2.40 Dojo - Yes, time to kick off another Dojo! As you'd be aware, Sony's new-fangled 2.40 firmware for the PS3 was up, then down, and now, two days on, is still down. With no word from Sony, other than that they're "working on it". Hope they can get it up soon, be nice to spend the long weekend with it.

@PipTheLip: They either need to move the clock, or the battery charge level down. They overlap when you hit the PS button. DOn't know how they missed that tiny detail.

I have it and it's working fine. The clock is the only feature I've benefited from thus far. Don't have SSHD.
I thought there might be a chance you could listen to music using in game xmb after pressing the PS button, but I guess that wasn't part of the deal this rollout.
Anyway, that minor feature would allow for some familiar tunes during abbreviated intermissions. I can understand giving the developer the discretion for in-game music for gameplay and mood, but who cares after I've pressed the PS button. Technical reason, I guess.

@dynendal: Yeah...there are a lot of douchebags on message boards, huh?
I installed 2.40 without error and have been enjoying the new features. It's a shame more games weren't trophy enabled, as I've played about as much Super Stardust HD as I can stomach. ("Shock and Awe" and "Late Boomer" are fucking impossible.)
Still, I can see why 360 owners were so enthused about Achievements...there is some fun to be had waving your e-penis around.
Having the time display is a really nice feature too...I'm glad it's finally been included.

I doubt fixing it will take too long. It wouldn't surprise me if they weren't already testing a fix.
But! I'll bet the biggest thing that will be occupying them will be how to fix all the bricked PS3s they've made without requiring people to re-format their hard drive or send their console in (or both). Either of which would be a PR disaster for Sony.

I'm surprised this even happened, to be honest. Firmware updates are fairly common, and hang-up disasters happen frequently-- not just to the PS3, but to the 360, and to loads of other consumer electronic devices. That failed installations can wreck your fucking day-- that's common knowledge, and most hardware manufacturers understand it very well. Well enough to plan around it, and have a contingency plan in place so a failed installation doesn't result in ruined hardware. But apparently for all their our new consoles are basically supercomputers talk, neither Sony nor Microsoft felt compelled to have a great solution in place for the rather common event of failed firmware installations. Boo!

It's probably a custom setting (theme, config etc) or something conflicting with the install... The actual firmware is fine.
I'd say do a backup and install from the net if your worried. It can't "brick" your system just mess up your HDD requiring a reformat.
In game messaging is so handy... cant wait for when cross game chat is implemented :)

It must suck to have to fix this, or most bugs and errors.
They obviously thought it was good to go when they released it, and then you find out it's making consoles freeze, lag, the XMB menu won't come up, etc. You thought you fixed all the problems before release, it must be really annoying and confusing to try to recreate and resolve the errors.
Have fun with that.

I have it installed and haven't had any issues. I've only played MGS4 on it. For those who can't wait, just remember:
The majority of the library does not have trophies yet.
Other than messaging, in game XMB is nearly functionless unless you wanted the extra step of having the PS tell you that you need to exit the game to change settings rather than just doing it.
It does kind of amazes me that it took Sony this long to release non working/partially functional features that should have been included at launch.

Don't worry about it too much. I DLed it right after it launched, and I can say it is an improvement, but not one that will likely tranform the experience to a new level of grandeur. The Trophy's are cool, but only in SSHD, and the in game XMB is essentially a practical upgrade, that is cool. Overall, don't worry if you don't have it yet.

There was some data corruption due to a VERY small amount of people getting cut off in the middle, or accidentally effecting in during install.

So far all the issues have been user error and preexisting hardware issues.
1. You can't flip the machine off while flashing.

After the update was pulled and hearing about all of the issues with the update, I decided to search for it on google and download it. It didn't seem to be extremely threatening, plus there was a fix for it just in case something went wrong. It installed just fine on my 60gb ps3, and I haven't encountered any other issues while playing. I bought Super Stardust HD, got a bunch of trophies, and I am overall very happy that I decided to take the "risk" in updating. I love the in-game xmb, which should have existed in the first place.
The trophy thing is annoying though. In Super Stardust HD, you can only unlock half of the Trophies with the "regular" game. To unlock the other trophies you have to get the "single player pack", which is an additional 5 bucks. Then later on I found out you have to get a "coop pack" to get another trophy, which is ANOTHER additional 5 bucks. This trophy system seems to be just a bait and switch to sucker you into buying add-on content. To make things worse, this isn't the only game that is doing it either. If you want your precious trophies, get ready to start buying them.

@n42: Dude, not all games are supported by trophies yet, Super Stardust HD is the only game that has them for now. The trophies you collected are the in-game trophies for Pain. Theyre not PSN ID Trophies
@Ed_209: I agree, dude. I realised I had to download the single player pack in order to obtain a few of the tropies, then i find I need the co-op pack (which isnt even out on the eu servers yet) for ONE trophy. Hopefully it'll just be for the DLC games. I'd hate to think youd have to download an update for uncharted or something to grab one of the trophies too. That'd suck.

@EnigmaNemesis: If i had to guess the cause of the brick i will guess for a hard drive database problem.
Each start the PS3 check it's internal database (A cache of all the games, saves, music, films and all the metadata displayed in the XMB) and rebuild it if corrupted with the message "The hard disk's database will be rebuilt" (You loose all of your folders and organization in this case).
Now, this database may have to contain all information about trophies so the update to 2.40 will update the file format.
What i guess is that if there a corruption of the database file (Or files i don't know) the firmware update just hang, totally unable to do anything.
This could explain that the bricks are rare (HDD problems doesn't happens so often) and that this firmware update is more affected than the previous ones (A new type of data is now stored in the database as trophies were added so the database need an upgrade)
Anyway I have seen on forums that some persons report that after bricking the PS3 and partially formatting the drive the PS3 sometimes see the old partition and is able to rebuild itself and get back some save games (It guess that it is the non-psnID-locked save games) the problem really seem to bet in the database used to store information for the XMB.
