Metal Gear Online Tournament Hits Comic-Con, Kojima Signs Stuff
Posted by Brian Crecente at 6:00 AM on July 25, 2008
Konami and Major League Gaming have teamed up to host a Metal Gear Online Tournament at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego. Prizes for the tournament include a PS3 bundle and game bundles as well as some shirts, gift cards and such.

@Cyanotic: I don't think it's terrible by any means, but I definitely don't think it's for everyone. If you're expecting to play Call of Gear 4 Online you probably won't enjoy it.

The worst things about MGO are the sloppy net code, roving clans who jump into pubs while your teammates are running in circles, and the perpetually broken reward shop. Oh, there's also this training mode where you can be 'mentored' by an experienced player. Of course, all those mouthbreathers are too busy calling everyone with under 4000 kills a 'n00b'.
Despite this, I still play.

Well I can already tell that tournament is going to suck. Mainly because it is a MGO tournament. The prizes are basically things that most of the participants are going to have. Especially since the only people that will enter it are MG fanatics.

Haha, seeing how well Konami's handled MGO so far I must say that I do not have high expectations for this...

Dude, Japan is basically on the other side of the planet. You know "the ocean and a couple more places" that you're talking about is the biggest body of water in the world? I mean, it takes 5 hours just to get to Hawaii from here.
I'm hoping you're joking, though.

Holy crap! I'm having him sign my MGS3: Subsistence LE that I've never opened. It's still sealed in plastic but I guess I'l tear open a bit of it so he can sign the cardboard. I've never played MGS4 and won't be there Saturday so I guess that would count me out of the tourney.
SWEET!

@MASOCHIST187:
MGO has some shortcomings; the menu system is a little underpowered, among other things. But the gameplay is pretty great.
It's been said before, I'll say it again: you shouldn't play it like an FPS. Yeah, you have that option, you can run around in ADS mode the whole time, but your movement speed will drop. This is realistic; you can't expect your shots to be accurate at all while running, and a lot of online FPSes ignore this.
MGO is much more rewarding when you play it like the stealth game that it is. Hide, sneak, use that cardboard box. Use the environment and look around corners. Be quiet and listen for footsteps. You know, Metal Gear style.
Back to the subject at hand: Tournaments? Very cool. I wish I were there. Heck, I'd get owned anyway, but it'd be fun to watch. But with PS3s for prizes? Kinda silly....

@sascha23: Although, if you're generally rocking at MGO, doesn't that mean you've had previous experience...playing on your own PS3? Heck, you can always keep the second PS3 in case your current one breaks down in 6 years.
Good point.

@holysocks: I don't think so, but I'm sure he's traveled back and forth a lot lately. Meaning that it's not that big a deal to travel from Japan to California since the only thing separating them is the ocean and a couple more places, lol.

I always find it strange that you win consoles in gaming contests. Most of the time, if you're good enough to win, you already own the console. It's nice ebay fodder though, I guess?

sometimes i wish i lived in america given the sheer amount of events and prizes to be won. Theres always a tick box in the end saying "i certify i am a u.s. resident etc etc" lol, we never get anything like that number here in the uk.
Plus you guys dont have tax too. Hopefully some MGO tourney crops up here in the EU, cuz im quite good at it and ill give it a shot (lol i think too highly of myself)

Yeah, it's a nice gesture, but a nicer gesture would be not forcing the tournament participants to play Metal Gear Online. Does the first-place finisher get a version of MGO with less busted net code?

But I already have Metal Gear Solid 4...that's how I'm playing MGO. So if I win the tournament, I get another LE MGS4 to put with the MGS4 I already have, in order to learn to play MGO...

well some of you have answered my question already but i could use a few more points of view. I have MGS4, but i haven't played MGO yet. I did try the beta, but i hated it. However, now that i am more used to the controls, i wonder if it could be any good? Any opinions? And yes i know i can just try it myself, it's just that my gaming time is very limited. thanks.

@Cyanotic:
I don't think MGO is terrible, but then again I rarely do online multiplayer, excluding co-op.
I think it was something that needed to be there to accomodate Konami and the value proposition of the software.
Although the single player is well worth every penny.

I'm mediocre at MGO, but if someone who is in the area would like to do me a favor then ask Kojima this question. Is the password to unlock the 1911 Handgun going to be released this century, or should we all continue to hold our breaths?

Dammit! I love how I have no hope for me going to these kinds of events just because of everything else...
Like some of you said, they could've come up with better prizes (the money prize is fine though), Unless the winner will give them away to someone else to spread the fandom, but that's silly thinking...

@NegativeGhostrider: Yeah, that's why the lol's there. But I know what you're saying. I've never really flown anywhere overseas other than Austria. And flying from Nashville,TN, or just the U.S. in general, is definitely a LONG-@$$ flight (in the 18+hour sense) LOL. The (failed) example I was using was from what I've heard from friends in the Navy and Marines. Like if you want to travel to Japan, you have to be stationed in California. If there's any truth to this, don't hesitate to elaborate (Holy crap, I just rhymed. I AM tired...)
