? Fable was so path-restricted and had such small zones that it felt constraining. It was my main complaint with that game, I liked most of the other bits.

One thing I'd love to know for sure: Are there load screens (i.e., zones) like in Fable 1? I hate those. =) Also, is it less following a path like F1 was? Ideally there'd be no real barriers, but I don't dare hope for it to be that open. Thanks!

@deathtastic:
I'm hoping it will be at least half as good as it looks, the big problem with a lot of Molyneux's games is that they're only about 25% as good as he claims they'll be.
I know at least 4 people who bought the original Xbox on release date in 2001 based on the hype of Fable which was, I believe supposed to be a launch title. Once the game was finally released in 2004 they were sorely disappointed in what was delivered to them.
It's not like it's a bad game, it's just a lot less in depth than promised.
I personally have copies of Black & White I and II staring me in the face frequently causing me to wonder where games with such promise went so wrong.
If I hadn't grown up playing Populous and Dungeon Keeper I'd swear the guy was all hype.

I didn't play fable for a while but I remember I was powerful beyond belief. I also owned all the real estates in every town. I was so damn rich. I just run from town to town collecting rent every 3 days. I earned my money originally by cheating at gambling. Then went from town to town killing everyone so I can make room to buy the property. I started to have horns and flies around my head so i've decided to turn good. In the end, I have a halo around my head.

Why all the hate on Molyneux? .....he is enthusiastic with his projects...and probably in-line with the current hate figure...Cliffy B (or is that Huge Dude or Bleszinski?)....why the hell do we as game lovers attack these people?....for what...loving what they do?...they create the games that we love (and hate!)....Fable had it's problems BUT it was still a brilliant gaming experience...Mr Molyneux will bring a superb game to the table yet people will still find flaws....get over yourselves! and give the man a chance to realize a vision (however flawed)

Hope this game is longer than the first Fable. I completed it in 2 days, even though it had some replay value it still was to short. Also lets hope this game is harder than the first, there where no way to die in Fable 1 since it was to easy. Also lets hope the scraped the hole "if your evil you become a devil but if your good you become an angle part". It will still be a fun game nonetheless with the Co-op and all.
