Marvel Changing The Way It Handles Game Licenses
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on July 23, 2008
For all Marvel's recent success in the movie business, there hasn't been a decent Marvel video game for years. Something the company are looking at changing. Speaking last week at an entertainment marketing conference, Marvel's Ira Rubenstein said a couple of things that should be good news for comic book fans. One is that he wants the production of movie-based games to begin sooner, so as to allow them more development time. As an example, he says Sega are already working on the Thor and Avengers games, even though they're not due in cinemas until 2010. Rubenstein also says he wants more Marvel games that aren't tied to movies, again for development timing purposes, but also presumably to allow for more creative, appealing uses of the company's characters.

I dunno for a while Marvel were really doing incredible. Spider-man 2, Ultimate Spider-man, Hulk:UD, X-men legends 1+2, Marvel UA. All they really need is to ensure that all their games are good quality not just some.
It's pretty clear that Spider-man 3 and the new hulk were horribly rushed and basically just tried to use the previous game as building blocks. The iron man game again clearly rushed.

Seeing as there's already way too many superheroes in the Marvel Universe they'd figure you can't have too many games published about it either. Their logic is so powerful.

@TheAngryHeretic: I agree. Marvel Ultimate Alliance was great... played it through with my wife and we both liked it a lot. It was however released in 2006, so technically that's long enough to say it's been years (2 is enough for the plural form) since the last good one. It's not the best use of the phrase though since it almost makes it sound like there hasn't been a good game out for... years.

Maybe if Marvel didn't allow crappy studios to make their games they wouldn't be putting turds on the shelf.
People talk about a GTA-style Batman game, they could do the same thing with Spiderman and done by a studio with 18-24 months it would be our new God. However, it's much easier to churn out a piece of refuse to cash-in on movie tie-ins.

Here's an idea Marvel, just stop doing movie based video games in the first place. That way you can do games based on whatever superhero you want at a nice leisurely pace where you don't have to rush to meet the deadline of the movie release. Everyone could be very happy with that solution, unless you still screw it up... but I don't want to be too pessimistic.

No, I think he was right to leave it out.
I did mostly enjoy Ultimate Spiderman, I have to say.. but the gameplay was a bit frustrating at a times (mostly the Venom levels), and overall it could have been a much better game.
The problem with licensed games is that fans tend to give the game a bit of leeway because it has licensed characters and "it's not bad for a licensed game". However, if you replace Wolverine, Spiderman, and all other recognizable characters with non-licensed heretofore unseen characters and judge the games based simply on their gameplay (which is what we should be doing in the first place), the games tend to be mediocre at best and can't compare to other games in the same genre.

First they are going to need all their licenses under the same roof, (Punisher is still under exclusivity for Ubisoft) and then should plan to publish games surrounding Marvel comic events (Secret Invasion, Civil War, etc) instead of the movies. Only then will they really be putting out a well planned, excellent product worth making.

Free Roam can be fucking terrible with very few missions to do.
Just look at Spider-Man 2 the game. Sure, swinging through the city felt really nice.. and actually made the game worth playing through once. But every mission is like the exact same. SP2 is really not that great of game, it just had a good mechanic and the first realistic New York City in a game.

Ultimate Alliance was great and faithful, for the most part, to its source material. Also a sequel to Ultimate Alliance was announced at E3 this year, although little was shown. I don't doubt it will be at least as good as the first though. Hopefully they just balance the characters a little better. Some were ridiculously powerful, clearing room after room of baddies with ease, while others struggled in combat with only a few enemies. More abilities for each playable character would be nice too.
Ultimate Spider-Man was decent, but not great, as were the other Spider-Man games (aside from 3). I do wish they would make a Spider-Man game and spend more time on it though. Ultimate was ridiculously short, and the gameplay, while fun, was incredibly shallow. They need to refine the close quarters controls, and have a lot more indoor sections that are set up like real levels, instead of just missions that are races, chases, or beating up random people.
The next Spider-Man game looks like it might have improved the combat a lot... lets hope thats not all it improves.
I salivate at the idea of a decent Iron Man game. Its a hard game to make. There isn't really a similar type of game to base it on, so you have to go for something unique, which is normally a bad idea for license games, because of scheduling. In the hands of the right team though, Iron Man could be an amazing game.

Uhm. Isn't this like a NO SHIT affair? I loved the Spider Man 2 (I even liked 3) And Ultimate Alliance is my own little Diablo clone I love so dearly (the creation of different "teams" for bonuses based on comic groups i thought was pure brilliance. new avengers? YES. marvel knights? YES.) But I've always been pissed at how rail thin the stories in the games were. It seems to me the story in a comic book game could be so much better than a movie! first off you have time that you don't have with a movie. You could recreate an entire plot from the books. Civil War themed game anyone? How amazing would that be? Age of apocalypse. A good third person sandbox like game with the X-Men, with branching storylines much like Spider Man? Genosha? The Danger Room? The X-Mansion? Huge 50 foot sentinels? How are they only now realizing this? Think God of War with Colossus. Prince of Persia with Beast? Resident Evil 5 with Cyclops? Portal with Nightcrawler? No-Clipping mode with Kitty Pryde? (joke) Can I please slice someone up with berserker rage? Can I get a Wolvie featuring kitty pryde game set in japan please? Thank you.

@Brokenface2k: I'll agree with you. However, I still stand by my comment that Spider Man 2 (AND Huld:UD) didn't have enough variety in their missions.
And it was really just the big cities and mechanics in which you got around that made either of them stand out.
I still find it incredibly fun to swing through NYC in SM2 and jumping through the city in Hulk is, by far, the best on-foot free-roam control. WAY better than Crackdown's. But overall, the design and the missions were lackluster.
