Warner Bros. Throws A Curve With Wanted
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on July 23, 2008
Did you see the movie Wanted or read Mark Millar's comic series and think to yourself, "This would make a nifty video game?" Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment apparently did, and they've tapped Bionic Commando developer GRIN to get the job done. The game picks up where the movie left off, continuing the adventures of sad-sack turned master assassin Wesley Gibson. Expect plenty of curved bullets, slow-motion "assassin's time" events, and an advanced cover system to help deal with the fact the guns don't shoot straight anymore. Here's the first set of screens for the game, available later this year for "consoles and personal computer". Hey, I have one of those!

My impression coming out of Wanted was that it was some sort of glorious mishmash of GTA, Assassin's Creed (not just the topic matter, but some of the "fade-to-white" screens), and Equilibrium (one of the end scenes was like one giant gunkata scene), topped with Angelina Jolie's buttocks.
All in all, not disappointing at all.
So considering that pedigree, it should be possible to make a game of it. I do emphasize should, though.

Never, ever.

I was kinda glad they strayed from the comic, the comic was pretty over the top. At least the movie had some basic moral premise "Kill one save a thousand", whereas the comic was just like "Hey, let's kill and rape for the heck of it!".
Anyways, I don't know how they're going to work out this whole "bullet curve" thing, but it could be interesting I guess. It seems like they're not trying to make it a direct port of the movie, which is good, but since it still is a comic turned movie turned game, I'll leave my expectations low.

I just want Angelina Jolie. You could make an entire game of just staring at that beautiful specimen of woman in HD while she played Solitaire and I'd consider it $60 well spent.

@GusherKid: Well, Wanted was a ton of fun. Dark Knight's main goal was to make happy people depressed and depressed people reach the point of no return, with no real triumphant moment. So, no one will blame you.

Yes!!! I was hoping for a Wanted game but figured if it's not out already it's not coming.
I swear, that movie rocked my socks soooo hard. I was more impressed with it than The Dark Knight. I know I'll get flack for that but it's true. Of course I did read the Wanted miniseries when it came out.... but I also read The Dark Knight Returns (which I'm convinced Nolan wrote the new movie to be a prequel for), so I'm just a big geek all around.

I left the movie thinking, "ok, gotta buy the game tomorrow, I don't care if it sucks" only to discover there is no game. So cool.
I read about it and the story seems pretty good and it'll have a lot of curving bullets. Could get old after 30 seconds, or could be insanely awesome. The impressions I've read so far are all favorable, and not just in those "it's a preview so it has to sound positive" way but in a "wow, this game is above and beyond what you'd expect" way.
Hopefully it is.

Nope, I think this is going to be stupid as a game.
When your entire premise is "our bullets curve, so you're going to have some awkward as hell schemes available to you", you know things are not going to turn out well.

I enjoyed the movie well enough. The comic, however, is one of the worst things I've had the misfortune of viewing. Absolutely great concept, but the implementation was abysmal.

That last shot looks ridiculous. The shot is an extreme downward arc when it looks like a normal bullet path from that angle would get you the kill.

I am unsure how awesome this can be. I'm assuming this is going to be line-up-your-targeting-reticle Hell, because you can't simply rely on your bullets to, you know, fly straight. And it would be way, way cooler if they based the game on the comic than the movie, because villains > heroes. Villains are like the puddings of the nonstop action universe.

I have a bad feeling that the curved bullet concept (something which is likely used sparringly to great effect in the movie) will become INCREDIBLY overused through the duration of the game.

@Tesahli:
I thought that was the point. That even the most reserved powermad villain was really just an adolescent power fantasy come to life. Personally that was the only thing that made the comic worth anything. The villains won, but all they could figure to do with that power was to act like 12 year olds.

Man, i'm still laughing of the stupidity the curve bullet is. I mean, if I had saw this curve bullet thing on The Matrix, it would had been ok, because, it was a program, and a program can be hacked, even more by The One. But to see this thing done in somewhat a real world scenario, I just can't concive, since I saw the trailer I though it was stupid, funny, but stupid.
Man, this game is going to be a comedy!!!!

Since I have not seen the movie nor read the graphic novels I'll have to make a few assumptions here. But the idea of the game looks really neat, I'm assuming the slow motion will be somewhat like bullet time in the Matrix games/movies? I'm curious how they work the physics engine with curving bullets

@houser:
Interesting point. I could have saw it that way I think obviously had they ended it after the part where he's going on the rant in the graveyard about how adolescent it is, but when they go into the whole "Yeah I was totally joking" then especially go into the whole ending part talking about how much he'd made of his life and about the wars and blah blah blah. I don't know, maybe they're being more subtle and I'm more used to getting slapped with the point at the end.

I still don't get how anyone who read the comic could be happy with the movie (other than seeing Jolie shooting things again I guess?)
The game looks kind of fun so far, but it would be spectacular if they followed the idea of being villains instead of the cop out path the movie took.

yup, thats what i thought too, thats why i like wanted the comic,it was realistic. Wesley is a loser who as soon as he gets the power goes bezerk and gets revenge. I honest expect thats what most people in his situation would do.
But i honestly wish the game was based on how the villains take over the world, as detailed in the comic, some of those missions they speak about seem perfect to be made into games.
as it stands with how the movie ends, i really dont know how you can maka continuation sttory

Some facts about Wanted: The game:
-curving bullets is somewhat similar to throwing grenades in gears of war: you push a button, and see an adjustable curved path preview for the next shot.
-during the game u travel back and forth in time, switching between the main character and his father. the designers at GRIN Barcelona had to do that in order to keep the map number to a minimum.
-Warner Bros. didn't give a copy of the movie to GRIN, so they had to download it from a P2P network.
-Angelina Jolie didn't visit them, either :(
