Delays Continue For Burnout Paradise Xbox 360 'Cagney' Update
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 8:20 AM on July 25, 2008
Criterion is now "aiming", as it says, for an early August release for its long-awaited "Cagney" update to Burnout Paradise on Xbox 360. The developer had originally announced a July 10th release date, but now says August 4th is the "EARLIEST" (caps Criterion's) that it can be expected to be available.
The update rolled out onto PS3 on time, marking almost an entire month's delay for Xbox 360 users. "We're in the final stages of testing the revised version and will announce a concrete date as soon as we have one", wrote Criterion on its developer blog.
The update contains 70 challenges, new online game modes — Marked Man, Stunt Run and Road Rage — the Live Page and Calendar, new cars, liveries and what the developers describe as a "mountain" of smaller improvements.
Full explanation post-jump:
Here's a quick post on the Xbox 360 version of our forthcoming software update.
We're still not able to provide a concrete date on this awesome FREE update. We're in the final stages of testing the revised version and will announce a concrete date as soon as we have one.
We're currently aiming for 4th August. That's the EARLIEST we can expect it to be available.
Many apologies to those keenly awaiting this pack. As always, we're trying to get this to you as quickly as possible.
We hope you can hold on a little longer for our brand new online game modes (Marked Man, Stunt Run and Road Rage), the Live Page and Calendar, our new cars, liveries, 70 Challenges and a mountain of smaller improvements.
More news here soon.

Will this update add menus to the game? I bought it yesterday and will trade it in on Sunday I expect, I can't believe you can't restart events. The open world sucks, navigating at speed sucks, and driving to an event or location to change cars etc completely stinks up the joint. Can't believe they released it.

@WatershipDown: So a console with more units sold to customers gets more game sales, who would of thought that. Next you might realise that when the sun goes down it's night.

Is it really that serious, PS3 is still getting FF13 and X360 is still getting the update. Everyone wins... right?

@WatershipDown:
And all the subsequent returns and trade-ins from those 360 buyers that could give a rats ass about the game right now vs. the lot of happy PS3 owners...
Yep, they made the right choice. :) I'm happy.

Meh. Cagney isn't all that great.
I mean, it's okay, but unless you're all about the online experience, it doesn't add much of anything.

I'm sometimes still in awe that Criterion are part of EA - they're too nice with all this free stuff!
This pack I'm not worried about, but if the next packs are delayed for 360, I won't be a happy bunny.

Looks like there was a reason I didn't pick up Paradise yet. Now I can wait and then start playing it *with* the download pack immediately!
Not that I'm not going to wait until I can get it for $20 anyway, long after everyone else has stopped playing it online.

@Odd_Fact: Oh, btw, the last bit ... It's a joke. I know all about LBP and all that goodness that I secretly envy and hate the PS3 camp for but, as all things PS3 these days, I'll believe the release date when it's on store shelves.

To be fair though, this isn't a surprise. Before the game launched, the official website mentioned it's custom build for the PS3. The developers are obviously from the PS3 kool-aid camp and to keep costs down while maximizing profit, they built the game on it first, then ported to 360. That would also explain the delay. They've probably only got one team working on both patches. One at a time.
But hey, good news, at least this is one exclusive the PS3 has that's absolutely certain to launch before 2009 ... because it already has! ;)

I played the crap out of this on 360(Elite license), then picked up for PS3 since it was dirt cheap. Cagney is a cool update, especially the calendar and start page.

There's quite a bit of talk on the Criterion forums about some pretty serious glitches in Cagney on the PS3. Like if you're browsing the Easydrive menu and the host starts a race the game freezes. It's probably one of the reasons why it was rejected by MS cert. For that I'm glad it got delayed on the 360. Criterion doesn't favor one console over the other.

@toefer: Agreed. I remember downloading the update bright and early in the morning, starting it up and saying... "meh".
If you've already finished the game, custom soundtracks but no new roads doesn't do much for you.
@lucidmantra: Don't hold your breath... it didn't add much to write home about. I think it's more a framework update so you'll eventually have things to write home about.
....
And to some of the other guys here... Cagney isn't something to lord over anyone. Being a troll is bad enough without trying to be all pompous about an update that changes some menus and gives custom soundtracks to the system that didn't have them.
It's like teasing someone because your bag of M&Ms had 101 pieces and his only had 100...

Actually guys, Burnout Paradise sold very similar to both Xbox 360 and PS3, weird considering the 360 has a bigger console base.
PS3: 690k
360: 760k
Realistically I don't think Criteon is probably amazed as I am that it managed to sell so similarly on both platforms.

I can't understand why people keep complaining that Xbox is getting the short end of the stick with this. Obviously there is something really wrong that they aren't releasing the update yet. They released it to the PS3 and from what I understand, it was pretty buggy. I have no issue with waiting to make sure that when it is released, there are no problems. Either they delay it to fix problems or they release it with problems, people are still gonna cry like spoiled children.

@Quicksilver4648: I agree with you on the 360 getting the shaft on this one. It's understandable though because Mr. Alex Ward never has hesistated on expressing his preference to Playstation consoles. I know everyone has a preference regardless of whether or not they choose to disclose it, but at least I know where his priorties lay for his team when it comes to development...

It's sad really. From Day 1, Criterion established itself as a Playstation centric developer but it's becoming sad as it seems that they are faining the same issues the rest of the developers have had with the PS3 platform. It's either total neglect or they are being fanboys in the worst possible roll to be one in which would be as a developer. Not sure what this hold-up is about.

I'm a recent PS3 owner (with secret Xbox 360 fanboy ambitions)... I also own a Wii...
Okay, let's get this out of the way. I'm shocked.
Even John Carmack has come out and said it's easier to get good results out of the Xbox 360 than from the PS3.
Not to mention UE3 licensees...
I just sold my PS3 copy of Burnout Paradise (I was hoping for something more like Excite Truck, but prettier), promising kick-ass updates to the buyer...
I'm really glad that Critereon at least fulfilled my promisses... and shocked that Critereon is one of the first companies to "figure out" the PS3.
I also am unimpressed with Killzone 2... but if Criterion were in charge, maybe it would already be out, and I'd already be selling it on Ebay...
If only... right?! I can't sell oil, so I may as well sell videogames.
