THQ Signs Up With GameTap
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on July 23, 2008
While Turner Broadcasting's GameTap service gave us a scare awhile back by cutting off it's editorial arm, the game download side of things is still as strong as ever, and growing even strong still as they announce a long-term partnership with THQ to include the publisher's games on the service. This will add existing games like Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40K, Titan Quest and Red Faction to the service, while securing future titles such as Saint's Row 2.
"Our new partnership with GameTap allows both a brand new audience and fans alike to enjoy our titles and franchise games online," said Adrienne Lauer, National Sales Director, Market Development for THQ, "Digital distribution is a great way to extend the reach of our properties and GameTap is an ideal outlet for this effort."
See? GameTap knows what it's doing. The editorial content always seemed unnecessary to me anyway. More games is good! Hit the jump for the full PR.
GAMETAP SIGNS PARTNERSHIP WITH THQ
New deal includes top titles and franchises like Company of Heroes

Oh no! PuzzleQuest... there goes my productivity for a while.
I'd been resisting buying it for fear of lost time, but if it's right there on Gametap I don't think I'll be able to hold off any longer.

How long until Gametap joins Sony/MS party for console-level service ala Netflix?

@Lazlo: Did you read the thing?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Saints Row, and PuzzleQuest.
And Warhammer 40k.
Yeah, they have some good games.

Has THQ come out with anything of late that truly merits excitement? I consider myself fairly up to date with developers and their works, but I can't come up with anything that screams "must-have" from THQ. For some reason this is always what comes to mind when I hear their name: [en.wikipedia.org]

@NitrousO: Mine too, that is why I supplement it with Wikipedia for small stuff, and Google for big stuff, cross-reference multiple sites, books, and what remains of my memory for the really big stuff.
... Just got a big wave of self-pity right there. Power goes out and I'll start drooling.

@Ghede: Ah! Codemasters, a strange one to confuse with THQ but then again, my memory sucks as O Chem has taught me.
@slight: Ya, it was the stuff that doesnt work with them that kept me from going 64bit for the moment. My gamebridge wont work on 64 bit (still using to convert the last of our home movies from 8mm and VHS to digital) and neither will me wireless adapter on my main gaming machine (D-link basically said, go buy one of our newer more expensive ones).

@NitrousO: 64bit OSs are over-rated IMHO. Unless you need to address more than 4GB of RAM, which most people still don't, or you're a heavy video encoder or something then I still don't think they're worth all the extra hassle of the stuff that still doesn't work with them.

Damn, going to have to renew mine for another month or two.
Are they putting Warhammer and Company of Heroes with the expansions, or is it just the main game? I'm hoping it's all the expansions as well, but doesn't mean that they will do so :(.

Since launch, GameTap has only gotten better. Currently, I spend about half my time playing STEAM games, and half my time playing GameTap games ... and I probably spend less on GameTap.
Soooo worth it. I'm surprised they haven't yet raised the rate from $9.95. After all, I paid $7.44 for the sandwhich I just ate.

@Sylent: Really?! How is that even possible in this age. Im like one of the last holdouts among the gamers I know with a 32bit OS.

It's a shame that Gametap still doesn't work on 64-bit systems.

Wasn't Overlord a THQ game and wasn't that already on their service?
As soon as STALKER goes live, I expect each and every person with a computer to play it or else! I will be watching D:<

@Sylent: Yep, but I can still play the games, just not through gametap...so guess who loses out on that one. (Hint: Not me)

Gametap + Steam > PC Gaming Alliance
Any news of Gametap or Steam growing is great news so suck it up if they don't support every hardware config and slow internet access.
I will give you a simple analogy. You don't put a great engine in a crappy car and blame it for poor performance when the air intake is clogged. You also wouldn't add a 12 cylinder gas engine to an electric car and complain that it doesn't work with your car of the future. You get a modern car and a modern engine and combine them for best results.

@NitrousO: Overlord? I'm pretty sure that was a Codemasters game.
I have no interest in this... most THQ games bore me.
